@Al 6r Can you always see shockwaves? I want to think (I could be wrong) that I've seen videos where there was an explosion with a shockwave that you couldn't see. It scared the shit out of everyone in the video since they weren't expecting it. Maybe it was something else. Still, scary stuff

@Al 6r You are correct. By definition a shockwave is a propagating disturbance moving faster than the speed of sound. In this case, no visible or audible shockwave. Hard to say what the rate of expansion was, but probably sub sonic. The gas wasn't compressed and the house gave way relatively easily and quickly.

When I hired on the Railroad in 2013, we were shown that video of the giant explosion and they explained why it's important to do our jobs safely. Whenever a situation like that happens, the only thing we are instructed to grab before running, is documentation that shows every hazardous car in our train and where it is. It has all kinds of information about the materials and who to call. Luckily it's extremely rare to even be in a situation like that.

The one with a child reminds me of when my son was just 2 years old. He woke up before us and somehow was able to unlash a locked child's gate at top of stairs. He went down the stairs and was able to open the door to the outside that takes 2 hands to open. You have to turn the lock and then open the door with your other hand and he did that at 2 years old. We lived near a very busy rail yard and it just happened the police came by a saw our 2 year old son walking on the railroad tracks. When his mother woke up, she did find him and called the police. The police had him at the station. His mother went and got him and the police were very concerned how he got out. They came by the house and saw what was needed to get out and they could not believe he was able to do what he did. Fortunately no trains had come by while he was playing on the tracks. As a recently retired police officer, in a major metro area, I can tell you the job is front row tickets to the best show on earth. You never know what the shift will bring. It’s a horrifying, adrenaline fueled life where you see the best in people but also the worst. Some of the most beautiful touching moments like reuniting a lost child, but the next call is one where they shook their baby to death. It doesn’t make any sense at all but you try to restore order from chaos. I’m glad to be done with it.

Great video! I’ve found a toddler outside in the dark early morning hour, and you go through all the stages of denial until you realize you are indeed seeing a child. Storytime: the kid I found was about 2, and her mom went to the gym at 5 am and left the baby and her 11-year-old son home sleeping. This night the baby woke as mom was leaving and, when backing out of the garage, forgot to hit the button to close the garage door. The baby opened the door leading into the garage and because the garage door was left open was able to wander outside to look for her mom. We lived in townhomes and, with no backyard, had to take our dog out to potty in the front yard. Mid pee, my Neo was interested in something across the street in the dark. I look over and see the outline of a baby. I looked away because it was early and thought maybe I was still waking up?!? I look back over, and the baby is walking towards us and is now under a street lamp, and I can see her and hear her crying for her mom. She was just in a diaper. After some shock, I opened my front door to yell to my husband and let the dog in and run across the street to pick her up before people started leaving for work and possibly hit her. I try asking where she lives and her age and name, but she settles and falls asleep in my arms. I have an idea where she lives, but we kept to ourselves, so I wasn't positive. We called the police and had them walk over to what I thought was her home, and the terrified 11-year-old opened the door to tell them his mom was at the gym. They sent an officer to the gym to get mom, and I handed the baby over to an officer since they found mom and because I had my baby inside to care for. I’m just glad we saw her and she didn’t get hurt.

yeah. and a lot of the debris thrown Into the air didn't disintegrate from the explosion. there was entire sidings as well as the entire wooden foundation of the roof raining down on the utility workers and EMS. so most of the injuries would have been from being hit by these chunks of house probably the size of an elementary schooler.

"Where's the gas leak?" 11:20 "Found it!" Tragedy, first responders often get sent into danger not knowing the extent of the issue or correct protocol. The worst incident of incorrect response (of which "run" was the only correct one, tragically unheeded) I can think of is the propane leak in Ghent where a bunch of people at a gas station got wiped off the map due to failure to get away from hundreds of gallons of LPG becoming propane gas due to a failed valve and inexperienced technician. I'm glad no one here died, but as the son of a former volunteer fire/EMS dad for the better part of 50 years, there but by the grace of God go so many heroes.
