I’m in love with the medium format look - on film or digital - and am seriously close to selling all my DSLR gear to fund a digital back for my RZ67 and/or Mamiya 645 AFD. Your videos are extremely informative and helpful!

Dj Toman DO IT!! I will not say you won’t regret it because I didn’t know if I should regret it for many months. Many jobs I could have taken (events or weddings and stuff to get some coins) I had to reject so I was unsure I did the right thing. But in fact that helped me to push over those jobs and at the end of the day I forced myself to focus on what I really wanted to shoot. Now I can say I would do it again. But it was hard to get used to the new system. But if you want a humble advice, just do it! If you totally hate it, put the digital back up for sale and get some of your old gear back. But after this many years I have not even once think in even getting a DSLR as a second camera at all.
@pablovi776 жыл бұрын
I don’t recommend it. Better get a Pentax 645D or better a Z. You can find a Pentax 645D for less than any digital back. And the lenses are not that expensive. Or you can get a Pentax 645Z for about $4,000 USD. The only difference is the sensor, CCD vs CMOS, if you shoot only daylight or studio, the Pentax 645D will suffice, but if you need to use higher ISO’s than 400, you’ll need the Z. The 645Z sensor is superb! And you’ll have autofocus and live view.
@djtoman68756 жыл бұрын
Pablo Villegas Thanks for your input. I love the look of CCD sensors and would never shoot higher than 400 ISO for the type of work I would be doing. But in the end I decided to get a Nikon D850 for digital work and continue using my Mamayas (645 Pro TL, RZ67, and 645 AFD) for film. Maybe some day in the future I'll think seriously about medium format digital and will revisit these considerations.

Dj Toman the Nikon will give you bigger files for sure. I have tried one time, I had the D700 and it was my next logical option. So I borrowed one. Sadly I had used a digital back already and when opening the files for retouching no matter what I do I couldn’t get that digital back quality, even with that much Mpx at the end of the day it was the sensor type and the capture size. But sometimes I guess is better to play it safe. My first digital back sales for less than 2k (or around there) 22 Mpx and totally worth it for the quality. It was the Leaf Aptus 22.

Thank you for the useful contents. I've got a RZ67 II Pro with a PhaseOne 30+ digital back for M645 mount. I picked up an adapter from LensMod for $200 and everything's been working smoothly except for two-shot mode. I've tried everything I can think of for single shot mode, but I can't figure it out. Is there any way to set the P30+ for single shot?"

I got a question on my channel regarding using a ZD-back on a RB/RZ-67 still was fishable and if that would be “worse quality” today then a Nikon D850 or Sony A7r. I thought that it wasn’t just Mp-count but also sensor aria that made a camera good. What’s your take on it?

Julio, quick question: I see you're using the Mamiya adaptor on the RZ67PROii. The adaptor's manufacturer claims that it only works with the "D" version of the RZ body. Am I missing something?
@RyuuzakiJulio7 жыл бұрын
In part yes and in part no. The adapter I am using it is the one designed for the Pro IID, model # HX-701, to say that it ONLY works on the D, hmm, this adapter comes with connections to the body to communicate with the back. The Pro II does not have those connections so it won't work "as intended". Let me put it simpler. There is 2 models of the Mamiya adapters: HX-705 (Old version without connectors for the digital back around 500 dlls if you can find one) and HX-701 (The one I have, made for the Pro IID, 900 dlls) Both can be mounted on either camera body, and both can use M mounts, both can rotate with the RM lever function and both are able to get you photos no matter if its Pro II or Pro IID. But only the HX-701 ON a ProIID will be able to "communicate" the body to the camera. I say "communicate" because you don't really get aperture info or lens mm info, you only get the signal to start and end the exposure. When not using this combo (HX-701 and Pro IID) you will need one pc-sync adapter, some digital backs use a generic one, and some digital backs use a special one, but it will just connect to the PC-SYNC port of the lens. Why did I got the HX-701? To be honest, because I didn't knew it had the other option. I was never planning to get a Pro IID just to save me 1 cable, and the only info I could find was pointing to this adapter. I guess is fine, but is 400 extra dlls for a feature (to save me a cable and the latency mode on the digital back) that I don't require. Sorry for the long answer, hope it made things a little more clear for you. If you have any other question let me know.

Justin Sisson Justin Sisson awesome comment and great question. With any MF digital back you can't go wrong at all. As you saw here I got really great shoots with every digital back I've used. Aptus, P series, IQ. All of them do great shoots. If anything I would suggest would be don't get crazy high mpx, it will only make flaws more difficult to retouch, a good 22 mpx to 33 mpx is just about right. Also big sensor is nice. But for the speed I can totally say the IQ is glorious. But if it's your first back do like I did and start with the cheap one and slowly sell and upgrade.

So my question is, are there many digital backs for sale in japan? And what options do i have? The mamiya 645 pro tl is an electronic driven camera, so no leaf shutter.
@RyuuzakiJulio7 жыл бұрын
Wilson Law digital backs are made for a few camera mounts same digital back (let’s say P40+) can come with a different mount H, V, M, C mounts are the most common (at least all I know) The M mount is specially designed for Mamiya and Phase One 645 cameras. Yes there is places you can find digital backs in Japan, either from the official Phase One dealer or used in several stores. Your goal is to find an M type mount digital back. Hope it helps.
@wilson_law7 жыл бұрын
Julio Ryuuzaki thanks for the reply. But would i require an adapter for an m mount digital back? Or an adaptor is only used if i want to mount a hasselblad v mount on my m mount? Does the camera only need to connect to the back via a pc cord to tell it to start recording then I simply take the picture?
@RyuuzakiJulio7 жыл бұрын
Wilson Law M mounts are designed to be connected directly to the Mamiya and Phase One without adapters. The adapters are for large format and other bigger cameras, you can’t adapt a V mount on a 645 Mamiya, but you can adapt any mount with a large format or the RZ67. The backs have several modes to shoot, if your camera is pretty old and has no connectors for the back to work on, then the back would need a sync cable connected to the lens X-Sync or PC-Sync plug

Did you have to do anything to get the Pro II D back to work with the Non-D version. Did you consider upgrading to the IID body for the full functionality, metadata and 1 shot mode?
@RyuuzakiJulio7 жыл бұрын
bjmarchives the back is not a Pro II D they are defined by the mounts, some fit on old hasselblads V mount, some fit on new hsselblads H mount, some fit on contax cameras C mount and some fit on some 645 mamiya and phase One cameras, this are M mounts. The only thing you need is an adapter, the adapter I use on my RZ67 Pro II is made for the Pro II D, and the only benefit is that I don’t need the sync cable connected to the lens, but you don’t get any metadata at all even from the Pro II D camera. So I won’t be upgrading to the D camera.

I have a D810, but it's more than just image quality that I prefer medium format.. it's the fact I can shoot tight head shoulder shots with 180mm from 4ft away. The medium format look has a lot of perspective differences. If a full frame camera used the same lens, they would have to step back further for the same field of view, but then perspective changes. Think dolly zoom for video, that's an example of same subject size with different mm. I don't ever have to use lower than 80mm for 90% of my work, even full body I can shoot with 80-100mm
@alexmarchesini967 жыл бұрын

@RyuuzakiJulio5 жыл бұрын
Well, that back is a CCD 16Mpx sensor. Which in quality terms looks better than a Full frame 12mpx 35mm camera. I would argue that better even than any CMOS sensor can give you. But, the back doesn't have a display or menu on it, it also needs a strong firewire connection to work since it also doesn't have a memory card slot. So you will have to keep it connected to a machine with Firewire capabilities. Now, firewire on the newer computers is not as reliable as it was before many times requiring you to use a powered Firewire hub. The back cannot be triggered by software so you will still need to trigger your camera manually to get the photo sent to the computer. Is it usable? yeah if its on good condition, Im not really a fan of square format sensor since any rectangular print or post will require you to cut out some of that 16mpx you got. AND ISO range is only 50-100. Not to mention that you need to find an adapter for your RZ which I might be wrong but it might just be a V mount requiring you to get a type of adapter that does not rotate (which it doesn't really matter since the back has a square format sensor, but it will matter if one day you want to update to a better back). I guess the question is if I recommend getting one. My honest answer is, if you already have a digital back and you found an H20 for really cheap and you don't mind to have it just for fun then get it. If you want to actually use it, you need to be on a studio or carry your computer setup and maybe a power source with you so it will limit your shooting options a lot. If its your first digital back I would say to keep an eye open for an Leaf Aptus 22 (20 mpx) as your minimum option. Prices have dropped a lot so you can find it for less than 2k, but they come and go so you need to setup an alert on eBay or something and wait for few weeks or months before you see one popup. I wanted to make the reply clear enough, apologies for not being able to make the answer more short. Hope it helped.

I switched to digital cameras a long time ago. There are some digital cameras that do not have digital backs that take relatively good photos.

It’s very relative to talk about a good photo. “Art” aside, the capture quality really depends on the capturing surface and developing process. The purpose is to capture a luminous refraction into a permanent medium like film. So quality of lens I would consider much less important than the actual film and developing process used, old chemicals, wrong timings or temperatures could and will diminish the capture surface’s perceived at the time of the exposure.

What's the difference between Pro and Pro II ?
@RyuuzakiJulio6 жыл бұрын
I talked about it on another video, but quick answer, the Pro II has Half Steps Speed settings and Fine Focusing Knob. Pretty much that's it, but makes it totally worth it, specially if you think to have a digital back someday in the future.

Oh, the adapter you mentioned on the video is not cheap ! Almost $1500 on b&h without a cord !

B&H has always super expensive stuff. I have never bought from them. I got my adapter from www.captureintegration.com when I got my first used digital back from them too.

Coming here in 2024 as I am considering selling my Nikon D800 kit and getting a RZ67 Pro IID II D, so I was looking at Digital Backs for them. Everything was going great, and I had pretty much settled on getting the camera plus an IQ140 back, but THEN went to find an adaptor plate....(a HX701) and average price is €2000. Absolute INSANITY. Totally batshit. Two fuggen grand for an adaptor. Urgh. So yeah, that's the end of my plans. Full frame it remains for me. Thanks universe and money grabbing leeches.

I was a child of the Sinclair 128k - still an avid gamer - fan of your straight forward review experience - just not the sound effects ;)

simon gentry wow real veteran gamer. I did thought it was a bit overboard with the sfx, but also thought it would be too boring just having me talking for 20 mins, maybe a more calm background loop would be better? Or just voice is better to you?

Rytis K. Nice! The 22 Mpx model, base ISO 50 with the 4:3 format. Lovely!

Julio Ryuuzaki Yes indeed, this sensor amazing, i know its old,but still ,it produces quality that todays potato cameras ,like sony, dont come even close, there is no way to compare
@RyuuzakiJulio7 жыл бұрын
Rytis K. Yeah, the power of the CCD sensors. I completely agree. Actually it doesn't even compare to the 50 mpx medium format digital back just because it uses a CMOS sensor. CCD is still way more clean.
