There are primarily 6 maladaptive or faulty thinking styles that are common in people with ocd and anxiety disorders. These are much more than an irrational thought here or there, these are cognitive patterns, schemas or ways of thinking.
The first type of faulty cognition is perfectionism. Perfectionism, is considered a personality trait, and it is a rigid pattern of thinking and behaving. While perfectionism is not a formal diagnosis, it is an indication that a person is more likely to have OCD or OCPD obsessive compulsive personality disorder.
The second type of maladaptive thinking is over-estimating personal responsibility. This is common in people with OCD and health anxiety. It also may explain why people with OCD are so prone to guilt and shame. An inflated sense of responsibility is much more prominent in people with OCD than those with anxiety disorders. In fact, the higher people scored on having a sense of personal responsibility, the higher their severity of OCD.
The third faulty thinking pattern is over estimating threats. I see this in not only my clients with ocd, but those with anxiety disorders, especially those with panic disorder, agoraphobia, social anxiety and health anxiety.
They misinterpret a sensation, or a thought as something threatening, dangerous or unbearable when in reality it may be uncomfortable but not harmful.
The fourth cognition error is called thought/action fusion. And this a process of over estimating the significance and importance of your thoughts. People with this pattern can exhibit magical thinking where they believe that just by thinking about something will make it more likely to happen.
Thought-action fusion is not specific to ocd and is experienced equally in people with anxiety disorders. But, thought action fusion is correlated with negative emotions in people with ocd and is implicated in the maintenance of the ocd cycle.
The fifth faulty thinking process is having an intolerance of uncertainty. Having an intolerance of uncertainty, or unknowing, only seems to impact people in specific areas of their lives, where they feel most vulnerable.
A person with health anxiety might have difficulty tolerating uncertainty in regards to their health, but might be concerned about relationships or work. The area where you want certainty gives you a window into the part of yourself that feels most vulnerable.
And the sixth and final maladaptive cognitive process is the over control of thoughts. This particular faulty thinking pattern is greater in people with ocd compared to people with anxiety disorders.

Thank you Paige, mine has been over estimating threats and their consequences. Your F.A.C.E. strategy has been a life saver. I've accepted anxiety as a part of my life and my relationship to my thoughts and emotions has been more healthy as a result.

So inspiring that you recognize that and are using F.A.C.E. : - Face Fear with an attitude of willingness - Allow the symptoms to be there - Commit to staying in it and Coach yourself - Embrace the experience and Encourage yourself ❤️

I have patterns of comparing myself constantly to others. I also have expectations and disappointments relating to them, I catastrophize and have constant fears of mental collapse. I am applying your methods to reduce those thoughts patterns and I notice improvements already. You are so trustworthy thanks to your research citations. You are the best!

Thank you for the compliment. Most humans do evaluate and compare themselves. I wonder if we do this because it was so important for early man’s survival to be included in the tribe. But it may not be so helpful for us anymore. Perhaps we can have compassion for that part of ourselves that wants to do our best, measure up, not disappoint, and be welcomed, included, respected, loved and accepted. ❤️

My biggest thinking trap is believing neglect and abuse will repeat itself at every turn...but mindfulness has helped me realize this is a conditioned thought patter and doing CBT and mindfulness has helped me in the long run. The book "30 Days to Reduce Anxiety" by Harper Daniels had some mindfulness exercises that I connect with, plus it was a simple program to follow. The mind is sometimes too centered on itself...it's so important to step away from the mind for even 5 minutes a day.

I definitely have Magical Thinking. Then again, I'm an indigenous Hawaiian that believes the Breath or Ha brings everything into being. Metaphysical thoughts says where thoughts go energy flows. Conjuring with intent describes 50% of cultures world wide. We interact with nature and energies. I often feel like my cultural beliefs clash with western psychology. It can be confusing sometimes and cause anxiety. Especially since I'm living in the modern 50th state.

I believe there is room for culture and psychology and spirituality and science to coexist and intertwine. However for certain conditions like OCD, a person can become trapped in their imagination and this can cause great suffering. It seems if we are able to keep an open mind and have the flexibility to view things from different perspectives, we are all better off. I have had some experiences in my life that I cannot explain, and I am sure you have as well. And a part of me does not want an explanation at all. 😊

hello paige :) thank you for you unique content. You go straight to the point without redundant talking, with amazing english suitable for even english newbies. I have a question. There are tons of people who get brainfog because of anxiety. Their mind is so occupied with anxiety they are almost disconnected from everything. What would you do when you are getting thousands proofs everyday your brain doesnt work and you know about it. What to do when you catch yourself again you cant recall name of your partner or you put detergent into a fridge without even remember it? thank you, there are tons of young people who doest have any alergy or dementia but suddenly they are in weird brainfog state and heavy anxaity and simply dont kniw what to do, because anxiety is scary but have broken brain is almost horibly scary 😁

I understand how scary and confusing those situations would be. Anxiety can at times hijack our brains including our memory and recall and our concentration. Yet, worrying about it only results in an even more anxious brain. Practicing self compassion and understanding and giving ourselves grace when we are anxious can help. And perhaps practicing daily stress management like hiking to reconnect ourselves to nature and the moment we are living.

How someone with real health issues should deal with the health anxiety?
@PaigePradkoTherapy
@PaigePradkoTherapy 10 ай бұрын
I advise people to discuss their health issues and health maintenance plan with their physicians. You will need a plan for what symptoms require attention and what needs to be tolerated but is not an emergency. Many symptoms may feel uncomfortable but are not dangerous and that also needs to be discussed with your medical providers. If you find that you are experiencing many appointments and tests where the results are normal or “negative”, than it is possible you are seeking reassurance when the symptoms are not harmful or dangerous and possibly associated with anxiety. I review more on how to have these conversations with your medical providers in my health anxiety course. 😊
