Thanks for reminding us that triathlon fitness is not just about swim, bike, run. I do strength training at least once per week. I can’t say for sure that it makes me faster, but it definitely makes me more stable and less prone to injury.

I love lifting as well as running, it helped me shed just under 3.5 stone and go from an overweight out of puff 40 year old, to a healthy strong 42 year old with some impressive one rep max's and a 22:38 5k & 47:10 10k pb

I run 6 days a week and i'm fine. However i do road runs, trail runs, short runs, long runs, very steep hills runs, not so steep hills runs, fast runs, slow runs, and rotate 6 different pairs of shoes with different cushioning and different drops. I love it, keep improving and am not injured. Variety is the key

I have been training for my first triathlon (70.3 in Helsingor, Denmark next month) for over a year. Several folks have suggested using "systems" approach vis-a-vis kettle bells as a better work out than any "isolated" free weights workouts. Any comments to such a thing? Secondly, being a Yank (from San Fran area) coming to Europe for my big inaugural event, how many days before the race do you suggest to get acclimated to the environment and clock change? I have watched almost all of your videos and appreciate all the insight and hard work you and your team has done, Heather! Hopefully GTN will be in Helsingor next month (June 23) and I can say hello to the team! Regards, Dan Connor

I don’t doubt the benefit of S&C, but running more has always worked for me and is pretty much guaranteed to make you faster. I only see this as a way to help prevent injury and therefore enable more miles per week. (Just adding S&C alone probably won’t make you ‘much’ faster, in my opinion.)

Suggested 3 sets by 8 reps is rather for bodybuilding. But since it's basically one routine per muscle group, gaining to much of lean mass is highly unlikely. Good explanation - those crane pendulum stuff must rock.... I mean: must activate higher "rear end" for running strides comparing to rubber band pull-backs. Will try. Explaining advantage of free weights for shoulders stability rocks too.
@ellismccoy
@ellismccoy 5 жыл бұрын
Agree I would think the point of this is to increase strength primarily. I'd suggest lowering reps (max of 5) and increasing weight. That's certainly the consensus in the cycling community at the moment.

"wide grip to engage the lat muscles more specifically" the underhand close grip pull-up is actually a better exercise for engaging the lats since it gives a better stretch on the muscle.

Heather Fell I totally understand and agree - and that’s coming from a guy who loves gear lol. I should have nuanced and mention it might generally not be a problem with relatively light loads. But while I’m not advocating buying serious weightlifting shoes, I still feel a firmer platform like some dedicated cross trainers are better and to a certain extent safer for squats. Specially compared to those magical cloud On shoes 😅 not trying to spark debate and I really appreciate your response, maybe I’m too old school but for me if the sole is too bouncy/soft I don’t use them for squats and would rather go with socks or barefoot for maximum control and support from the ground up. In any case, thanks again for your reply and video!
