I was in high school in 75 and some man kidnapped and killed a classmate. He was mad because he was told by the Amarillo police that he would not be hired for the force after he completed a police academy. It took them ten years to execute him. Recently a man in one of the states was paroled after sitting on death row for 50 years. 50 years! He wasn't innocent. I think they need to overhaul the whole system. From the First Responders to the detectives to the Defense and Prosocution. Each state should specially trained people to investigate murders. Cut back on all of the appeals.

As a retired prison employee who has worked on death row, you definitely hit on the glaring obvious inequality of the capital punishment “system” you get digging around the first thing that stands out is the murderer that plea bargains pleads guilty to keep the death sentence off the table, or agrees to testify against everyone he knows gets life without parole for killing 3-5 People while the man that kills one while committing a felony pleads not guilty and argues his innocence gets “found” guilty, the second is the county in which the crimes take place a county that is the seat of the capital or large city has the money where some rural counties don’t have the money to operate a jail they simply don’t have millions of dollars it takes, so if a murderer wants to stay off death row do it in a dirt poor County then run and tell on yourself and the local drug dealer you may be eligible For parole in 15, The biggest travesty is the millions and millions spent on trial and numerous appeals back and forth for years the prosecutors fighting with the public defenders and who is paying BOTH sides??? We are brother, tax payers pay to sentence them to death, pay for their incarceration and pay to argue their innocence, if they want to serve the Tax payers sentence them to life put an armed guard on them hand them a shovel to fill some of these pot holes, just my two Cents, also death row has a scary reputation but it’s 10x more dangerous to work aroud maximum security In general population than death row they were the best behaved inmates because 99 % of them are in appeals process and they’re more concerned with lawyer visits and gaining recommendations than they are stabbing the guy next cell over

@kingayy92675 күн бұрын
Texas no longer does. From Wikipedia: "in September 2011, the state of Texas abolished all special meal requests after condemned prisoner Lawrence Russell Brewer requested a large and expensive last meal, but did not eat any of it, stating that he was not hungry." Wonder if he refused to eat it because he was trying to make a FU statement to the prison or if, understandably, anxiety regarding his imminent demise caused him to lose his appetite. Wikipedia also says that most states give the "special meal" a day or two before the execution, likely due to last-day jitters. Some states have a set price for ingredients the inmate can't exceed. I believe all ingredients must be sourced locally. No exotic French cuisine, for example. Tobacco and alcohol are prohibited.
@kingayy92675 күн бұрын
Someone made a joke about a death row inmate requesting a McRib and a Shamrock shake from McDonald's for their last meal. Since they're seasonal items that aren't sold at the same time, the inmate could theoretically stave off their sentence indefinitely. (I might have the specific items wrong, but you get the gist of the joke.)

I personally think that we need way harsher punishments across the board. I am fed up of just how often I watch shows like law and crime, only to be disgusted by how lenient the sentences are for some of the most wicked of crimes. Crime should be a deterrent. And a strong one.
@jonescrusher13 күн бұрын
Murders still happen in death penalty states, it does nothing to stop crime. In fact, murder rates tend to be higher in those states. Ending poverty is more likely to reduce crime.

@skiman5289 Cameron Todd Willingham is a horrific example. He was executed in Texas for the supposed murder of his little girls in a house fire. His conviction was obtained with faulty "fire science" and he went to his death proclaiming, truthfully, his innocence. He was posthumously exonerated. Too little, too late.
