Hi Donna. I just want to thank you for posting this video series. The best on KZbin. I am at my 6 month mark following what sounds like similar surgery to yours. I had scapular dyskinesia issues too. Fortunately, at my 3 month check up, my surgeon expressed concern and I changed my physiotherapist. What an amazing difference that made. My range of motion is now not noticeably different from my other shoulder, but I can still feel the tightness. I am an active person (paddling, weight training, Scottish Country Dancing, skiing, swimming) and one of the hardest things has been not being able to do these activities. Fortunately I also do Tai Chi and have been able to keep this activity up since the 3 week mark. Tai Chi has helped with my progress immeasurably and have given me a standard by which I can measure my progress - from, initially not being able to lift my arm to now being able to do full moves. I started working out on a paddling ergometer 3 weeks ago and was back in the pool doing front crawl last week. Still doing therapy exercises (which take 1 1/2 hours) daily and am getting very tired of them. But I will perserviere because I want to come out of this better than I went in.

Hi Donna! I'm at 6 months post op for rotator cuff and bicep repair and I am almost exactly where you were at 6 months! I have that disconesis thing going on too. I cannot sleep on it and I'm still in PT. I can't reach behind my back yet and I'm experiencing horrible spasms in my bicep! My therapist says my spasms are because I'm still weak ! I have a lot of numbness and tingling going on! I'm somewhat discouraged because the whole process is taking so long to heal! Thank you so so much for your videos! You have no idea how much you have helped me during this process! Again thank you and may God richly bless you!❤️

Hi Teela, I know how easy it is to get frustrated, but in the big picture, 6 months is still really early. I really feel that it takes 12 to 18 months to fully recover. Keep doing your exercises. If your therapist feels something is not right then he/she should refer you back to your surgeon. I feel that the therapists see a lot more of what is "normal" because they are working with patients every day!

I am at 18 weeks and have the EXACT SAME!! I also felt the physical therapists did not pay enough attention. There are so many patients in PT when I'm there that they have to basically float around from patient to patient. And most of the time the PTs are mainly talking and joking amongst themselves instead of helping patients do things correctly. I also don't get the same PT (or even the one I was originally scheduled to have) every time -- always a different one that barely knows me. This is the hospital's PT department, so I am reluctant to complain about them. :( I feel like quitting PT at this point, but I know I can't because it's too important. Hope you are doing well, Donna. I've been following your videos each step of the way since my surgery! Thank you for these videos!!!

Not sure how they will "retrain" me at this point. My shoulder always hikes up. :(
@funmakingmoneyify

D. Cannaboom, it can be retrained but it will take work. I would complain to my doctor that no one is watching you well enough during PT and that you have some issues that need more attention. Ask to be referred somewhere else!

Hi donna, Thank you so much for these video's that you have posted. I had rotator cuff surgery on dec 29, 2016 and I just started physical therapy last week. I was pretty discouraged thinking am I ever going to get back to normal because I've been in so much pain and have had very sleepless nights lately but when I saw your video's it lifted me up. Thank you again for taking time to do this for the world to see. May God Bless You.

priscillamajors Hi Priscilla, I'm preparing to have the rotator cuff surgery next week and I was wondering if you have any advice for me? I'm so nervous because it's going to be on my dominant shoulder and I just don't feel prepared to go through this! Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi Teela, I'm sorry you are having to go through this surgery. I was pretty nervous myself before I went in and had it done but I promise it's going to be ok. The healing process is the hard part bc it takes alot of patience which is something I didn't have but I do now :). My advise to you is if you don't have a recliner get one... your going to need it bc at first it's very uncomfortable sleeping on the bed but some people they just use alot of pillows to put behind them and find a comfortable way, as for me I tried that nope didn't work for me but I already had a recliner. Some other advise is always "ice it" to keep the inflammation down and when you start physical therapy and they have you do exercises at home always heat it first before you do them it really helps. I know you will have days that your not going to feel like doing your exercises at home bc I felt that way at first but please do them even if your in pain. Last thing I would like to say is anytime anyone has surgery its never the same the way God has made us but the good news is He will not put to much on us that we can't handle. God has been my strength and He will be yours Teela. God bless you my friend and prayers going up for you. Hope this helps :) :)

I will be having MRI this week, my Dr. thinks after 5 weeks now that I totally tore the rotator cuff... I am praying if I do have to have this done it will be end of May and that by end of October I will be able to go on cruise with my kids that we planned a year ago... The anxiety is overwhelming right now for me.. I don't do well with pain and pain meds make me sick.

I'm at 6 months and your videos have really helped motivate and encourage me to work harder. I do wish I had known up front this was going to take a full year to recover from. My insurance only allowed 20 visits for therapy which is totally a hindrance. Stopping at 4 months with a therapist and has really slowed my progress. I was told it will be 18 months before I would be capable of throwing a football any distance.Yippee I might be allowed to throw overhanded at a year.... which I am looking forward to. BTW you seem to have better flexibility and strength so it is motivated me to work harder. Thank you for taking time to make these videos!

@funmakingmoneyify 5 жыл бұрын
JL, you can fight your insurance company with the help of the PT office or your doctor to say that you need more time in physical therapy. If you have no luck then just make sure you are doing daily exercises at home to strengthen and increase flexibility. I was religious with that!

I'm 6 months post of labrum repair. Same thing. My PT and surgeon keep reminding me that it will get better and once range had neared 100% the strengthening will allow for better use of the shoulder in the range. I do these arm hang and doorway stretches about every 2-3 hours that really irritate the soft tissues, but once they calm down I am much less pain than before due to less stiffness. Plus these stretch exercises continues to increase my range daily. I am noticing that the 6 months mark is the limbo stage where you can use the arms, but still get pain, stiffness. It's a psychological battle thinking you're farther along than you really are. I wish surgeons and therapists would better educate about this. It's really defeating.

This has been so enlightening! I was making such good progress in PT that they said they really weren’t doing me any good and recommended I continue on my own based on my Dr’s concurrence. Well, at six months I too feel I was abandoned and now I have more pain than I did at four months. I’ve continued my exercises with dumb bells added for strength enhancement. I will continue but my daughter who lives states away but is an ortho, thinks my issue is arthritis not ligament or muscle. I will make an appointment and see what my doctor says. My daughter thinks Novocaine and or cortisone may be in order. At seventy five I now think I should have looked into other approaches. Thanks for your honesty.

Hi Donna. Thank you so much for all of your videos. They have been invaluable to my healing process, as whenever I’m frustrated with the process, I check to see where you were at this point in your recovery and we’ve had so much in common the whole way through, it makes me feel better. I’m 6.5 months post surgery. My PT also left. I’ve been with the assistant for the last 3 months and have only seen my new PT once in that time. I have adhesive capsulitis now. Saw my surgeon’s PA today, going to start with a new PT place. He said I “drew the short end of the stick” and still have a ways to go with PT. I had PT 6 months pre-surgery so I’m really over it at this point! Thank you for your encouragement.

Diane, thank you for these video blogs. They have been a Godsend for my Rotator Cuff, Bicep Tenodesis, & Labrum Tear Surgery and recovery. I am at my six month anniversary. I’ve been released from Doctor’s care as the ultra sound showed that I’m completely healed. I finished a grueling 4 month physical therapy a two weeks ago. At this point I’m experiencing the same limitations you did. Especially with my shoulder raising up. I continue to do my exercises daily and am very persistent to recover to a close to 100% as I can. I’d be happy with 90%.I look forward to viewing the 8 month video. You have been an inspiration, once again thank you for posting.

Hi Donna, I'm just past my 6 month mark. I appreciate your videos, just to compare my progress. Started sleeping in my bed about 2 weeks ago. And with lock-down for Covid 19, I've skipped so many weeks of physical therapy. So I think for me, there will be more PT in the months to come. Thanks again for your videos.

You are the first person I've found to tell us what it was like for you during recovery. Thank you! My constant concern is that I am going to do something wrong to cause the tendons to rip away from screws and have to re-do this surgery. I have a horse ranch and am quite physical. I can't help but clean the barn, put on/off horse blankets, lunge horses (with good arm) and do regular chores with livestock . I walk about 6 miles a day. Can't ride until May. I tend to do things that don't hurt at the time but later that day my bicept hurts more. My range of motion is about the same as yours at 16 weeks, which I will be at soon. Haven't been in physical therapy for almost 2 months because of co-vid 19 but exercise at home. Have you heard about the necessity for a second surgery and why that happens? Thank you!

Alyce West, sometime if the shoulder becomes “frozen” they will go back in to manipulate. I know what you mean about always worrying that you’re going to tear something but just don’t do more, or lift more than what was recommended to you. If it doesn’t hurt while you’re doing something but then hurts after words, it means you did too much! You sound like a very “can-do” kind of person and it’s hard to hold you back, but be careful!

I have way more pain now than several weeks ago but am hoping that this is because I am rehabbing in a totally different way. I too cannot sleep. Hi, Donna! Do you remember me? ;-) I fell 1 mth after my surgery & broke the wrist on the same arm. You do such a great job with your videos. Anyway, my wrist healed in 8 wks, but I feel the same as you right now from the PT & my progress. This is my second time on the same shoulder (6 yrs apart). The first time, I was good to go at three months! No kidding! The doc said it would take longer this second time, but I still hurt and can't quite get my arm all the way up. I don't sleep on that side or like you, I hurt more the next day. I am sick of PT, too!!! I do keep at it so I don't regress. I just found out that I need a knee replacements! OH NO! MORE PAIN & PT WHEN THIS IS DONE!!!! LOL!!LOL!! Keep smiling $ have a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!! I realize you are further along now. Hope you are in good shape!!

Donna! We can tell that you are seriously bummed out. Very understandable. This process is so depressing. You look like you are at the end of your rope. A big change for a few months ago when you were so positive in your outlook. My wife is still suffering, remember she is one month behind you, and is likely due for a followup MRI in order to determine if the surgery actually worked. Whew, God help us if they have to start all over again. That shoulder lift issue you have is bad but not as unusual as some may think. My wife has it too. Let's all hang in there and try to stay positive.

Donna, I'm so sorry your still having pain. After my rotator cuff repair , I too did not recover from pain or complete rom.. about a year after the first surgery an MRI with contrast was done . A slap tear was found.. so another surgery was done to fix the slap tear.. essentially the bicep tendon was relocated into the bone, allowing the tear to heal.. so make sure that is researched.. I still have discomfort sleeping on that side, but with the tear on the right now, I really have no choice , since I am a side sleeper. FYI, I also tried the laser therapy, but it did nothing for my pain or inflammation. Since the slap tear repair, I have full rom with no pain.. good luck, keep us posted on your recovery, it really does help!

Great video. Thank you. 4 1/2 months I strained my shoulder lifting and have been worried. I’ll rest it for a week, but then play with grandkids or just work around the house and backpedal on recovery. I was up to 5 pounds, lifting in all directions, but now I’m just lifting my arm for fear of making it worse. A little bit of sharp pain at the top of a lift. My six month check up is April 4th, 2023 hopefully I didn’t re-tear.

Hi I'm Karen, age 63, fairly active, played a lot of water volleyball which I am sure did not help this shoulder but actually tore my tendon after being handed a heavy box of Christmas ornaments down from the attic on Nov. 26 - instant pain and reduced range of motion; tried cortisone shot with Marcaine Dec. 5 instant relief but after 2 weeks pain and muscle spasms returned big time; MRI Dec. 15, full thickness tear of supraspinatus tendon - bad news earliest surgery date is Feb.16! Lots of swelling in neck and deltoid, muscles spasms (everywhere including back of scapula, biceps, deltoid, forearm and palm. I am allergic to all opiates so pain control is an issue. I am using Young Living oils, ice and OTC NSAIDS like Advil or Aleve with little effect. Terrified of surgery (it will be my 4th in one year - had meniscus repair right knee, gall bladder and appendix removed this year). I ruptured my Achilles tendon back in 2008 and that was the most painful miserable surgery or time in my life I can remember. I was in and out of casts and totally non weight bearing for 3 months, rehab very painful but am walking well now although I will never be able to run again or ski. Feeling very depressed. I remember the pain and isolation from the Achilles surgery all too well and worry about this surgery. Donna you have been an inspiration for what is coming up, I am looking for an ice machine on ebay and will follow your advice. I have been practicing being one handed. Fortunately for me it is my left shoulder and I am right handed since I will be home alone a lot following the surgery as my spouse works weekdays. Glad I found this site watching your progress will help encourage me through mine. Thank you for sharing so much

Karen, I am so sorry to hear this! You have had a string of bad luck in 2016 and I hope your should surgery is the only surgery you will need in 2017! I would think the Achilles surgery would have left you more isolated since not being able to walk would have been more more isolating - at least you will have both your feet and the use of your dominant arm. Keep me posted on your progress and I will keep you in my prayers.

Donna, thanks for sharing. I see my surgeon in another two weeks to find out if and hopefully when, he will fix my superspinatus and bicep tendons. I have kept myself very fit and hope I am an acceptable candidate for this surgery despite being in my 64th year. I fell on ice last April and just now finally getting my interview with the surgeon. I'm optimistic my break even point will be in 4 to 6 months with full recovery in a year. I'm a part time fitness instructor now and hope to do that full time when I retire in next few years. I try to keep optimistic but wish the process was faster here in Canada.
@funmakingmoneyify
@funmakingmoneyify 8 жыл бұрын
Ed, I am sure you will be a candidate! I fell as well and usually a fall causes the surgeon to repair faster than when it's just degenerative. I fell in September and didn't have surgery until April because I went through 4 months of PT until an MRI was even ordered. I never thought that I was going to need surgery! I felt like I was in great shape and strong for the surgery. I'd like to think that helps but being immobilized for 6 weeks and surgically changing the anatomy of the shoulder somewhat, really changes healing and everyone is so, so different in their outcome and healing process. I think that expecting it to take a year is the best way to not be disappointed. With you being a fitness instructor, I have no doubt you will do everything to increase your chances of a faster outcome. Good luck and keep me posted!

Donna Westermeier Got my surgery date of 2016 dec 05. Surgeon said my bicep condition was probably preexisting, and since it didn't bother me and greatly adds to the surgery, I decided to leave it alone. So my operation will be to reconnect my supraspinatus and my subscarpularus will be repaired. Other cleanup may be required and will be determined during the exploratory first phase of my operation. To be off work 6 weeks and may reach break even in 4 to 6 months with full recovery in 10 to 12 months. Got my ice machine and an enhanced sling ordered. Not really looking forward to operation, but do want to get my life back.

Donna Westermeier Thanks for your encouragement. Had my surgery last Monday. Operation Reported as full success. Started my at home pt as prescribed by my surgeon. My regular pt starts this Tuesday. Wearing my cryo/cuff and pillow sling all the time except for bathing and pt. Cooling 20 min each hour now. Pain manageable, except for when I move my arm suddenly by pure reflex. Then it really hurts and I wonder how much of that I can do before I undo my operation. Going a bit stir crazy, and I know I need to limit my activities, especially sudden reflex moves. See my surgeon again on dec 21st.

I had my left shoulder done 4 yrs ago.. rotator cuff.. then a year later a slap tear was found when my pain had not gotten better after the RC surgery.. I have now torn my right RC.. scheduled for surgery early 2017.. I have enjoyed your video, as they have reminded me that I will need at least 3 months off work.. ( I was trying to tell myself I could get back to work in 4 weeks!! Haha!) I too have to have both arms when working.. I just wanted to say, I had the same rom issues, and I found doing the pt exercises at home along with some upper body yoga moves helped me to regain my strength.. I have had to come to grips that I will never be super strong again. ( I have always had strong arms) I too, had to have open incisions both times, and also have the indentions.. that's just what happens when tissue is cut, so hang in there! I'm still trying to get my upper body strength and muscle definition back, but now delayed because of the right tear!! I never did the ice, but may try it this time. Thanks for your upbeat attitude and honesty.. love all the recommendations. Good luck! Sandy in az.

I am in my 9th month now and am going back to the doctor to see if there's anything else I can do to decrease pain and increase range, or find a reason why I am not doing better than I am. It's not bad but it could be better! Good luck to you!

Hi Donna. Glad to see you are still updating. Never planned on watching a “6 Month Recovery” KZbin video, 5 months ago ! ;-) I mistakenly thought that when I started this in March that I would be almost fully recovered by this point (I am ~3 weeks behind you). To be fair, my surgeon said “expect a year” with no guarantee it would ever be a complete recovery. My mindset was, and still is, to beat that. I am learning, like you, this is a long road - and there is more work ahead. Lots, it seems. Progress now, is sooo incremental, if noticeable at all! Btw, my scapula, it is the primary thing on my mind when I do my exercises. Your range looks good to me, but yes, there are ways of using the other muscle groups that do not assist in recovery. Very typical as Dante points out. I hope that is only a minor setback for you. I will look for your next update and improvement, even if it is only small steps.

Wow Tom, I'm glad I didn't have your doctor LOL. The funny little thing I noticed was the range exercise where you would to reach across your chest and over your other shoulder like you were trying to scratch your back. That and reaching back for rear belt loops were the toughest. Gradually I started noticing while watching TV I was reached further and further over my right shoulder until one day I noticed I had the same range in my left arm as I did in my right. Progress slips up on you so gradually that one day you go hummmm

Thank you Robyn! As you know there are good days and bad days but at least we are moving in the right direction no matter how slow it seems! I am working right now on trying to get the ball of the shoulder to slide better in the socket, I guess it's a little stuck... the physical therapist used the term "frozen" once but I think is very careful about categorizing my condition as such. I just keep plugging away with going to therapy twice a week and daily at home. It is a part time job!

I am prepping for RC surgery now and your videos are a big help. I’m watching the 6 mos update. I do have a couple of questions - when we’re you able to get off the opioids? and was your surgery on your dominant hand? - I’m thinking about protecting myself from getting tennis elbow.
@funmakingmoneyify
@funmakingmoneyify 2 жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly, I only took opioids for the first three days consistently, and then backed them off to only at night time when I was going to sleep, and that was probably only for another week if that. The combination of Tylenol and Motrin really did the trick so I didn’t need to rely on opioids.

I really appreciate all of your posts because I’m often concerned about my progress and the extent of my injury/surgery/rehab. I pray for your full recovery! I’m at week 13 post-op and 11th weekly PT visit for major tears in the Supraspinatus and Infraspinatus plus bicep reattachment and some clean-up. My PT caught my scapular and posture issues right away. Yours should have too!! Now every exercise I’m careful to keep the shoulder blades back and down. Plus just walking around. After last Wednesday’s PT I was upset I hadn’t been given new exercises and felt like I had failed somehow but after reading all of the posts I realized I’m substantially ahead in my progress. I can touch my opposite back shoulder blade, raise my arm to 163 degrees (have to watch the shoulder hiking!!) and can adduct overhead completely. I’ve maintained a workout routine with a sling/pillow of spinning, fast walking, some run/walking and ab exercises. I’m looking to start a modified yoga routine in a few weeks-only with the PT’s blessing of course. So far I can say I only slowed down the first few weeks and then modified my routine.

Don't get discouraged. I has rotator cuff surgery around 3 years ago now. At the time, we didn't know I was going into type 1 diabetes which is rare for a 57 year old. All the steroids sent my blood sugar through the roof but I still didn't know what was going on until I lost 40 pounds. The diabetes caused "frozen" shoulder which no amount of therapy helped. My doctor told me that more therapy would just be more pain with little gain and that time was the only cure. I was depressed but he was just about spot on. He said it would take 18 to 24 months for this to return to normal and almost without notice, gradually around 16 mos, my range started getting better and at 22 mos, I was almost 100%. It was a long painful ordeal but I would do it again to get my arm to where it is now

Hi Donna thank you so much as after watching I believe I too have Scapula Disconesis after my Subacromial Decompression and Rotator Cuff repair surgery and my previous Physio mentioned my Scapula not being seated correctly and sadly he left and my current physio has put this down to my tendon and muscles currently having no strength so said my shoulder is compensating for this so may ask him for a second opinion as it sounds exactly like what my shoulder does and I also have to move my shoulder blade back down which isn't great! I am 15 weeks post op and still surprised how this op impacted on every aspect of my life! Thank you again for posting these have really helped and hope you are doing ok! Best wishes from the UK xxx

Shouldn't that have been the other way around? 2) ROM is 3-5 degrees better from the 5mo mark, but my arm is "listening" to my brain better regarding the forehand stroke in tennis. 3) Stay tuned (looking for fame!). Having surgery on Dec 1, 2016. Your videos have been most helpful. I have 3 questions.. Did you go to the Chiro prior to surgery? How many times a week do you go for therapy? Last one...when were you able to wear a bra again?
@funmakingmoneyify
@funmakingmoneyify 8 жыл бұрын
Liana, Yes, I did go to the Chiropractor before my surgery. I try to go once a week if not every two weeks just for maintenance and well being. I have gone to PT twice a week from the beginning and still continue to go twice a week even in my 8th month! I could have worn a bra at 6 weeks but chose not to until 8 weeks. I was able to get by with half camisoles no problem, especially because it was winter. Wearing dark colored tops also helps! I am sure other women have worn bras much sooner than I.

Thank you!! I know it's a person ??? I really appreciate your response. I can't wear a real bra now, because of the pressure it puts on my shoulder. I use strapless, but they hurt too. Liana, You are going to have you work cut out for you! I couldn't drive for 6 weeks but maybe your surgery will be different and you can drive sooner. I know people who drove anyway but if you get in an accident and you have an order not to drive then the insurance company won't cover the accident. Also, many people just choose after a certain time to stop traditional PT and just do it at home. My advice to you is to let people help you! Don't try to be a hero and do it all, let people drive your kids to their sports activities and bring meals over or shop for you! Let me know if I can answer anything else for you.

I am still going to PT twice a week and still have some pain when raising arm all the way up. But, this does not prevent me from doing anything. I would be thrilled if I were completing pain free and I feel it most when I am sleeping. It is bearable and is more like a dull ache when sleeping for a couple of hours.
