So, just a recap: 1: Short barrel (18-20”) 2: Short stock (12-13” for proper mounting) 3: Mag extension (5-6 rounds in the gun) 4: Spare ammo (side saddle or stock carrier) 5: Sight upgrade (although not essential) 6: Mounted light (for obvious reasons)

I even put a few pop rivets in just to make sure that it didn't separate. I then put some velcro on the side of my mossberg 500, works great. They have lasted over 3 years. None have gotten loose. It is a piece of cake to drop a couple packs of shotgun shells into my side pocket.

Having some sort of flashlight is literally the most important characteristic of any defensive weapon. You HAVE to know what you're pointing your gun at. It's more important than what sights you have. It's more important than even having sights at all. It's more important than ammo choice, grips, stocks, anything. It's literally priority number one as far as accessories. The one and only thing that's more important than a flashlight is practice.

Australian Eugenics Expert As much as I really don’t want to get into a debate about guns in the US... I feel like alarm systems act more as a deterrent than an actual line of defense. You’re right that a criminal can and has done that. But it’s most likely to scare away dumb criminals and you’re left with the smart ones breaking in. Smart criminals are going to plan out when you’re not home and break in then. A shotgun really has no benefit there. Sometimes yes. Someone will be dumb enough to break in with an alarm system while you’re home. That’s extremely unlikely from my experience and at some point it’s better to accept the loss and have nobody hurt or killed than to pop em’ in the head or chest at short range. But you know shotguns are nice for other uses so I’m not saying no to having one for fun and keeping it for home safety also.

From my experience with lights, using a surefire for end dedicated light would be a better choice than adding a separate light to the forend. Reason being, if you have ever shot a 12 gauge with a light as close to the forend like shown in this video, the recoil will make that rack come back and dig the light in to your hand, which is painful. I've done it to myself more than once when I practiced at the range, bought a surefire dsf and never had that trouble again. Just my .02

Tw things: 1. Dogs are members of the family too 2. What about a sling?
@LuckyGunner8 жыл бұрын
I like my dog, but the guilt I would feel if I accidentally shot him would pale in comparison to the pain and psychological torture I would endure if I accidentally shot one of my kids. I understand the sentiment, but I prefer to make a distinction there. I'm not a big fan of slings on home defense guns. First, you probably shouldn't be carrying it anywhere because you shouldn't be trying to clear your own house, especially not with a long gun. The shotgun is a "bunker defense" weapon when you can safely stay in one spot and engage an attacker only if they come to you. If you must move around the house, turn on lights, open doors, etc, a handgun is a better tool. But even if you were to be mobile in the home with a shotgun, the sling is going to be more of a hindrance than a help. It would really suck if you were trying to check out a bump in the night end you end up getting disarmed by a doorknob that snagged your sling.

I don't have a light attached to a weapon, but the first thing I did when I got my first modern firearm is dig out a decent bright small 'tactical' flashlight I had and keep it on the desk. Once a week or so I practice going down the hall with it alongside my pistol in the dark (usually after a range day when I'm in the mood; I've done same with the shotgun holding it alongside with fore hand). It is amazing how often it seems people fail to consider lights. No one wants to shoot the wrong thing or person indeed, but to do that you need to see!

I don't think its a good idea to be holding a flashlight while simultaneously running a pump 12 gauge. I feel like theres too much room for error if shit hits the fan
@PopeMcGrope Жыл бұрын
Handgun, sure. Long gun? NO. get a dedicated mount and light bud, we dont want you dying cause you couldnt run the gun effectively enough with a flash light in hand.

Personally I prefer a few kilowatts of CO2 laser, as that's more practically available. Just reconfigure the guts of a laser cutter and add a long extension cord or Li-Ion backpack.

The only qualm I have is the sight. I am much faster with a bead, I can make very good fast hits with slugs at 50yd, and solid hits at 100yds, both much much further than any distance in any house I have been in.
@barryjustice86569 жыл бұрын
+Moto Rad Not everyone has great eyesight. When you get older your eye sight deteriorates, consequently a sight upgrade is really necessary. I can't use the bead sights anymore, so I am switching over to red dot sights and I love them.

Barry Justice That is a good point I have not considered. 20/20 spoils you.
@Rick-wn5oh8 жыл бұрын
Also have you ever tried shooting that way in very low light? That bead can get really hard to see way out there. Also there is a reason the military is going to optics. Those reasons apply to rifles and shotguns equally.
@moto_rad8 жыл бұрын
Richard Lamoreaux That is a good consideration. I have never shot slugs in low light. I would prefer a red dot probably, but I don't think I would benefit at all in that case from ghost rings. While optics would provide a benefit, ghost rings would not (for me).

Which delivers more stopping power? Slugs or Buckshot?
@LuckyGunner9 жыл бұрын
+Jake Norden Both have a very good track record for stopping attackers with a single upper torso shot. Two in some rare instances. Slugs typically have more recoil and tend to over penetrate, so buckshot is preferred for home-defense. Slugs are better when you need to reach past 25-35 yards, which is more relevant for hunting than for personal protection.
@Tradley7 жыл бұрын
Slugs but you may want the spread that you get with buckshot
@PODSMPSG16 жыл бұрын
Slugs hit harder, but they might hit too hard for defense. Buckshot hits hard enough for defense.

The Maverick 88 in either the youth 20 gauge or 12 guage. Even the full size with a youth stock is great. 8 rounds of 12 gauge buckshot with a tac light and 5 more on the stock does well.

I have a mossberg 500 tactical with a 26 inch barrel setting in the closet. Now it might look a little funny with a short adjustable stock and the side saddles for extra rounds. Now in about 10 minutes I can turn this gun back into a pretty decent hunting shotgun. I had an old bandelier laying around and I chopped it up into 5 round segments. Went out and bought a roll of velcro. Glued that to the bandelier. I now have 50 rounds of shotgun shells pre-loaded onto the side saddles and stored in a box.

590 Shockwave SPX: 1) ✅ short barrel: 14.375” 2) ❌ short stock: lol 3)✅ mag extension: 5+1 regular cap. 8+1 with mini’s 4)✅ spare ammo: side saddle 5 or 10 minis doubled up 5)❌ sight upgrade: have a laser but really want a small red dot 6)✅ light: laser light combo attached to small 2” rail on mag tube All in all, train with what you have and you can make up for most deficiencies. The lack of stock doesn’t cause trouble anymore. The sight is obviously just a preference thing, but I try not to rely on the laser downrange.

Most burgerlys don't consist of more than 1 or 2 people mag carrier ✔ cheap on amazon upgraded sights X I don't have a gunsmith Light X but i am looking at a pikitinny rail mount to attach a light
@reonthornton6855 жыл бұрын
Most burglaries don't, some do, and if you're unlucky enough to have that, or, alternatively, you miss, having more rounds. The entire point of the gun is to prepare for the worst case scenario, because if you have to pull a gun in the first place, it's already a pretty bad situation. It also gives you more room to fire warning shots if you deem that a good course of action.
@bigt97455 жыл бұрын

I agree with 1,2,4,and 6. We’re talking home defense not self defense. If self defense were the case, all points valid. I use a Pardner single shot 12 gauge for home defense 32in overall length, extra 5 shells in a slip on saddle, snap on fiber optic sight(only because it has none, bead sight would be just fine), limbsaver recoil pad, and number 4 buck. One in the chamber 2 in the saddle, and three rounds of 00( that’s double ought not double-0 for you non gun dudes). That’s what I feel comfortable with, and yes I own quite a few other guns it’s just this is the one I set out as a home defense firearm. Pro tip- if I ever have to use it just slip the saddle off and it looks like a damn grandpa gun, not some tacked out death machine. Something to think about. Sorry for this long comment good video non the less, I gave it a like.
