Thanks for the help! After being paralyzed for 3 weeks there’s no way I was going to be as useful to the farmer who - by contract - has to have specific numbers of deer killed in order to lease. There’s nothing more satisfying than to help hungry Hoosiers and I appreciate a farmer who feels the same way. You were a great help and I know the families that already have the deer are happy. Edit - the paralysis was from corticosteroid use for a bad crohns flare, called steroid induced myopathy.

I live in Southern Indiana and these farmer tags kill are deer numbers. Sucks because we lose not only 1 doe but more then likely her fawn as well.

Agree - that’s the hard part - we do our best to take single does, but the fawns we did see were weaned.

@JimRyser glad to hear. Ik there are areas that still have good deer populations. But in my area Washington County numbers are down. Public land is what I hunt and some of them deer are far and few compared to 5 years ago..... im not downing you or catman at all tho

Deer cause the most crop damage during the summer, not during deer season. Farmers don’t care about deer season.

In Indiana there are limited tags per county during season. 2 only in the county we were in. Depredation is a completely different thing than hunting; the purposes are night and day.

This would be great for new hunters with an expeienced helper to guide them thru the whole process. The most daunting part of hunting for a new hunter is the field dressing part. Having to do it on multiple deer would teach them real quick how to do it properly

I hate the crop damage programs it doesnt help the crops only hurts the hunters in the area and throws off the deer number counts for states

I disagree. I hunt public near a few big farms. There were 400 deer killed with depredation tags. Still had a great season on public. They can get very out of control.

This is super cool and the fact you donate the meat is awesome! I just shot two does yesterday on a farm in central Michigan. Local farmer with crop damage. I’ll keep the meat and have the Mrs pressure can it. Nice video

Not if they a) lease year round and kill what the farmer asks them to do. To the farmer a deer is money out of their pockets. Or b) that should be discussed prior to ever signing.

For some reason I thought you used Hornady American Whitetail but those Federal Fusions are obviously working well for you! I’ve only tried seven different factory ammo’s so far in my Ruger American 308 Predator. Most group good enough for the woods but Hornady American Whitetail 165g and Sellier & Bellot 180g SP both shoot 1” groups. Federal Fusion 180g shot ok but I’ll have to try it in the lighter offerings. Great shooting!

That was a fun one to watch, I enjoyed that. I worked on a dairy farm for a couple of years that was open to the public. The farmer closed it down bc of disrespecting his land. So, the land was open to permission only, so the farm could regulate the responsible and ethical hunters. Every year I donate multiple deer to the local Christian Food bank bc people just don’t have the opportunity to enjoy venison. A single mature doe will provide around 175-200 meals. Donating game is a great thing. Stay safe.

Agreed. I personally wouldn't do a depredation hunt when there are offspring dependent upon them. I get it and understand it but the cruelty imposed on the offspring falls outside of my morals. Now two weeks before archery season....game on.

I'd like to have some crop damage permits this year. I planted 4 rows of sweet corn in the garden and the deer just flat tore them up. Across the road, there's more than 100 acres of field corn growing. But NOOO! The rascals had to have my sweet corn. Oh well. I know what to NOT plant next year.

Man I had 3 rows in my yard garden and only picked a dozen ears out of probably 150. They'd sneak in the yard while the dogs were asleep and eat the fresh silk off the ear. I need better guard dogs lol

Appreciate the point of view. Many hunters feel the same way and don’t do it. As a farmer, however, it’s $$. Some farmers I know shoot ‘em and leave em lay. These deer are feeding local brothers and sisters.

It’s a hard thing and not everyone can do it. Fawns are weaned at 6-8 weeks but will suckle for longer.

A good time there. I am doing a urban Archery hunt this yr. But with my new xbow. Shoulder surgery cant hold a bow back. Around golf course and air field . In a small town. Starts September 1st thru February 28th. Unlimited tags either sex. U can keep them. Or donate as many as you want. To hunters feeding the hungry. I got 10 tags to start out with. Bought 2 dz bolts. And 9 tooth of arrow 100gr broadheads . And 12 rage Hypodermic 100gr broadheads to try. Just waiting now. Hope to kill a buck in velvet.
