The really nasty one isn't just the boss that you're supposed to lose to/can't beat, is the boss that you obviously can't beat so you assume you're supposed to lose to him so you do, but then it turns out that you had to survive fighting them up to a certain point so you can die to a cutscene or super move for the game to progress properly.
@Relicanth8 жыл бұрын
I've got two. 1) Bosses who require you to spend half the battle chasing them, as being in front of you to throw down is a chump way out - no, you have to run through multiple rooms or across rooftops just to reach them and then smack at them. 2) Bosses who abandon all your moves, upgrades, and fighting mechanics and say "Screw it, we're doing this entire battle in vehicles!", rendering all the training, powering up, and skill-honing you've done utterly worthless.

"only being briefly vulnerable" all sonic bosses since 2006 run and avoid attacks for 10 minutes now you get your 10 second chance. oh, you didn't realize, you missed it. run and avoid attacks for another 10 minutes. ok now is your chance. go ahead. oh, you didn't hit him, you only removed his protection. you realize you actually have to hit him twice knowing this and having to avoid dangers for next 10 minutes bothers you. you start being hit because you are upset. now is your chance. jump, crush the shield and GODDAMMIT WTF HAPPENED ?! you understand when you destroy his shield, you have to dodge a last ditch attack before hitting his weak spot. his attack is really easy to dodge but you didn't know. understanding how easy it was frustrates you even more. you start being hit again because you are angry for the next 10 minutes to come. you have 0 rings, you become angrier anger makes you forget where are the rings scattered on your path. you have to avoid dangers and get rings at the same time. you manage to collect 5 rings. you get hit right after that and lose them. you see 5 rings coming you get hit trying to get them you have 0 rings. anger makes you make mistakes. you die. you start again you manage to hit him you understand it takes 6 hit to defeat. after 1 entire hour perfect battle without missing once and being it, you are about to give the last shot. BSOD you unplug your console, put it behind the wheel of your car and you reverse gear. and forward and reverse and forward until you are sure the console is crushed.

Boss battles are one of my least favorite game design conventions. I rarely find them fun for many of the reasons stated here. Anyway, you forget to mention those bosses who are super hard to defeat but then have a change of heart and join your team, and you think, "All right! This guy is going to kick some serious ass!" only to find out that he no longer has all those super awesome powers that he used when fighting you. And, oh yeah, he has a normal health bar making him just as vulnerable as the rest of your party.

Agh, that last one. I can't remember what game it was now but I remember a boss that, not only were you supposed to lose to, it didn't have any way of completely ending you in one hit and it wasn't invincible. Literally hours of attacking this boss to get its bar all the way down to where its nearly gone and I couldn't finish that last little bit. I end up pausing and looking it up only to find out I was supposed to let it kill me. Devs: Just don't make fail state bosses, make it a cut-scene or something. Edit: By 'that last one' I mean that last point not Dragon's Dogma. I can't remember what game *I PLAYED* not 'I can't remember what game they are playing.'

Seth Cox That's what dissapointed me about the Corypheus boss fight in Inquisition. Let's face it, in the quest I mentioned he pretty much screwed the Inquisitor over, forcing the whole Inquisition to relocate all together, and Bioware doesn't even give him a challenging boss fight. You spend more time chasing him down and fighting his minions and his Red Lyrium Dragon then you do actually fighting him.

The bit on bosses having minions reminded me of the Big Daddy battles in BioShock, where you'd spend an inordinate amount of time clearing an area, making sure your weapons were all loaded with the right type of ammo, setting up tripwires and proximity mines, steeling yourself for what you know is going to be an arduous fight, and finally firing that first shot into the Big Daddy's face . . . only to have a bunch of splicers show up out of nowhere and completely destroy your well-laid plans.

The multiple stages thing can be a great thing about boss fights if they're done properly. It creates a sense of rising tension and escalation that boss fights should all be about. Like half the boss fights in any Platinum game. And where did you get that Dragon's Dogma footage? Something's wrong with the textures on that dragon. Or is that what it looks like when you don't install the "HD" texture pack in the Dark Arisen version?
@_imago9 жыл бұрын
Scrustle I think the problem is that when you fight the boss for the first time, you don't know that he/she has multiple health bars. I like multiple stages too where fight mechanics change but they should trigger with something like 50% of boss' health, not when you think you killed him/her.
@lorathian9 жыл бұрын
Scrustle Agreed. The final boss to Kingdom Hearts 2 was probably one of my favorites simply because of just how they deescalated it (while also still escalating it because although the forms got less badass-looking, the boss himself got more difficult.)

Though a BAD example would be something like the Best Friend from Persona Q, who will absolutely crush you into powder most of the fight, then it turns out it has endure when you get ready to kill it, but not just any endure, no. I have some for you: 1. Move spam: when the boss does that one move where you can't hurt it, because it does way to much damage or it's unreachable by any means. 2. Before it's death it launches one ranged attack and kills you both. Chances are you have to start over. 3. Time limit: it's just artifical difficulty. Cheap as hell... 4. When the boss causes environmental hazards that causes way more cheap deaths than the boss' attack itself. And thanks to that, your tactics are limited.

The "needing to lose" can be done well. Look at The Sorrow from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. The amount of ghosts in the river is directly proportionate to the amount of people you've killed. You have to wade through that river, being beaten by the souls of those you shot down. Endlessly walking down a stream obscured with fog with no end in sight. Only the ghosts of your victims, and The Sorrow. Unless you're cheap and use the fake death pill to end it instantly. I prefer to take the walk because it makes you realize how many people you killed. you lose track after around ten and figure you've probs killed 50 max, but they come by the hundreds, and you have to let it sink in how many people you ACTUALLY killed.

Can I direct you all to turn your attention to Death from Dragons Dogma, Bitter Black Isle. Especially when he shows up around other, extremely dangerous enemies. Death waves his lantern and puts half your party to sleep. You now have 5 seconds to wake up those sleeping party members before he insta-kills them (and yourself if you're caught by it) with his scythe... Which generally has a range of "the size of the room you're in". And that's while avoiding being killed by the other enemies that are just chilling. Some aren't too bad, but the Corrupted Pawn's can be a pain, since they seem to LOVE spamming spells that knock-back, slow, blind, darken or otherwise cripple you in some way.

At the end of Halo 2, there is a boss fight in which you must battle a boss who not only has minions, but is also invincible until one of the Marines shoots him with a Beam Rifle. The boss can also kill you in 1 hit (at least on higher difficulties), and effortlessly vanquishes all your NPCs helpers (who don't comprehend the boss's invincibility and have no sense of self-preservation). Halo 2 is still a great game though.

Okay, just to make one thing clear. Ornstein and Smough can definitely be hard if you dont know how the fight goes. More than anything, its a matter of learning their attack patterns, and in my opinion, Ornstein is the easier of the two to kill, both in regular AND Super form. Yeah, Smough is slow but he hits quite hard. Speaking of which, to counter the fact that you have to fight both at once? Only damage the one you're looking to kill first.

Rather similar to a couple of your entries are when you're required to dodge/block a series of attacks before you have the opportunity to retaliate. @Slimurgical9 жыл бұрын
+AGM Flatline And then there's people like me who play it when looking for ways to hide poor game design in video games, imo, Dark Souls is notorious for it, hiding behind the "the gameplay works canonically" crap they have with the whole "Death is part of the whole story" by making the game cheap on purpose, making it predictable to pessimists, though it's just cheap, not difficult. Namely for the second one, not because they've run out of ideas, but because WAY too many enemies can be dealt with similarily... and some enemies have instant damage moves, like the Spider Drone Zombies, even if they normally do huge damage.
@agmflatline8089 жыл бұрын
Wanna say how Dark Souls has poor game design? Because, to my knowledge, the gameplay is like any other 3rd person fantasy game with the damage ramped up. Sure, sometimes it can be janky, but after you learn how to look past the shit and use some of it against the games mechanics themselves. Dont get me wrong, they kinda dropped the ball with DS2, but they didnt run out of ideas. Its like saying the ran out of ideas with Bloodborne, which they didnt. To be real, I just think you didnt get far enough into it to accept its difficulty or learn to use bullshit, so you got buttmad, died a whole bunch of times, then found reasons to say the gameplay or mechanics or whatever sucked.

I like that game too, but it also has the "supposed to die to the boss without knowing It" problem the first time you fight sam. I was kicking his ass but it turns out you had to fucking die. For story reasons.

Mountain Dank I guess you're still meant to be sloppy at the start so, Well done for putting up a good fight on the train! =)

there was this one fight in sinjid (a flash game) where the boss walks away, heals himself awhile spawning zombies AND this is the toughest game since dark souls

Even worse is when you're supposed to die to a boss for story reasons... but it still gives you a game over if you die before you're 'meant' to.
