I need someone to explain this to me honestly. I'm black and tbh, except cases where K-pop idols are seen mocking my culture in a way, I personally don't get pissed or feel bad in a case like Jay Park's. I also don't agree that it's cultural appropriation. I've checked the meaning of this so many times and all I've gotten is that appropriation means taking one's culture and passing it as yours. I don't see any of that here. Correct me if I'm wrong please. I totally understand his write up. They grew up with black music and culture and they even give credit to these back artists. Many idols have openly named black artists as their role models because that's what they grew up with. I feel it's weird that we're telling them now to completely dissociate themselves from a culture they grew up with. It's not like they're making fun of it or saying it's theirs. Is the point of us listening to kpop, watching kdramas and even wanting to visit Korea and other countries we love not to share and experience each other's cultures? Can we also say that black people who visit Korea and dress up in hanboks and traditional attires are appropriating culture? Is it not more important to focus on people who are actually racist than some of these idols who are just projecting what they grew up into?I'm honestly very curious and confused here.
@makerAr-qj3mk2 жыл бұрын
Girlll i agree with you ..i dont think that asians or artists mocking black culture is a bad thing i mean they are just trying to let us see how much they respect it and love it since they were growing listening to some of their songs i guess. Or wearing dreads or whatever idk but i think its just a style its not like the end of the world tho🌚
@AR1GAT02 жыл бұрын
I agree, growing up. We were taught that hip hop and poetry was what we had on the streets to connect with other creative minds. It was shared that hip hop was a culture where we could be ourselves, learn about each other and support one another when we had nothing. Now all of a sudden, nobody wants other race groups to listen to hip hop or become "influenced by hip hop" even though they grew up on black artists. Isn't it an amazing thing that black artists were so talented, they were able to reach and touch other race groups? I grew up on hip hop, I was raised in a predominant black community --- so you're telling me, even though I was raised in this, I am not allowed to accept or enjoy the music or culture? It's definitely the same for those that enjoy Asian food, culture, clothing, style, music. Cancelling people for this is absurd when you have no idea what community or culture they grew up with. Some people were even raised in black communities, and you're asking non-blacks to remove that from their life experiences. It's really sad to be that offended, and become the dividing force between people and communities.

@@AR1GAT0 I love my culture to the fullest but honestly, I would rather focus my energy on calling out actual racist people than canceling some idols somewhere who grew up with black culture and are not in any way mocking it but actually respect it. Some of these things are actually wrong like using the n word and they should apologize even if it's unknowingly but I feel like a lot of other things are just unnecessary for me. We want people to learn about our culture but when they do so and appreciate it, we cancel them. I can't dictate what others should feel but I'm not just feeling it tbh. As a black person and a fashion designer, I love other cultures and sometimes I get inspiration from them when I'm making some of my dresses. Take for example the Japanese "Kimono" that is so common. Many people don't even know it's a Japanese piece of clothing. Are we all appropriating their culture too? But we criticize these people if they do anything remotely black. Seems very double standardy to me.

School bullying should be dealt with by the schools and parents. Why bring it up years later once someone is famous. Ruining someone’s career is a form of bullying if the accusations turn out to be false and motivated by financial gain only.

You worded this very well my friend. I agree because all of this is a massive escalation. When one person happens to be an idol that bullies another, that other person takes it worst way possible. these childhood, middle school and high school accusations are getting tiring, right? Like it happened years ago, even if it's true, people change and learn from their mistakes. Obviously now, they have shown to become better people especially actors who would have behind the scenes footage shown of them being nice to co-stars. It's upsetting to all your favourite actors/idols being shamed for something that they did before they even knew they were going to become famous. They didn't predict their future and so if they did wrong in the past, they should apologise and move on, of course some bullying issues are not okay and I would also hate it if I was in the victims shoes. However, a lot of time, most of the accusations are false anyway and people just find any excuse to bring down idols from fame and success.
@ang12292 жыл бұрын
Some people have accusations against idols about their idols on purpose but that’s a different story. Do you know how misleading it is that your favorite idol did something absolutely horrible in their middle school days. im talking about things like school bullying.. etc. I’m not going to say that they aren’t able to reflect on their mistakes.. but there are many who have the same attitude but have a facade and only apologize because they were found out. simply behind the scenes footage of them “being nice to co-stars” doesn’t even portray their real image.

@@istoleyourlatte I've been the victim. And if I let the bullying of my past control my future, then I will never move on. So I've let it go. Yes, I still have some issues, I need the other person to say hi first before I do, to make sure they want to acknowledge me. But taking down the people who made me this way will not fix that. Getting an apology from them, will not fix it. That is something I need to learn and overcome on my own. And if I suddenly see them acting on the TV screen, again, good for them. Do I have an extra few hurdles to jump in life because of them? Yes. But if I am properly able to jump those hurdles, I will be stronger because of it.

I still don't get why hairstyles can only be possessed by people within a certain community. It's not like it holds any sacred meaning. This just shows that members of that community refuse to share one aspect of their culture, when cultures have been sharing things like language, religion, clothing, hairstyle, art, food, and all sorts of valued things with countries and cultures all over the world, since the dawn of time. Appropriated or appreciated, it doesn't matter. Cultures share, and when it comes to hairstyle, it is so baffling to me that someone who isn't black can't wear black hairstyles, but if you turn the tables and tell black people that they can't wear European or simply non-black hairstyles, then you're called out as a racist. I hate double standards, and I hate the victim complex people have. My religion is used as edgy aesthetics all the time in kpop, but I don't call people out to apologize or try to cancel them. I understand that the world doesn't revolve around me and my feelings, and yet sometimes it seems as though I'm the only one who knows this.

The world is diverse and has an abundance of cultures. It is impossible to understand all of them enough to know what would be considered offensive or disrespectful. The right thing to do in such situations is to listen when you’re being informed and apologise for the offence. People are rude and will use a genuine mistake to crucify you for reasons unrelated to the issue at hand. This is what sometimes happens in Jay Park’s case, at least what I’ve seen so far. He gets defensive because people become terribly mean and it gets hard to separate being educated or being persecuted. It’s not our jobs to “convince” people but to “educate” or “inform” is.

What ticks me off the most is that Jay Park's apologies are half-assed!! Like isn't he even a tad bit scared that messing with such BIG communities might END his career?? Mans never learns nor does he apologize like a decent human would 😒 P.S You got a new sub!!
