Splendid work. I did saw one in Thun last year, togheter with a Jagdpanther. The metal work in general, the wielding, the material quality and thickness, the armor structure's joints and how those were precisely made and fit properly togheter, allowing the tank to be self supportive, granting it great sturdiness even in case of wieldings failures. Awesome.

It's interesting comparing the Panther's driving controls to the Koenigstiger from 2018 in the same environment. I noticed the following things when comparing the two vehicles: - The twin-lever controls of the Panther seem to be much more awkward and less precise to use than the steering wheel of the Koenigstiger. - Despite having roughly the same engine and weighing significantly less, the Panther seemed to have more trouble neutral steering and undertaking sharp turns and uphills. Is this particular Maybach engine more worn out than Saumur's Koenigstiger? I assume that is must have less than the original 690hp due to wear. - The driver appeared to have a much more challenging time driving the Panther using only the vision port than the Koenigstiger's driver did with their head out of the hatch. This was evident by the Panther relying on a walking guide the whole time, whereas the Koenigstiger was able to drive without a walking guide. Was the guide man an extra safety requirement for this year? Is it possible for the driver to control the Panther with their head out of the hatch for better vision, or are the seat and controls too far forwards? Overall , despite the Panther being a smaller and lighter vehicle with roughly the same engine, it seemed to be more challenging to drive in tight spaces. Is this true from the crew's experience? Great videos!
@kainhall4 жыл бұрын
i dont think they used neutral steer...... all i see is one track locked up, and the other moving N steer would be both tracks moving.... in opposite directions maybe a lot of the stuff ya hear about transmission issues were caused by the N steer (id imagine it places a lot more load on the trans) i also remember watching a video about how to drive a panther IIRC.... getting it into N steer isnt as simple as pushing a button or moving a leaver IIRC.... ya have to have like 4 or 5 things all set, in order to N steer
@TPath34 жыл бұрын
Maybe that Saumur Panther is not so healthy, the one of the Münster Museum drives much smoother, atleast the Panther also had Pre-Selection gearing, but then still there are situations where you would like to have three hands. The Panther was certainly not designed for closed terrain but instead the wide opern steppes - as most tanks are.
@CoreMaster1114 жыл бұрын
Panther has much more simplistic and crude transmission. Transmission and steering unit on the Tiger B is far more complex and far far more expensive but also far better in terms of performance. Germans even did testing with Panthers transmission in Tiger B to see if it was a viable option but they quickly found out that performance was significantly worse and idea got dropped. Neutral steering is when both tracks are powered and move in opposite directions. Often when doing a simple brake turn, one tracks stays in place while the other moves, you can see the other track moving slightly backwards but that is more due to friction between the track and ground forcing the track to move. Also Tiger B is capable of neutral steering but only on hard flat surface. On softer ground friction is too immense and stalls one of the tracks. Panther in the other hand can't do it at all as far as I have seen despite some claims that it was capable of neutral steering. Maybach engine originally made 690PS at 3000rpm but because of a critical design flaw it got limited to 2500rpm to prevent them from grenading, which reduces power down to 550-600PS. Not to mention that when engine gets worn, it loses even more power. And carburetors are real pain in the ass to keep them running close to 100% perfect. So that alone could easily take another 50-100PS off. You can even hear in the video how the carburetors on panther are not tuned well. Again, carburetors are real pain in the ass. When driving these tanks you have to rev the engine to max rpm when you start turning. Failing to do so is going to bog down the engine. Ofcourse rpm getting limited hurts a lot but also we can't forget how rare these engines are so you really don't want to destroy them by revving them to max all the time. This is Panther Ausf.A which does not let the driver to stick his head out. On the Later Ausf.G, driver can raise the seat high enough to see out. Search for WTD Panther to see how Panther is supposed to be driven and what it is capable of doing.

Especially vehicles like the French char B1. The commander was responsible for observing *and* handling the gun. After conducting fire, he had to look again up the turret. Now imagine all the stress doing that on the battlefield, literally trapped inside a metal coffin. Super slow and almost blind. One received 130 or more impacts and still made it back in one piece, if I recall correctly. But the crew would have been truly shaken.

@Phantom_Aspekt3 жыл бұрын
@@tino8296 I know the story you're referring to, the famous Tiger number 231 on the eastern front that was riddled with 252 craters from Soviet AT fire, a pretty epic story. The one Nick is referring to is Eure 337 during the German invasion of France which supposedly drove into a German ambush alone and survived 140 hits from 13 Panzers (mainly Panzer III) and took them out then rolled back home. I don't believe it one bit however, I think it's a made up story to boost French morale at the time due to their home effectively being captured by German forces. If you look up pictures of Eure 337 where it's scuttled there is absolutely no markings on it whatsoever that even suggest it ever being hit by German tanks over 100 times. The story suggests that there was flaking and craters on the armor which are simply nonexistent in photographs, what rubs this in even more is when you look up Tiger 231 you see craters all over it and when you realize majority of the hits were from AT rifles which still left a mark compared to a German tank gun leaving no marks on Eure 337 stuff doesn't add up 🤷♂️

Ein schön restauriertes Exemplar. Neben der Tiger-Reihe mein zweites Objekt der Begierde. Schade das ich den Lkw nicht gefahren habe. Leichter wäre ich nicht an einen Panther gekommen 😬.

Deadly Tank for it's Time, it's my alltime favourite, and I would pick it over anything else from that Time.
