WHICH DISH do you want to try the most? If I could have one of them right now, I'd probably go for the Mackerel Sushi. Simple, but bloody delicious. Since filming this video, I've found myself ordering it every time I go for sushi.

Abroad in Japan I usually order mackerel sushi when I go out for sushi, but mind you, I don't live in Japan so it's not nearly as quality as that looks. That being said, I would probably try the ramen, because come on... butter and curry in a delicious pork ramen? I have to. But it does look a bit like obesity in a bowl.

I un-ironically think Natsuki describing the spicy broth as "Hot Dancing" was brilliant. His descriptions of the taste of food are rich with visual imagery. Like when he described Maezawa Beef like a "Slow River" and "Calm Lake". Soul of a poet! ...and justice.

Watching this again, I think back to when I first watched this, and where I was at in my life. Feeling so hungry, and so broke that I couldn't really afford any food other than potatoes and mushrooms, or occasionally ground pork if it was on sale, I remember crying at how good that food looked. Feeling incredibly grateful that I survived that time and am in a much better place now.

Seeing that giant market made me think; more than going out to eat in Japan, I would probably buy some quality ingredients and just learn to cook an array of dishes while I'm there, since I love to cook anyway. That way, when I go home, I can eat most of them again, within reason (because I don't live next to the sea, so a variety of fresh fish is hard to come by). Anyway, thanks for introducing us to more delicious looking Japanese food. Now I'm going to go eat some cereal, I guess...

Hi! Just came from your TED video and subscribed to this channel right away! What "nokke" actually means here is "putting-on-top" coming from the verb "nokke-ru", which is the casual version of "nose-ru" meaning "to put on top". So you can nokke-ru whatever you like on top of the rice bowl, just as you perfectly explained! I love your positive attitude towards "the cultural differences" in your vlogs, and the contents seem to be quite useful even for the native Japanese viewers like me!

Yes! Instantly recognised the dining room and looked it up, and yes Flying Witch was set in Aomori. Now I need to visit, fav anime of all time.

Wow. I'm time traveling and watching several videos from different periods of the channel's history for the first time and it's neat to see the changes. Modern Abroad seems much more comfortable and confident compared to past Abroad. The newer videos also have more humor and entertainment in them rather than feeling like a documentary. I still like both, though, but it's fun to compare.

I think the "nokke" of nokkedon refers to "nokkeru", meaning to place something on top of something. Not that I knew, I just happened to have looked for it in a dictionary, because I tried to read the explanation of the voucher system. tangorin.com/general/nokke By the way, I would love to see more steady shots of restaurant menus, Chris! Great video as always, thanks!

There was a similar "tea house" in Flying Witch, like the European styled one in the park. If I recall correctly it took place somewhere in Aomori. Does anybody know if it is a coincidence?
@Rock_Surfer

Can't be a conincidence, they're practically identical. Maybe it even has a invisable spooky kawaii waitress ^_^
