As a kid i found it revolutionary for how you can use momentum in that game. It was so fun to become the pirate boss. I never did finish all the story though, always got sidetracked just stealing shit or blowing stuff up.

I played the hell out of freelancer, the modding community kept it alive way past it's expiration date. Or the x-wing series, again great modding community, but this was more like a space combat sim. I still play elite dangerous which is probably the most realistic sim to this date.

You should look at Xcom interceptor. Basically merge X-Wing with Xcom, it was great for it's time, an underappreciated gem. Base building, team building, inventory management and cool dogfights.

Space Engineers is, while principally a sound concept with an attractive premise, nothing but an uninspired katamari ball of barely functioning tech demos in reality that should never have left EA, and like every update is just going to receive more jank to this ball being held together by little more than a geriatric, dead-end game engine, spit, and blinkered, unwavering support by zealous redditors with mindbogglingly low standards and seemingly endless pain tolerance who will defend anything and everything out of Carrot Palace against even the most basic remarks on things that are lacking or unintuitive, all implemented by a disinterested bunch of game designers and developers as a pet project to milk for funds to finance Marek's hare-brained AI scheme.

It's only issue as far as i remember, once you completed the main Story it either just ends or at least there was nothing left to do. I think it wasn't particular long either i think, but my memory is a bit fuzzy after all these years.

I played Rebel galaxy. Short, but nice. Liked it.

Rebel Galaxy was short because it wasn't the game the Devs wanted to make. The Game they started designing was Rebel Galaxy Outlaws which was a fighter style piloting game but realized the market was over saturated and so they made Rebel Galaxy, then used the funds they got from that games success to spend more money and time on Outlaws and released it when they felt the market was right. Sad really because I prefer the capital ship combat over fighter combat and I thought Rebel Galaxy could have had far more story behind it.

3:30 The spinny controls in Tachyon: The Fringe does have a fix. I bought the game when it was first released on CD. Had the same problem. Fixed it. Don't remember how though, it was several years ago. WORTH doing the fix though, the game is fantastic (for the period). GREAT space dog-fighting sim. An intriguing story of corporate espionage among the stars. And, come on, Bruce "Don't Call Me Ash" Campbell as the main character. If you've never tried it, go play it tomorrow. WORTH IT.

Oh yeah, Tachyon. I loved it back then. I heard the line "I gotta hold this bucket of bolts together!" so often that it rings in my head even today when I fight in Star Citizen or Elite: Dangerous 😁

Rebel galaxy was good, i liked how ship combat was different. Rather then dog fighting, its more like naval old ships shooting cannons on the side of the ship.

when it comes to space games, my first and one of my faves has always been the "Wing Commander" franchise.... with a close second from the online game "Earth and Beyond"... i think after that came "Freelancer" and then "Star Trek Online"... i have touched a bit with "Eve Online" but my current goto space game IS "Space Engineers"... and honestly its a game that should have hours played in the thousands.... i can't even say what my total playtime in SE is since offline play time is NEVER recorded by Steam....

How about Haegemonia: Legions of Iron by Digital Reality, and its successor, Solon Heritage? Most gorgeous explosions of (and since!) 2002!

If you can get Solon Heritage working on a modern machine, check out the Vector Prime mod as well. Probably one of the best looking Star Wars conversions I've seen, especially the weapon effects.

Really happy to see space engineers made this list! I definitely sank tons of hours into the game trying to create the perfect asteroid mining ship or star fighter. I never got confident enough to re-create the krait from elite dangerous but someone else did a pretty good job. Still aspire to build my own but haven't come around to tackle that one yet lol. I REALLY can't wait to see the coming update from Keen that's meant to expand pve and survival portions of the game. I'm gonna have to check out rebel galaxy and dark star. Both sound right up my ally. Thanks for the heads up

Starcom Unknown space might "tecnhically" be playable on steam deck, but personally I don't consider any game that doesn't have controller support playable on the steamdeck. whats weird is starcom nexus would play just fine on the deck (text was really small, but otherwise good) it's weird that the next one didn't support controllers

Oolite - Completely free space trading and combat sim based on the classic game Elite. Easily expandable with hundreds of add-ons. Seriously, just drop the add-ons you want to use into the AddOns directory. If you don't like them, just delete the files.

I may suggest more 4 games to a list, Empyreon Galactic survival wich is a direct competitor with SE. Starship Evo wich is basically just the crafting part of of Empyreon and SE. Space Haven wich is a 2d version of this type of games. Osiris': New Dawn that is more like a Subnautica...

All the Space Engineers footage you showed was from years go. Pre-Warfare 2 update. Warfare 2 completely changed the game. Weapons ranges more than doubled. There were new damage mechanics added, exploding tanks and ammunition magazines. Then Automatons update changed it again. AI blocks that allow you to make drones and pmw missiles with no scripting or mods. The things you can do in game are completely different than before these updates.
