6 Month Update Owning The New Manual Transmission MK5 Toyota Supra!

👋 After 6 months owning the new 2023 Toyota Supra with the manual tranmission, what are my thoughts? In this video I go over a 6 month review with the new Supra and talk about what It's been like to own, what I've done with it, and the plans for the manual Supra! This 2023 Supra is actually my second MK5 Supra. I bought a 2020 years ago and owned that for 2 years and 10k miles. This new Supra of mine is no daily driver. I've only put on about 1,200 miles in 6 months. This car really is a KZbin car. All the drive I do in it, generally is from filming videos of the upgrades I do to the car. However I've really enjoyed driving the car and filming tons of videos with all the upgrades. As expected the Supra has been perfectly reliable and I even had Toyota do the first oil change at 1k miles at no cost. The Supra really is a fantastic sportscar with so much to offer and the manual transmission makes this car feel very special. The Supra is not one I'll just sell out of the blue. I only plan to sell my 2023 manual Supra when I just need a more practical car. When that time comes I plan to buy a new BMW M2 with a manual and carbon bucket seats to replace the Supra. It will be cool retaining the manual and upgrading to the new S58 motor and have the back seats. However if a new Supra comes out with the S58 engine, I will definitely buy that car! The Nissan Z was a car I planned to buy, but bought the manual Supra instead since it's much better for not much more money. So if the Nismo Z comes in a manual I'd like to buy it and have it alongside the Supra, but I don't see selling the Supra to buy the Z Nismo. So time will tell, but those are the thoughts on future plans for the Supra. This car has been fun to drive and is definitely a toy for me and I love filming videos on it and from my experience owning my last Supra as more of a commuter car, these cars can do it all!

This video was filmed before the official release of the 2024 Nissan Z Nismo. Unfortunately the new 2024 Nismo Z is only available in an automatic. So that isn't a car I could see selling my manual MK5 Supra for. I would love to check out the 2024 Z Nismo to see the handling improvements and the new Recaro seats. They re-tuned the 9 speed auto to make it shift much quicker. So I would really like to see if they made the transmission feel as snappy as the ZF 8 speed in an automatic Supra. And maybe the handling is now on par with a Supra 3.0. So it'd be fun driving a new Nismo Z but the lack of a manual transmission in the 2024 Nismo Z kills it for me. That kind of car craves rowing through the gears of an old school manual transmission. So the new 2024 Nismo Z just makes the manual Supra even more of a desirable car! No regrets at all buying the manual MK5 Toyota Supra and canceling my original Nissan Z Performance order. Good thing I didn't pass on the opportunity to buy my manual Supra at MSRP to wait for the 2024 Nismo Nissan Z! The new 2024 Nismo Z does look very good inside and out, and I really hope the performance can match or surpass a Supra now, so hopefully I can at least drive one for a fun review video. Excited to see if Toyota comes out with a high performance Supra. If so, I'll buy it!

Awesome! I had Toyota do the first oil change. And they'll be doing the service on the car since it came with 4 complimentary oil changes. Since I technically already paid for them, they can change it lol. Its pretty easy to do tho. JB4 doesn't seem like a good part for the manual Supras. So I'm not going to do one of those

As of now no. If something did go wrong with the car they would have to prove that the modifications caused whatever issue pops up. Tuning is the only place where they can void your warranty since it's easy to blame the tune for damage.

The nismo Z was just announced. A lot of new performance features. It looks awesome but the only bad thing about it is there’s no manual option. What are your thoughts and opinions on it? Would you consider getting one because I know in your other previous videos you’ve talked about it before

I updated the description of this video with some thoughts. Filmed this video a few weeks ago. But yeah no manual kills it for me. And the car weighs 3700 pounds vs the Supra at 3,300 pounds. I love the Nismo seats and the style. But I’ll have to drive one to see if it can actually handle as nimble as the Supra. And if the tuning on the 9 speed shifts as fast as the ZF 8 speed. If it matches an Auto Supra in performance, it’d be cool. But these need manuals to come alive for me

lol yeah it's been a great car! Best bet is to talk with dealers and get one ordered. Flow Toyota shouldn't mark things up. But not sure if you're in NC or not. There are dealers out there! But it'll be a search!

I believe this is as good as a manual car can be, I've owned many manual cars(EVO, STI, Veloster N, Golf R) and this is by far the best one. There are 718 GTS/GT4 with horrible gear ratio and similar performance and I don't like new m2 look, and that's pretty much it. To me the only real better manual car than this is last gen m2 cs. Love your videos!

Yeah the Cayman GTS is very similar to the Supra in performance, but it costs $95k! M2 definitely isn't for everyone, I actually love the looks lol. And it drives amazing! But the Supra is such a unique drivers car and is just so perfectly balanced and fun!

S2000 has a better feeling shift action with tighter throws, but, yeah, that transmission isn't going to hold anywhere near the same amount of torque.

@@justsomerandomguyman S2K does have a great transmission feel. But honestly I think the Supra feels better. Feels a bit more beefy and solid going into each gear. S2K is very direct and has a short throw but it feels lighter going into the gear

Honestly they’re not overpriced. A 95 TT was 50k which is 90k today. These are a deal. I’m also one of those mustang owners outing a deposit down today, I feel called out 😂 I’ve had my cobra since 05’, it’s time for something new.

60k is not just a "little more than the Z" lol. People gotta stop saying that. I got mine for 52 msrp. I get markups are stupid and I may have gotten lucky but 8k is not just a little difference.

What was your out the door price? The Z Performance I was going to buy had a $53k MSRP. It would have been about $55k out the door. My Supra was $59k MSRP and it was $61k out the door. So the comparable Z to my Supra would have been $6k less. To me it was well worth paying an extra $6k for better handling, better power, better seats, better tech, nicer refinements and a better manual transmission. If the Z would have been $50k out the door, I would have bought it. But $6k just wasn't enough of a gap to forgo all the benefits the Supra had over the Z. Still a good amount of money. But in the big picture it didn't make a difference. I still would have put $15k down and made a $1k payment each month. Each car would have had a $700-$800 car payment. So me over paying either car at $1k made it to where the only difference I would have seen is a tad larger loan to my name. Which only would amount to maybe $250 more worth of interest. And since in todays market each car is old holding value. It didn't make a difference financially buying the Supra. I'm spending the same money regardless of the car I bought. And I get all the benefits of a Supra.

@@BrosFOURRSpeed similar experience/reasoning for me. I was on waitlist for Z performance for about 1 year, and ended up canceling and waiting for a manual Supra instead. Also, subjectively, whether or not the $7k difference is significant to my wallet, I also just love the sound of inline 6 so much more than v6. $53k felt like too much for a 2nd car if I’m not 100% excited for it. Nonetheless, awesome to see new manual Zs and Supras on the market in 2023

Very good point! That was my thing too. If I'm about to spend $55k on a sportscar that is purely a toy. I want it to be amazing in every category. The Supra just had it all. I just wish the Z was less expensive to make more sense to be a good lower cost alternative. Over $50k is a lot for a car, and it needed to have more. Nismo should be a great match to the Supra, but I'm afraid it might cost more then a Supra lol

I'm an manual guy. However i drove what i think was a stock auto 21 with a intake. I feel in love it. It felt like a go kart on rails. My only fear is that when I do get one. They will announce a bigger turbo one or s58 one from the factory.

Oh the auto is great in these! I love my 2020 for 2 years. Then got bored with the auto. But the Supra handling is fantastic! If they make a Supra S58. I’ll definitely buy one! Would be epic

@@BrosFOURRSpeed My guess is they'll have another collectors edition at the end of the cycle and scrap the Supra name for good. Toyota cheeped out on making the Supra from the get-go, I'm pretty sure they won't be making any Supra GRMN, especially in the middle of a partnership with another company. On the upside B58 is capable of making the same power as the S58. It wouldn't make much sense unless you're going stock to stock for an upgrade, because if they do decide to debut the car, the MSRP will sit above 80K which is already BMW M division price point.

I'll be going for the new M2. N55 is older then the B58, so that'd feel like a downgrade of an engine in an older car. The S58 in the new M2 is a beast and can push 700 HP so easy. That with the manual will be the perfect next car ;)

If any 5.0 or 5.4L Mustang owner said, "no regrets" to buying a +$50k Supra, they have no idea how to drive. There's a big difference in butt dyno, aka insta-torque that the stock Coyote and it's spinoffs can delivery that the B58 simply cannot do in its stock form. If you're in the ~$45-60k market, a manual Mustang is still the best bang for your buck. If you're below that price point, there's the Subaru BRZ/ToyotaGR86. The Supra MkV should be for someone who wants the mystique of "owning a Supra" without having the money and time to find, buy, and build a 2JZ Surpa. The Mustang has parts galore if you're in North America, and is relatively cheap to maintain. It doesn't need any mods to absolutely scare the crap out of 95% of the people who drive it, and is the quickest car at its price point, with the most potential if you're willing to spend the money. It gives you the option of building a full blown drag car, to a grid racer, or drift car, in one engine/platform combo. The weakest link of the Mustang has been the transmission, but that doesn't become a serious issue until you start pushing past ~550-600hp.

The new 2024 Mustang GT is a great car for sure. And equally optioned costs about the same as my Supra. However the Supra is faster around a track and nearly identical in a straight line. Plus the Supra can be tuned very easy and make way more power and stomp a Mustang even more. Mustang cant take the twisty turns like this. But the new S650 is a great car for a much different type of driving. Both are good at $60k, but one is a European refined good handling car. The other is a modern muscle car. Very different. Supra can make 700 HP with the automatic transmission still holding up. Manual cars clutch needs replacing to get to 600 HP.

Awesome video. I went from a MK5 Auto > A91-MT and got a ridiculous offer for a 23 ZL1 M6…sold the soup :( Agree with you on for the money the Supra cannot be beat. The ZL1 is my first supercharged engine and after experiencing both after break in I like the fun factor in the Supra better, the ZL1 is menacing and angry…it’s scary fast, nothing bad about it. Truly awesome car BUT I feel I’ll always go back to a Supra. Will probably hold onto the ZL1 till the last year of the 5th gen and end up back in another Manual Supra. I wouldn’t sell it ever, unless it for another Supra or a 911 turbo lol

Completely agree with pretty much everything you said. It's an all around great car. If I had to nitpick, I would say I wish they kept the double wishbone suspension design of the original Supra (not because the original handles better, it doesn't, but it's a better design), and I wish the car had a real manual handbrake instead of only the electronic handbrake. Those are pretty much my only gripes with the car. Well, those and the locked Bosche ECU. But, the car looks good, it's fast, it's easy to drive, it's comfortable, it has quick turn in and feels sharp. It's just an all around great sports car.

I have to say, thanks to you I was swayed away from the Z and I’m kinda happy about it. I sat in one and I felt like I was in a cheap car trying its best to prove its worth. I do wish Supra would’ve updated interior a tad but overall it’s nice. What has your mpg been like with the manual overall with fun driving and “normal” driving? @@DarthChiropractus Yeah I'm constantly in the press cars filming other cars and driving to events. I do drive the Supra as much as possible but with how my job works, its pretty much to film it or drive to a dealer to film one of their cars. Supra is definitely a nicer car for sure then the Z. I get about 25mpg. Good combination of highway cruising and ripping on the car. Eventually I will trade it for the M2. I like the look lol. But love the Supra for sure now!

@@jz7551 Everything. Toyota looked at every part of BMW and when they built this car, they verified everything would meet their reliability standards. And if it didn't, they fixed it. Thats why BMW is now top in reliability right with Toyota/Lexus.

What should I have talked about? It's just a 6 month update of what I've thought of this car in the time. People looking to buy a Supra seem to like knowing info about what it's like to own. Not every video is geared towards every viewer.
