Regarding the pay for a professor as you mentioned in the video: they do get paid more, but they have to be tenured ones. Whereas a high school English teacher can expect $45,000-$50,000 starting with benefits, an entry level professor would have to grind some years to have full time hours to earn higher figures ( about $80,000-$100,000). It’s hard work, but being able to teach students writing concepts, literature topics, or theoretical approaches utilizing ones own choice of books would feel more rewarding. It’s my passion to teach English at a college and hopefully that goal will be realized very soon.

I feel like there’s so many options for English majors, but I’m just not sure if employers would even like seeing an English major as an achievement because it might be seen as vague. Do you know if this could be true that it’s too vague?
@MeganReneeToday4 жыл бұрын
I've actually heard that employers tend to like seeing an english major because we tend to be good at thinking outside the box and seeing things differently than people who major in something that directly relates to a job. English majors are also taught to think critically and analyze what we see which is a very helpful skill in a job! Of course, english majors tend to also be better with words and communicating than other majors which is a great skill to have!

I’ve had my English BA for a year and haven’t been able to get a job (I’ve applied for jobs ranging from full-on careers down to ,minimum wage and haven’t made any money or been able to get a job. Unless you can move to a big city it’s hard to get a job as an English Major. I’m going back to school in spring of 2021 to get a single subject credential to teach high school English even though I don’t necessarily want to. I need to make money though, and it’s better than everything else around me. I hope you find something where you live. I can’t move so I’m stuck with no income and no opportunities until I get a credential, sadly.

Hey, Mica! Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It is so important to hear different perspectives on this subject. Good luck, I hope you are able to find a job soon!
@infamouscrusader33634 жыл бұрын
It's actually really broad because English is not a single subject and doesn't concentrate exactly to one field. Depending on the field, English majors and basically all other arts and humanities will get overlooked because in the end they are looking for the what you majored in because it brings credibility. It's nice to have soft skills but one thing to remember is that every major will teach you to be a better writer and communicator. On the other hand, there are jobs that don't care about you having a degree or not so you can start off by having some experience and basically go there.
@colesisler5823 жыл бұрын
You’re absolutely right about it being vague, amongst other things. At first it seems like wow, it gives you such a broad range of options when in reality it gives you an extremely narrow range of options (that are major related, at least) and those jobs are extremely hard to come by and are insanely competitive.

Hello there! Is it possible for me to do a master's degree in English literature and settle abroad. Because it's one of the degrees that I'm planning on doing after I finish my bachelor's degree. I'd love to get some input from your side!🙌
@MeganReneeToday3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I'm not really sure the answer to this. I would assume the answer is yes, but it's possible I'm wrong. It also depends on the career path you want to take and where exactly you'd like to settle abroad. Different places will have different needs and demands, but where you are physically doesn't always mean that's where the entirety of your work will take place. For example, you might start a company tutoring english students which could reach further than where you live. I would recommend looking into what you'd like to do with your degree and thinking about some places you'd like to settle and do some research into what the market is like for your industry there. Good luck!!

@@MeganReneeToday Thank you very much for your insightful advice. My objective is actually to get settled in the US,so can you suggest me some locations where I can thrive with my English Master's degree? I'd really appreciate it 🙌
@MeganReneeToday3 жыл бұрын
It still depends on what you're looking to do with your degree. I'm planning to go into the entertainment industry which means hotspots will include L.A., New York, Austin, and Atlanta. If you're interested in the education industry you might look into where schools that have good programs in what you'd like to teach are and follow that. If you want to get into marketing, I would maybe look more into cities where there might be more businesses and agencies to work at. The U.S. also has a lot of different types of places so I would decide what kind of place you want to live in. Do you prefer the city or a more rural place, or something in between? What kind of climate would you like to live in? Is having a full winter important to you? Or something you'd like to avoid?

@MeganReneeToday4 жыл бұрын
That's a great question! It all depends on what you want to do. If you want to be an english teacher, I would definitely include education in your track. There are a few options. Some schools offer tracked education majors so you can do an english education major and even minor in literature to get even more out of it. If not, you can figure out if you'd prefer to major in education and minor in literature, or vice versa. Another option is to double major in both! Good luck and thank you for watching!

And adding to that, what universities should I apply to if I want to have a good experience in the English department? I’m an Australian student and I’m struggling with the application process; how and where I should apply to in American or UK universities. I just wanted to get your opinion as to where to apply :))
@MeganReneeToday4 жыл бұрын
Hey, Cliche! Thanks for watching! If you'd like to teach english I would definitely recommend an english major with either a literature or language track and then a minor in education! As for which specific schools you want to apply to, I think it all depends on what you're looking for! I remember when I was getting ready to choose schools one thing that helped me was researching best schools for writers or english majors and then you can find which of those feels like a good fit for you! Another thing I recommend once you have a short list is to go on KZbin and try to find creators at the schools that stuck out to you and see what life is on that campus without someone trying to sell it to you. Good luck on your search and in your studies!
