Still Here. Just found your channel yesterday. I'm enjoying it. I first switched to a Sony A7 RII from a Nikon D800 because of the super small size of the Sony yet with the same sensor. With the little 55mm f/1.8 Zeiss it was fantastic for everyday carry around, travel, and street. Now, I use an A7R IV, and I pretty much have all the same reasons that you do for liking it. I'm more stills oriented, so I chose this one rather than the more video focused Sony's. Still, the A7R IV has pretty good video, too. One thing you left out of this particular video is that a few of the latest Sony GM lenses equal the best from anyone! The 24mm f/1.4 GM, the 105MM f/1.8, and from reviews, at least, the brand new 35mm and 50mm f/1.2 GM lenses should all be about at future proof as you can get these days.

I find that when I’m leaving the house with one camera, I’m mostly reaching for my little Sony.

I currently shoot with the Nikon Z6. I started my photography career back in the 80's with a Nikon F3 film camera and started back then with Nikon Ai-S manual focus lenses which I still have today. Then I got introduced to Zeiss classic Zf lenses and my photography took off. Like you said in this video that your reason you stick with Sony is because of the lens mount and the high quality glass that you've invested in. Like the saying goes " marry the lenses and date the body" is good words to live by. I have over $10k invested in some of the best glass from many years ago. So I stick with the Nikon eco-system because of the lenses. And Nikon F-mount been the same mount since the fifties until Nikon stepped in to their new S-line lenses for their Z line of cameras and those lenses are some of the best glass of the modern day. So if anybody want to start out in a camera system it's best to think long term about the lenses for that eco-system and make your investment more geared towards the lenses and don't get caught up on camera bodies. Like Terry said in this video that new cameras come out like every 8 months or so but the lenses will last a lifetime and without the lenses focusing the light off a subject and capturing that image onto the camera's sensor that creates the beautiful images that the world will remember. Keep making the great content Terry and thank you for the positive messages that you bring
@russellwright99613 жыл бұрын
I share your sentiments about the F Mount and S Mount, more so about the S Mount because as you mentioned it's some of the best glass of the modern day; in fact, some of the 1.8 S lenses are better than some of the 1.4 F mounts. I think Nikon is a step ahead with the new mount on the Z line, there is so much potential ahead with the design!

Always enjoy your videos! I use the R5, as a Photography first user though. The IBIS is still the best and the autofocus on these cameras nowadays is pretty insane regardless of which one you use lol. Canon's Video autofocus has been top-notch even on the R with its Dual Pixel AF but it had great tracking to begin with I know Sony camera's like the A7RIV and now the A7C all come with the newer tracking system that improved quite a bit. There's always the right tool for the right job and there's no hating that! I like trading gear with my friends when we want to try something new so I was using the A7III recently with the 24mm 1.4, 55mm 1.8 and the Sigma 85mm 1.4 (can tell why you loved the 24mm lol).

I've been filming for 49 years and have used many different makes of film cameras and pro and consumer camcorders. The last 7 years I've been using a combination of film cameras and DLSR (canon) and mirrorless cameras (Sony). The product leaders many years ago in the film cameras were Panasonic and Sony. So Sony have been in the film industry for decades. I'm still shooting many events, but now I'm using a Sony A7iii, a a6400 and a6600. The last two do not have a recording time limit unlike the A7iii. I now get great results and as you day the low light definition without noise is a cut above the rest. They're light weight, so I don't have a big camera on my shoulder anymore.

Thanks Terry for always giving such honest and straightforward information around this. You were one of the first content creators I started watching, and a big part of the reason I chose Sony. My first camera was the Sony ZV1 which is what I started learning on, then I made the big jump to the a7SIII with a GM 24-70 and 18-35 lens. Rigged the a7SIII out with that DSLR Video Shooter Perfect Camera Rig. With the Aa7SIII rigged out and my ZV1 as my B cam, everything works perfect in my home studio. Loving my Sony setup so far. If I get good enough, one of these days I might get an A1, that’s if I can live without the flippy screen. Canon is sometimes tempting (especially with the EOS R5C) but I’m pretty deeply invested in the Sony ecosystem; plus the R5C battery life and need for external power on some settings was a deal-breaker for me (not to mention the lack of full HDMI). Bottom line though as you rightly point out there’s no perfect camera, and any of the big names has great options. It’s also always human instinct for folks to try to justify their purchase, which is where I think fanboys are born. Loving my Sony for now, but who knows what the future holds. My dream is one day to become good enough to shoot with RED, but that’s a jump that’s way way down the road.

All of your points are Hella Valid, except one, but I think I know where you were going with it and that is when you talked about len mounts and full frame lenses working with crop sensor bodies and having good auto focus. Canon and Nikon dslr full frame lenses work on their crop sensored bodies with full autofocus, but I believe your point was that by Sony using one mount, e mount, there are no adapters across their whole line of Cameras and Cinema cameras. Adapters especially for Nikon Z series when using the Nikon d series lenses, become manual focus only. This is one of many reasons that I added a Sony Camera, the A7rIII and very soon A9 to my line up of Nikon and Fuji. Many complain about the menus, but once they are set up and the buttons are programmed you are not making changes often. Im currently using Blackmagic for video only currently. You have outstanding content by the way.

Good video and some legit points. I have mostly shot Canon over my 17 year career as a photographer, but I have shot them all. Canon, Sony, Nikon, Panasonic, Fuji, Olympus, Hasselblad etc...It would be very boring to only shoot one brand and never experiment with other brands. Like only driving one brand of car or playing one brand of guitars, would get old. I chose to switch from Canon to Sony mostly because of Canon keeping the RF mount closed to 3rd party. Honestly, it's sooo tempting to switch to a modern Sony full frame mirrorless, but in all honesty I'm stoked on what I'm getting out of the Canon with L series lenses, and I don't see much of an improvement happening with a new body. For now, I'm working on gaining experience and skills before I make a switch. People put too much emphasis on gear imo, especially bodies; a new body is nice but as you said all cameras are great nowadays, it's about what you do with them and what suits your needs. I'm a Canon user and I can appreciate the points you brought up. However, I do think that Canon's low to mid tier cameras are better than Sony's. I'd take an A7S III over an R5 or R6 any day, but for beginners on a budget I'd definitely recommend going with Canon. You're right about Sony keeping it simpler with one lens mount, but you can get Canon lenses for much cheaper. Simply put, the cheapest Sony vlogging setup would be the a6100 and their 10-18mm which is $1,550. With Canon you could get an M50 Mark II and their 11-22mm for $1000. I paid $750 total for my used SL2 and 10-18mm. Another thing is that most beginners don't have the right computers or data storage to handle 4K files, and they don't know how to color grade. Canon's 1080p is very sharp and the files are small and easy to edit. They have great color right out of camera and their autofocus is top notch. Their flip-out screens are fully touch capable and their menus are well laid out and easy to navigate. The money you save going with Canon you can use to buy other important things like tripods, lighting, and microphones.

I love Sony cameras but personally went with Panasonic. I bought an S1 and and S5. I was super worried about the AF, not so much for video but for photo but I find the AF is excellent (Sony isn't excellent, it's phenomenal) I honestly think bang for buck the S1 is the best camera professionals on a small budget can get, particularly filmmakers. But I've had the pleasure of using Canon and to a lesser extent Sony cams and honestly once you get behind each cam and get out of the details all are pretty damn amazing now.

Great to see some one discus the origins of Sony, The Minolta system ( A Mount System). Your reason is why I stay with Sony. I use both system to this day.

I switched from Nikon to Sony A7 (gen 1) years ago only because I have some really nice Leica lenses and for me I just can’t shoot film all the time, it’s too expensive . So I did some research and found that I can get the adapter to use those lenses with Sony camera without having to modify the lenses so yeah I went with Sony and now I’m shooting with A7Rii & A7ii and got some Sigma Art lenses & Sony lenses and still using those Leica lenses with my Sony til these days .

Great video (coming from a Canon guy). Side note: what’s up with all the scammy KZbin ads lately? Anyone else noticed that?

I used Nikon z bodies for 2 years with great success. Where they fell sort in my eyes when it came to motion and tracking someone. Yeah you can still get some good shots with them but you have to take a bunch to get a few. So after getting more postponements with preorders on newer Nikon z lenses and bodies. I decided to give Sony a try. I went with the a7riv in the beginning and the autofocus was phenomenal with the tracking. Wow it’s that much better. But I wanted to get into doing some sports and action shots so I picked up an a9 also. I took a big loss switching brands. But I already made that money back since the switch. But I am really happy with my choice. But I did second-guess myself when the new R5 came out by canon so I rented it and wow great camera and the 85mm f1.2 is a killer combo. But I liked the feel and lens options Sony has. But with I got now I feel I won’t need anything else for the next decade. Well maybe if Sony would come out with a 200mm f2 I would definitely grab that. Lol. Great video

Solid points. But after having issues with my Sony a6400 shutter only after a year of usage & missing Canons color science I'm going back to Canon.

I went from the Panasonic G9 to the a7iii. I would love to jump into an A9 or a7riii as a second cam eventually though. I really wanted to jump off into the Panasonic S5 but lens options were lacking. Also, like you said, that autofocus is WILD!

Hi. For me I wanted a smaller body for weddings and photography. I was Canon dslr user... Some years ago the only choice was Sony that had 2 SD card slots! It's very important for me and I couldn't understand why Canon doesn't had 2 SD slots 🤷♂️. The camera mounts was a plus and of course the variety of lenses. I shoot videos and photos so the only choice for me was the Sony a7 III because the price was right too. The auto focus was the same as Canons maybe one thing that Canon had then was lock af in video ok not so much of a problem.

And I saw that Sony came out with new models I tried to improve and work on a mirrorles body. Canon.... Said.. Mirrorles? Neeehhhhh we stick to dslr... Oookkk Canon 5d m4 is in weight 900 grams? Plus a sigma lens you are 1,8 kilos when you go to a shoot with 2 bodies!... This is a big difference
