It took a lot of time, trials, and tribulations to get this setup working properly. I do think that it will be reliable now, but I just wanted to cover some of the common problems that are encountered when doing a DC and flat-mount conversion to a Starlink dish, as I seemed to encounter all of them.
Thank you to those who support this channel and my journey!

One more thing of note is that I recently had to replace my router to get WiFi calling working. As far as I can tell the GL.iNet Opal (GL-SFT1200) is simply not compatible with T-Mobile WiFi calling, but the GL.iNet Slate AX (GL-AXT1800) works out of the box (the Beryl routers may work also, but I can't say for sure). The reason it took me so long to figure this out is that T-Mobile told me that WiFi calling simply would not work on Starlink. It wasn't until I was using someone else's unmodified Starlink that I discovered WiFi calling is possible and works totally fine.

I feel like people don't make videos like these enough. Lots of people show how they did a thing, very few show how it worked out. I really appreciate it. Glad to hear you've worked out most of the kinks.

This is why I say no to product reviews. I don't really know if I like something until I have used it for a while.

I recently flat mounted my Dishy using a Starmount but kept the 110v Starlink router. This video has helped me decide not to try to do a 12V system. I don’t think the small power savings is worth the unreliability.

That's why I like to keep a printed book at hand, the hardware has been reliable since around 868 A.D. during the Tang Dynasty.

As with a lot of complicated projects that are not copies from others it takes awhile to debug the problems. You have done a great job getting all the parts put together and then getting it all to work. As with your videos great job!!💡😁

I'm curious how you determined that it was noise causing the problem? I don't currently have an oscilloscope and don't have a lot of experience trying to measure noise. I'm in the process of figuring out how to make my Starlink easier to deploy and was looking at PoE injectors, etc. I want to have Starlink in my car and my RV. RV has a 48v LiFePO4 battery, so I can connect that straight to a PoE injector. My car does have an inverter, but I was hoping to avoid the large official router. I see various models of unbranded DC/DC converters on Amazon. I have assumed that they are all the same from the same factory, but I'm not sure.

I wonder if that's the 1kz engine, which is also in a bunch of 90s 4runners. Have a look on the forums to see how they keep on top of over heating issues :)

You should try living in Germany :D Just couple years ago we were enjoying 0.5Mbps on average from Vodafone in our property. And we been paying more than 40 Euros/month. Still on 2Mbps with local internet provider.

The best dc hack is de-solder the poe chip off the board which bypasses the need for any type of poe injector or dcdc converter..just need 1 extra solder which if you research it its from a Ukrainian guy..once done all is needed is a dc wifi router.

Hey Max, love your channel, cause I'm a sucker for JDM rigs!😁 I am planning on full-timing the US and Canada. Currently, I am in Germany and using a mobil contract which has a cancellation period of just a day! 80Mbps for around 33$/month. Also I have 2 other SIM-Cards, in case I don't get a good connection or I'm roaming in Switzerland. This really turned out to be a cheap and reliable way for me. You think something similar would be possible with T- Mobile and AT&T in th US or is Starlink the way to go?
@dustyodyssey

I think it depends where you go. Often the only time I have cell data is when I am in town, and when I am in town, I am busy with resupplying, etc. Other areas have great coverage. You don’t need starlink. I traveled for months without it. But especially in the West coverage is a lot less consistent than what you have in Europe. Also I do have a tmobile plan and often times it is absurdly slow due to network congestion.

Thx a lot Max! I wasn't aware of this. Now, I am seriously considering Starlink as well and your videos on doing the conversion are a big help as well!👍

Have You considered Rain-xing the starlink and the solar panels? Should make them easier to clean and rain water would slide right off the starlink.
@dustyodyssey
@dustyodyssey 7 ай бұрын
The starlink dish comes with a hydrophobic coating that actually works pretty well. Rain-x on the solar panels is an interesting idea though...

Do you think someone could work remote with starlink with regular zoom meetings during a 40 hour work week?
@dustyodyssey
@dustyodyssey 7 ай бұрын
I think the best solution is a combination of wireless hotspot and starlink. It's not always easy to find a clear view of the sky and, on the other hand, cell networks can be congested or non-existent. But the main reason I say both is power. If you have starlink turned on for 12 hours for work and maybe a little netflix/youtube after work that's ~40Ah a day just for internet (60Ah+ if you're using an inverter), not to mention the power use of your PC, monitors etc. That starts to add up really fast, so I still use both.

Does Starlink disable modified antennas? I flat mounted mine and after one week of decent/good Internet the starlink can't even connect to the network. It looks to me they prefer that we pay extra for a flat antenna.
@dustyodyssey

As far as I can tell, Starlink does not disable hardware. If you are having issues the "Starlink Hacks" facebook group is a good place to start. Common issues are bad cabling/shielding, dirty power from cheap POE injectors, and de tuning the antenna/GPS by mounting it too close to metal in some way.

Very interesting. I had the same experience with my 12V conversion regarding the 12V to 48V up converter. I tried two of them and neither worked at better than ~1mbps with the Gl.iNet router because the that router could not downgrade link speed form 1Gbps to 100 Mbps. With an older router with only 100 Mbps ports it worked fine. I also switched to the Meanwell power supply with good results. Regarding shielded connectors, my system works fine with unshielded RJ45 connectors but I have shortened my total PoE injector to dishy cable to about 15' so maybe that helps. I have had issues with Wifi calling with Visible (essentially Verizon) but that can be circumvented by putting the phone into airplane mode and then turning on wifi. But the GL.iNet router pretty much sucks anyway.
@dustyodyssey
@dustyodyssey 5 ай бұрын
That's interesting, you are making me think that switching to a different router might have resolved all of these issues for me... For what it's worth, once I fixed my shielded connectors the router no longer needed to downgrade link speed to 100Mb It was happy at 1Gb

you knowwww - when i first saw your video about "no inverter for me, i'll just run all these little "adjust the voltage" converters - well, i thought, THAT'S GENIUS i'm gonna do that !! And now with these weeeeeird electrical issues you have I'm wondering if your van is just kinda magnetic wave hell :) I mean prooobably the problem is you just have a LOT of electronics in there. Especially audio. But all those voltage converters do it by windings of wire, right? I'd think that'd set off some interference chaos. What to do about it? Well i have no idea, of course. But I may veer towards a single inverter and not leavin everything known to man continually plugged in heheh. I wish you good luck, sir. ...........ohhh you do got an inverters now ....nevermind :)

I think you are absolutely right. I more or less have all the "noise" issues resolved for now, but there is admittedly still some weirdness with the system 😅
