How can you set boundaries later on in a relationship? I am married and love my man. However we have some communication patterns I really do not like. I am working heavily on myself (emotinal control) so to act also while having disagreements like a lady and getting rid of my negative behaviors such as defensiveness, getting loud etc. But I cannot change my partner. I just know that certain ways of argueing are not what I want to accept anymore. I get now how to communicate your standards when getting to know someone, but how can I establish those boundaries after marriage?

Start small, start by setting small boundaries and come up woth new ideas of managing problems together. Me and my fiance have a weekly meeting where we speak about positive and negative things so we can speak as adults and not be passive aggressive all of the time

Marriage is all about adjusting to each other, so you can change your partner by changing yourself and he will emulate you. You're not actively trying to change him, you will both change/adjust. For one thing, both ignore bad behavior. ALL our (Wife & I) problems are due to poor communication. Men are horrible on picking up subtle things, hints, actions/non-actions, so be blunt, short, concise, complete. Exactly as you did above. It doesn't matter if feelings are hurt, if your man doesn't know the complete problem, he (and you) can't fix it. As you develop communications, you'll find ways to talk w/o hurting feelings. Simply never say "you". See below. There's a serious problem talking about problems. The problem is, men don't understand that what we think is the problem, is not the problem, rather how the problem affects you. It boils down to the wife needing a shoulder to cry on. I usually ask if The Wife wants a solution. It took me a long time to understand the solution is usually simply listening attentively. It goes against our very nature. Arguing is fighting; this is how we handle it. First, we're partners, not combatants. Each fight shortens the relationship. The winner is the one who loses the least. WTF?!?. How can you win by losing? Never say "you", rather describe how the problem affects you, ditto partner. Do you want to be right/divorced or who cares/married. Deciding who's right is an incredible burden, surprisingly heavy and time-consuming, once you realize it. Then objectively lay out the problem, join forces, propose solutions, and fix it. This is very bonding. We always come up w/better solutions together because we see things differently. When mad/tired/loud/defensive, shut the **** up!. And leave. Resume when calm. Objective is the key. Anymore, we don't bother with how it affects us, we just fix the problem and do something pleasant. Your boundaries & goals will evolve from working together these ways. Show ALL this to your husband. Total, honest communication starts here. Best wishes. You don't need luck.
