hello alan, do you think all the content in your socialism videos is enough to answer the 24 mark question?

I got some points about about fundamentalist socialism. The core definition of socialism is the proletariat owns and controls the means of production. There is no wage labor and means of production are collective property (abolishing private property). The former idea by Lenin was to give the workers control over means of production in Form of soviets. But right after the revolution the communist party gained total power over the soviets and made them meaningless. The soviet union didn't acchive socialism by this definition. The wages were paid by the state and the means of production were controlled by a small group of party people. It's a little weak to say ml is the "bad face of socialism" without showing why it inevitably ends in tyranny. On the other side there is one major socialist branch you didn't even mention. Anarchy or Anarcho syndicalism. Bakunin (member of the first international) and Kropotkin (theorist of communist anarchy) and some others were definitely importent for socialism. And a look into Catalonia in the 1930's shows how Anarcho syndicalisme could work. There wasn't a state for years (the state had up to no power in Catalonia and Andalucia) capitalism was abolished and the workers controlled the means of production.

The soviet system is what socialists commonly refer to as "state-capitalism". It retains the basic structure of a capitalist economy, but replacing private owners with, obviously the state. This is entirely in line with Marxist ideology. Russia, a feudal society at the time, could not slip straight from feudalism to socialism. The progression described in the video, slavery thru various systems leading eventually to communism, had a specific order for specific reasons.

@Unexpected Hummingbird but think critically about what you are saying. "It failed" by what metrics is failure measured, and how is the determination made as to whether or not socialism is responsible for that failure? If "x country collapsed" is the only metric being used, well nations were implementing capitalist reforms and failing for centuries before the industrial revolution made it viable on a national scale. That bit about scarce nations has no bearing on the materialist view of history I'm presenting. If you're gonna respond to something, keep ur response relevant at least

Most of these questions you come across could be answered by a study of socialism's history from the socialist perspective (or more simply, thru conversation with a relatively knowledgable socialist)

You left out a third option that doesn’t fit with Revisionist nor Fundamentalist. Think of Dr Wolf, democratizing the workplace (which isn’t center left like Revisionist nor is it authoritarian like Fundamentalist). As well as having the government provide for the people (not sure what political theory that applies to).

Hi Imperfect Xennial, undeniably as you point out there are many more branches and types of socialism than those I've been able to cover in this video. I'm trying to cover the key types as set out in the A Level Politics Spec rather than a fully comprehensive list. In socialism in particular a fully comprehensive list would be quite an undertaking given the multitube of factions and sub-sections of theory that have developed over time.

This type of socialism is too often pushed out of the mainstream conversation, potentially because it's actually a great idea and the capitalist conservative media and government don't want people to know about it. In my opinion it's the best form of socialism but unfortunately hasn't been implemented yet. I think it's truly the way forward for modern and humane economies. I'm not sure if there's specific terminology but I would refer to it as cooperative socialism or small-state market socialism.

I get the impression you learned this stuff from sources that were invariably NOT socialist, which is likely why some of the concepts don't quite make sense to you

I notice there is no reference to creative or entrepeneurship. This is rarely as a route to riches, more a freedom to determine ones route. Also no reference to the route of nationalisation. This fails because of political interference. It should set the target and benefit from the profits as would a capitalist.
