62 years old now, and I have played them all. For me, Civ 4 is the best. Being voiced by Nimoy was just brilliant. I have on Steam, Beyond Earth, Civ 3, 4, 5 and 6. But Civ 4 is still the one that I return to the most. Mind you, I wish I still had my copy of Civ 2. It would be nice to try that one again after all these years.

42 years young now, I've played all them of. I remember being blown away by CIV 1, even though I didn't understand English at the time. CIV 2 was a massive upgrade, but CIV 4 takes the cake for me. Colonization was also great. And Alpha Centauri was epic as well. If I had to rank them it would probably be Civ 4, Civ 2, Colonization, Civ 1, Civ 3, AC, Civ 4 - Colonization, Civ 6 and 5 on the bottom.

CIV 5 was my favorite. I didn't like how CIV 4 limited the number of cities you could found by imposing an increasing cost for each city built, which forced you to have to attack other civilizations if you wanted to expand. In other words, I felt like the game limited the number of strategies you could employ to win, or at least, win without a sever penalty. I loved the lack of stacking and the hex grid in Civ 5, which I thought added to the strategic depth of the game.

You could fix overexpansion easy, organised trait saved 50% but code of law unlocked caste system. You just put a merchant speciast in every city each giving 3 gold. Build the courthouse and another 50% of you maintenance costs disappeared. Then when you got a great person, you sent him off for a bundle of gold.

I think a remastered Civ I would make a great mobile game, instead of Civilization Revolutions. Civ II would be wonderful if remastered. I don't know if there'd be a lot of difference between remastered Civ II and Civ III in terms of look and feel. So, instead of remastering them individually, maybe create a new single remaster of those games combined with options to choose between rules and gameplay mechanics when you start a game. Civ IV still looks great. I'm not sure a remaster is necessary for it yet, other than maybe increasing the resolution.

I am genZ player. So I remember playing the civ 3 at my granfather’s computer but I was like 5-7 y.o. So for me the ‘classical’ one is civ 4. I loved the game and I remember how I hated the civ 5 when it released for lacking so many features or strange mechanics. Today after playing civ V and civ VI with all dlc I can say my ranking is: 1) Civ VI - because I love the complexity of this game and all the planning stuff. It just offers so much more than civ V. I love music, graphics, natural wonders, energy and resources, units and governments. I like eras and casus belli mechanics. Scientific victory is the most interesting in the series. On the bad sides: world congress (yikes), religion (it’s so dull to spread and it gives so many broken buffs) and I don’t like how easily the captured town can work for you although it’s just has been captured 2) CiV V - I love the units and combat, simpliness of the map and how easy it is to read. I like the balance between civs and how they have mang to offer. I love music - some of the best themes of the series. Also I love the tourism mechanics (better than civ VI) I dislike world congress (and religions (same as in VI), ideologies (and random city swapping) and warmongering mechanics. 3) Civ IV I love the culture mechanics and 1 battle - one kill combat. I love the health mechanics, random events, AI difficulty, villages mechanics and farm irrigation. On the bad side for me: global warming, omg I hated the desertification. I hated the death stacks of units and music in modern/ future era. I also kind of preffer units design from civ V/VI

I would largely agree with your ranking. My husband and I have been playing the Civ series ever since Civ I, which made our Christmas in 1991. (That and it being our newborn twin sons' 1st Christmas!) Loved Civ II and all of its mods. (Those twin boys especially loved "helping" Mom play the Dinosaurs mod in the Test of Time expansion.) Enjoyed Civ III, but was disappointed at its lack of mod-ability. The Civ IV soundtrack is still superb (and I have a playlist of it saved on KZbin, which makes great "background noise" at work). I've played a lot of Civ V and its expansions (and it's the last one I played a lot of) My husband has played Civ VI, but I mostly have just enjoyed the music (especially the Christopher Tin song based on the Leonardo da Vinci poem about flight). Same thing with Beyond Earth & its expansion: I enjoyed the intro movies and still listen to the soundtrack, but never really got into playing the game. Thanks for bringing back a lot of good memories!

I have been playing ALL CIV titles throughout my life as they are released…for me personally, my best memories are with CIV II & III. We would play 3 person multiplayer games, all from different consoles in the same room. Add a 12 pack of favorite beer and a couple bags of chips and it was GAME ON! For me personally, Civ III was the last iteration that felt fun and addictive. I started playing the original Civ in 1992 on my roommate's PC (I didn't get my own until 1994) in the barracks of Ford Ord, and it was certainly fun, but Army duties and the fact it wasn't my own computer meant I rarely got to play. When I did get my own PC, Civ was the very 1st game I bought and until that PC died on me in 1998, I played the hell out of it. Once I upgraded my PC a few months later, I discovered that Civ II existed, and that was such a paradigm shift. The game was so much better looking and the increased complexity made for games that became much longer and satisfying. Where a full game of Civ I might take 5-6 hours, a full game of Civ II now took at least a whole day, and since I worked full time, if I started a game Monday after work, I might not finish until Wednesday or Thursday night. Civ II was the peak iteration for me. Civ III in 2001 was the last time I got massive enjoyment from the game. It introduced just enough new complexity to appreciate a more sophisticated approach to my strategies without taking it too far, as Civ IV and every version since. I played Civ III extensively until I bought Civ IV in 2006, and since then I have played each new iteration less and less. I did give Civ IV a fighting chance, playing often for a few years, but it just never hooked me the way the previous three did. Every game felt like an obligation. Civ V and Civ VI sit on my current computer (I switched from PC to Mac in 2014) both having barely been played more than a few times each. I'll give Civ VII a shot, but I don't have much optimism that it will do much for me, and I can only hope to be pleasantly surprised.

I remember playing Civilization II back in the day. My civilization was way behind on tech. There was a rule you could only steal one tech from one city with a diplomat (spy). So I sneaked diplomats around the world and all at once they stole techs in the same turn. Great times! The videoa-nimated and voice-acted council was also awesome.Maybe corny but I found it really amusing back then. I used to make my own sounds for the game too. You'd hear an air-raid alarm, a voice saying "Bombs gone, bombs gone (got that from a fighter game) and then the explosion. There were also some great scenario's like fighting aliens with much better tech then you, a wwII scenario and one based around Masters of Orion.

I'm not sure where I'd rank the bottom 5, but my top 3, in order are: 1. Civ VI 2. Civ V 3. Civ Rev That last one probably deserves some explanation. The game is marketed as a 1 - 2 hour Civ game and it lives up to that promise. I don't play Civ Rev when I want a 10+ hour experience. I play it when I want the feeling of Civ but only have a short time to devote to the game. That latter point matters to me as I get older and my time becomes more limited. The way the game is streamlined is practically perfect and I feel extremely satisfied at the end of a Civ Rev game. I can't always say the same of other Civ games.

Been playing since Civ 1 when it was released and this is my favorite PC gaming strategy series of all time. 1. Civ 4 - with BtS, this is the best, deepest, most fun Civ. Plus, Leonard Nimoy and a fucking Grammy. 2. Civ 2 - Just an excellent follow up to #1. I still hear "BUILD CITY WALLS" in my sleep. 3. Civ 6 - I know this is going to surprise many since it does have poor AI (hallmark of the entire series, really) and some clunky mechanics. But frankly it's just trendy to hate on it - the going rage for the Internet the last decade - and I think it's a blast to play. 4. Civ 1 - The original. The king. You have discovered explosives. BOOM! That explosion rocked gaming forever. Almost flunked out of college due to playing this game so much. 5. Civ 5 - The whole one unit per tile was a fresh take as were the districts. But the game never quite was as much fun as some iterations. 6. Civ 3 - I played this one the least. Some cool stuff but that corruption mechanic could be frustrating as hell. It always felt to me like the step back that allowed 4 to take a massive leap forward. 7. Beyond Earth - Billed as the successor to SMAC, it had none of the heart, depth or charm of SMAC. It felt like a mediocre mod and remains the only Civ I never even bothered getting the expansions for. This game was basically a trash money grab. Two honorable mentions: 1.5 SMAC - Holy hell this game has never been equaled. You could even alter terrain to impact rainfall patterns to screw your neighbors. The various factions gave this game so much feel and depth it was incredible. I'd put this between 4 and 2 and is easily one of the best 4X games ever made. 3.5 Colonization - There's the original and the mod for Civ 4. I'm really thinking more the mod for Civ 4 as the original is now 30 years old. It had some pretty rough mechanics and could be brutally difficult at times. Heck, your first inland settlement was always going to be a major struggle. But the economy-building, the diplomacy and the trade gives this game an entirely different feel. I'm still waiting on a modern take on this one.

I would rate civ I first, CIV 5,CIV 6, Alpha Centauri (not really a Civ game But I'll place it here since it was Sid's partner's game), Beyond Earth and the rest I haven't played and not really into it. If I could only play a Civ game out of all of them, It would be the Original Civ, It was funny as hell. I hope CIV 7 will be in my top 3.

original civ had one great thing most of later civ's didnt had. You could play on map on earth and you could make your own civilization (change name over one of the existing ones). Also map seemed bigger tbh then in the newest civ's. Also nice would be comparing thoes civ's to the civilization call to power series (it was great one also).

Awesome list! My brother never was a Civ player and only knew about the games because I was talking about them all the time. However, he decided to play CIV Revolution and loved it. He spent many hours with the game but he never really got into the proper CIV series of games, but it speaks to the quality of the game that someone like my brother would play a CIV game. CIV II was the first CIV game I ever played and I was hooked immediately. On PS1 I played this game for hours each day and hardly ever played anything else for over a year. To this day I remember the music, the wonder videos, the Advisors and the road spaghetti on every tile. I might have even fallen in love with the foreign advisor, especially when she said that my relations with other nations were "remarkable" with a little curtsy at the end. CIV IV and II are easily my favourite entries in the series and my least favourite is VI.

I suspect that the AI in the first Civilization was actually the best. I remember the Ai launching full-on seaborne invasions on the scale of the Normandy landings, with transports landing large numbers of tanks and infantry on the shore. No Civ game since then has done anything of the sort. I agree though that Civ II probably had the most impact and was a superb game. I've tried it recently and just can't cope with the primitive graphics any more. Same with Civ IV, also an excellent version. Civ V is still playable and I remember how Civ III introduced culture flipping, and outposts for mining strategic resources that were outside your territory - an innovation sadly missed.

Civ is the dearest franchise to me. I've loved all of them in their time, but I never really looked back, after the new one came out. Partly because I want to master the new/recent one. And, with every iteration civ has become increasingly pretty with lots of attention to detail. Lots of it does nothing for the gameplay but completes the immersion. Every civ game is a representation of an entire world and its looks, sounds and makes it feel like one. These waters in 7 look crazy good. And have you seen the birds? That said, the one that still pulled me back many years later was Alpha Centary and its DLC Alien Crossfire.

I first discovered civ at the civ 3 level. My brother and I played thousands of hours of this game on our family’s PC. We never got the chance to play civ 4 before civ 5 came out and i got that. Didn’t enjoy it as much as civ 3 because of the lack of unit. Stacking and lack of game knowledge overall. I have played a ton of civ 6 and am eagerly waiting for civ 7 which i am sure i will play a ton of. For me Civ 3 was the core memory. Learning as a child and exploring a game with so much to it that replay was the only way to learn. (Before KZbin days) it was great to have to find out on your own what strategies worked and what did not based solely on gameplay experience. I miss those days.

Mods for Civ IV are just something else. I didn't see such great mods in so big quantity for Civ V and VI. Rhye's and Fall (with modmods!), Fall from Heaven 2, Caveman 2 Cosmos, Realism Invictus, Varietas Delectat and much much more! I didn't play much the base game tbh. I was spoiled by the mods :D Only downside is that the rulers didn't change their appearance each age like in Civ III!

I played 1-5, played the most of 1 and 2 but I think 3 is vastly underrated. I'd argue it came closest to perfecting the formula created in Civ 1, and with mods is still fun today. 4 and 5 both fall into the sequel trap of trying to be bigger and flashier, they introduced some cool features but for every improvement there was something else from the original formula they made worse. I'll take the straightforward presentation and strategic choices of Civ 3 over the increasingly cartoony graphics and glut of overlapping and contradictory features in later versions.

Civ 4 had the best mod ever - Fall from Heaven 2. It added magic like changing the terrain of a tile from desert, summoning units, units which attacked the weakest unit in a stack, units which respawned once per turn, Hell Terrain which spread across the map as the Armageddon Counter creeped up... It was awesome. I've tried most of the others. Civ3 had too many cities, all too similar, slowing late game to a crawl. Civ5 hexes were great, removal of stacking wasn't great at all. The ranged unit mechanics also felt illogical, archers shot further than tanks. Units shooting more than 1 tile should have been strictly late game artillery, archers should have had no retaliation or something similar. I bounced from Civ6 after just a few hours. I just wasn't having fun. I don't think I'll be trying out Civ7, the series has moved into a direction I don't like.

Nice video - I'm glad you put CivIV at the top (childhood nostalgia aside), as it does stand out for its depth and AI. Civ2 was my introduction to the series and was outstanding, but CivIV has the same virtues but more. I bought Civ2 again a while back for nostalgia but sadly the version lacked the High Council videos that were such fun (e.g. the drunken military adviser's "No complaints, noble leader!"). I tried Civ6 and there is so much good stuff in it, but the AI just doesn't seem to know how to use it and seems basically broken (e.g. a Civ with a supposedly warmongering nature never built a military unit). It's strange as Civ has always stood out among complex strategy games as having a competitive AI. I keep coming back to CivIV and making lists of "lessons learnt" about each thing I did wrong that put me behind in each game. The CivIV AI needs only the slightest advantage to romp ahead of me in grabbing land.
