My ex is suffering from dementia at 73. My daughter and her special needs son live with me, just the three of us, and every time I forget to turn something off, or can't find my keys, or have to search a little to remember a name or an infrequently used word, I can see that look on her face that seems to ssy, "not you too." I am so tempted when she forgets to turn something off or can't find something to roll my eyes and say, "uhoh." No, I seriously do not worry about me having dementia, but I will be 75 this year and have normal moments of inattention, maybe daydreaming, maybe preferring my own company. I would like to ask everyone making tbese invaluable videos helping family members to recognize warning signs that they need to remember these can be signs of normal aging, unless they become extreme. Tracking your older parent's every mistake and judging them constantly is not only annoying to them. It is demoralizing and ultimately harmful to their confidence, self esteem, and self worth.

I had to add that you do a remarkable job of explaining all the things caregivers need to know but have a very hard time finding out. Thank you for investing your time and energy in helping those of us seeking information and assistance. It can be very lonely out here.

Thank you , my husband is 75 and was diagnosed with dementia a year ago , and yes it was his driving that caught my attention from as three years ago , of course now he is not allowed to drive since been diagnosed, every day is quite a challenge and I am noticing on a daily basis ,new memory problems are arising from very simple things that he has to do is becoming a challenge for him and he gets so frustrated and quite angry at times especially when I am trying to help him , Thank you so much for the valuable info 🙏🏻💙

Another warning sign would be they are unable to manage their medical prescriptions accurately.

yeah. especially if you have like 15 of them like me! Fortunately some of those are OTC like iron, aspirin, folic acid, etc. it takes me a good 20 minutes to fill my 7 day pill box. but if I start having difficulty remembering and especially if a doc changes or adds or subtracts CAN you keep those changes "in your head"? its not so much whether or whether not but its CHANGES that one looks for. for example 5 years ago I had no problems managing meds but now I'm beginning to having to reference my med list whereby prior that was not necessary it then becomes a concern.

I am going through this right now with my husband. I've taken over his daily meds too. He actually asked me to take charge of all paying bills, etc. which really surprised me! He admitted it was too hard for him to concentrate. He is 83, we've been married for 45 years and I know this is the beginning of Dementia unfortunately.

@@leecowell8165 There is help at some Pharmacy's that will do that for you. At least the prescriptions. For the supplements, is there a family member or friend that would help you with that? I understand your issue.😇

@@lauriemasters5596 This comment brings back memories of things that happen over time. Mailing deposit slips instead of checks thinking it was a check. Talking to scammers on the telephone. Misplacing items never to be found again. It’s a long sad road.

I’ve been like this since I was 5, everyone else in the family just drinks, commits suicide or suffers from schizophrenia, I refer to myself as an antisocial space cadet, but I managed to move to another country where I don’t know the language, get a job and am learning the lingo slowly at the age of 60. It’s only dementia if you haven’t been like this your whole life .

That kind of trivialisation is unhelpful and can even be harmful. Please take the time to work out what actual dementia is like.

Yes, it’s a change in the usual behaviours that count. I’ve always had a bad memory. I was scared when I forgot what I just did more than a few times. Remember thyroid disease can mimic mental illness. Turns out I had hypothyroid. Also stress with its lack of sleep can do a number on your thinking.
@oakfat5178

@@Dustandfuzz My ex developed hypothyroidism. The mood swings are a clear indicator of needing to adjust the level of supplementary meds. We both had to learn the changes in mood weren't "the real her" with attitude problems, but a biological consequence.

My Mother still drove a 4-speed stick when she was 85. She could still drive well and actually renewed her license @ 98, but since we eventually went everywhere together, I usually drove.

Forgetfullness isn't a feature of all types of dementia. A patient could have fairly intact memory but poor organisational effectiveness from executive function impairment, for example, or begin with reduced control over how they speak and behave toward others.

the thing to look for though is CHANGE. for example I've ALWAYS been absent-minded (much more so than most people). However IF this becomes increasingly habitual then THAT becomes the time to be concerned. For example today I left my keys in the ignition of my truck (at my residence). Something I have NEVER done previously. well it better NOT happen again, see? why? because I cannot recall the previous time because there wasn't any! That was one of the classics that my spouse began with (she passed a few years ago from vascular dementia). She began locking her keys inside her vehicle when she went grocery shopping. I told her BEFORE you leave your vehicle place your keys IN YOUR PURSE. She did not "get the message". I finally started driving her there & shopped with her because she was purchasing dumb things at random. yep the beginning of the end, right there.

My psychiatrist looked me straight in my eyes and said if you have Alzheimer’s I will not know it. Someone else will be asking the doctors opinion. A little scary but I also feel relieved that if my normal activities are going wrong someone in my family can get me some help.
