How do you know? Can you just explain me quickly about chords and mode please?
@ciousli
@ciousli 5 жыл бұрын
@@ddkay6478 I know from having some years of jazz piano practice under my belt. There are videos on youtube that explain it much better than I can. The youtube channel NewJazz has the very best videos about that stuff (especially about modes). If you just want to understand some music theory you can go watch videos from the WalkThatBass channel. Also, an actual piano teacher is the most effective (and fastest) way to get over the beginning hurdles. Try to get 3-5 lessons from a jazz player, they love talking theory lol. EDIT: Those music theory things can seem very hard and almost impossible to learn at first. Stay on it, you are not alone with your struggles, it took me years to get a somehwat applicable understanding of things. But maybe you're faster than me? :) To help you get an overview of what is important and you should learn first: - Most important, learn all 12 major, minor and diminished *3-note chords* (also called *triads*) - Learn all 12 *major scales* - Realize that you can count up the notes inside each major scale from 1 to 7 (in C major, C = 1, D = 2, E = 3 etc.) - Realize that inside your respective scale you can build a *major triad* on the 1, 4 and 5, a *minor triad* on the 2, 3 and 6 and a *diminished triad* on the 7 without going outside the 7 notes of the key (*diatonic chords*) - Now you know everything to play most of the progressions mentioned in this video :) Actually, you don't need to know about modes at all to play the things from this video. But if you want to learn: A "mode" is really just a scale. If you play the C major scale (all white keys starting from C) this can already be considered a mode, the "C ionian" mode. But what happens if you instead started playing all the white keys from the G instead of the C? It won't be a C scale anymore, because it now has the sound of an G scale. But it is not the normal G major scale, it is the "G mixolydian" (5th mode of C major). This works for all the major scales (or any scale really, NewJazz has great videos about exactly this) Hope this helps and have fun with your music :)

@@ddkay6478 To understand @cious li list, it's important to learn basic scale (major/minor) and learn to count keys from 1-7 in these scales. You can expand after that with other scales and dive in more music theory elements.

Nice..... appreciated...... One suggestion: since you are doing a number of examples, a bit of titling at top or lower left as to the progression you're discussing would help, using popular notation (i.e; vi IV I V). I am often tormented by the IV, or iv? If the IV chord is made minor, how does that affect..... the key(?). Well presented; while I have a desire to teach guitar, I can't explain scales and other basics without keyboard first.

In any key, the sequence stays the same: major, minor, minor, major, major, minor, minor (diminished)... in other words: I, ii, iii, IV, V, vi, vii. I hope that helps. And I just realized, your comment was posted 2 years ago, so you've probably already figured that out by now. Lol! 😂

the C-chord at 2.52 is not a second inversion (albeit in the right hand but that wasn't specified), the lowest note (bass) counts and the one you play with your left hand is C, i.e. the root, so it's a root position chord there

😂 a lot of practice I imagine. You can break it down, separate the left and right hands and into smaller chunks. Nearly all the notes are from the 2-5-1 chord he just explained. The left hand is mostly an underlining rhythm kept constant like a bass or drum. The right hand then is doing the interesting melody/riffs. The combination of the two together, keeping it in time and on rhythm, exploring multiple octaves, whilst only playing the notes that fit, all that comes together to create something complex but that sounds 'correct'. Pianonote have other videos about how to create riffs on the right hand, how to keep the left and right hands in time, how to create a bass rhythm with the left. Basically everything comes together. Depending on your level it's better to start very simple and eventually build towards something like he played, cus otherwise it'll get messy and be frustrating. Staying on rhythm is a huge thing. I find the female teachers examples easier to replicate initially.

May have been mentioned but check what you're calling chord inversions. You were doing what would have been inversions in your right hand, however, your left hand was playing the tonic in the bass, thus the chord was technically in the root position. I know -- I struggled with that a lot. You may even be able to find someone who would argue that truly is an inversion but it really isn't.

Excellent and useful tutorial. I often use roman numerals to notate chords so it’s flexible in all keys. So, how would you notate, in roman numerals, the Bb chord in the key of C, which you call a flat 7? Technically, I think a flat 7th chord be a viiº or a fully diminished 7th chord, but that’s not what you’re referring to. As I recall from music theory, it would be a vii/vii, but this is very awkward for pop music. So, is there a more efficient way to notate in roman numerals what you call a flat seven chord or a flat 6 chord?
@robertcbonner
@robertcbonner 6 жыл бұрын
Carl Radford, you would use bVII. Uppercase means major, the flat before lowers the root, and adding a seventh (e.g. which would be a-natural on a B-flat) would be bVIImaj7. Any time you add 7 after it implies lowering it (i.e. the dominant chord G7 has a lowered 7th as compared to major 7 and the d7 of minor quality also has lowered 7.
