I ask myself: If a fire burns down my house, will I miss this piece? For sentimental stuff, I ask: If a fire burns down my house, will the memory that I attach to this piece be gone? Both questions help me, but especially for the sentimental stuff it makes it obvious that the memories will stay a yways and I only have a small box left.

So true, especially with sentimental stuff. It stays with us in memories forever with exception of Alzheimer’s and Dementia, but at that point the person doesn’t care about those items or forgotten memories attached to them. With the fire it reminds me a method from the Irish movie Leap year. Very practical decluttering advices!!

My house burned down when I was a junior in high school. Interestingly, I got into minimalism shortly after this. This is a good question to ask, but surprisingly hard to imagine what it's actually like to lose all your stuff without a say in the matter.

After my mother's passing I was the one who had to clear things out and settle the estate. A blessing for me was that "practical" was one of the qualities my mother most admired in people. If she said someone was practical that a compliment. When I was unsure about what to keep or donate or discard something that had belonged to my mother I would think about what she would say about it and the word "practical" would come to mind. For me when making decisions about what had belonged to someone else it was a help to know/think about what that person would have said about the item.

Declutter questions: 1) do I have more than one of these? 2) is this a complete set? 3) do I actually use this, and if so when was the last time I actually can definitely pinpoint when it was used? 4) does this thing annoy the heck out of me? On the go declutter q’s 1) one new thing in, two things out 2) if it breaks, throw it away immediately- never put it. Away to throw away later 3) when putting out the trash, what is lying around that I’ve missed? Magazines, paper.....

I’ve come up with a list of questions that make sense to me and sometimes I need to combine them in order to get a clear picture on whether or not I should keep an item. They are: 1. Is this necessary and does it serve an actual, current function in my life? (Bonus question for things that are needed but may be seasonal - Will it be necessary in the near future?) 2. Does this contribute to my sense of well being? 3. Does this cost or compromise my peace and overall life flow - or does it enhance those things? 4. Does this keep me or distract me from my priorities and goals? 5. Do I want to spend time again to manage this particular item? 6. Can or should this be repurposed to substitute other items I can donate?

Watch multiple episodes of Hoarders and it will give u MAJOR motivation to let go of things you’ve been hanging onto. I always tell my kids when they’re complaining about having to clean their room, “Do u own your stuff or does your stuff own u?” I always tell people if they can’t keep their stuff organized, then their stuff owns them. That’s been an eye opener for a lot of people I’ve told that too.

These questions have been very helpful for me, hope someone gets use out of them too 🙏 For clothes: do I wear this, if not when will I wear it? For books: do I want to read this in the future? For my art and writing: do I want to see/read this in the future? For sedemental items: does it spark joy or bring sadness? I try to imagine when I'm old: what will I be carrying with me?

We are moving to a farm! I try to align what I keep with that future lifestyle and packing light for the move. One of my favorite techniques that helps is "Where can we share?" In my house we have my parents, me (19), and my much littler sisters. My mom and I are joining our craft supplies together so we can consolidate our things. My sisters are sharing toys so they don't need as much storage space keeping them separate. They actually fight less too that way. My mom and I share her smart phone and I might even get rid of my personal computer and use the family computer instead. Seems a waste to have a new family computer when everyone has their own laptops! And looking at our future life, I want minimal tech involvement. I would be so happy if my bedroom was gadget-free. We all share books, dishes, photos, tech, money, and anything else we can think of. Another question I like as a crafter is, "Can I make something just as good, better, or at least good enough?" This goes for clothing made from synthetic materials to things I think I want to buy. If I can make something better suited for me, it can go and if it isn't worth making, it might not be worth buying. Sometimes, I give sentimental things to people I am close to to ease the grief of parting with something you know you will forget all about eventually.
@walkerskii
@walkerskii 3 жыл бұрын
Wow there is much wisdom (thank!) in giving things away to ease the grief of getting rid of something you were previously attached to. instead of sharing one smartphone maybe you could buy a prepaid phone to just to keep in backpack just in case you need it when your mom has gone somewhere with the smart phone. I guess if you keep phone numbers with you you can always ask anyone around you if they wouldn't mind making a call if you have an emergency. But getting rid of a laptop you already own seems silly. So maybe a happy medium is, to just stop buying things, instead of offloading things you've already purchased which can still be useful & offer you convenience, such as a laptop, when another family member is already on the desktop computer.

Does this benefit my lifestyle? This is one of the questions I keep in mind while shopping and decluttering. It ensures I don’t buy something just for the sake of buying it. Asking yourself if an item really, truly benefits your life in some way can help you stop thoughtless purchases and help in the decluttering process. Think objectively: is your life better because you have a certain item? If it isn’t, why are you making space for it?

Both of my parents were really poor from Large families and so both were hoarders. I struggled to minimize mostly when I became a mother and needed to move. I was starting my minimalist journey due to having so much extra baby stuff all over the house. When it came time to move, I realized I needed to downsize! I'm addicted to reading so I will always want books around! But I don't craft as often as I thought I would so I do need to go through my crafting supplies.... I tend to stock up on food and clothes, it's the provider in me.. sometimes to the point of hoarding esp clothes for my son. Thanks for your great content. Very thought provoking as always!

My struggle is that I have very detailed clear plans for many things that I'm not actually using. However I'm starting to handle things more frequently and face up to the reasons why I Won't fulfill those plans. The item then immediately loses it's appeal and I can get rid of it without regretting it. It's a bit of a laborious process emotionally, but at least I'm making progress. I expect I'll eventually get faster, but for now I celebrate every little thing I find the courage to throw away

It's really interesting. I'm on a journey moving towards living in a tiny house and part of that has been getting out of renting and living in a borrowed caravan. This summer my mission is to go through all the clothes and boxes I have stored at my parents house and ask myself 1. Do I still need this 2. Will it fit into a tiny house (I know the basic layout I want and therefore rough storage capacity), and 3. If it will fit, do I really want it? Similar questions to yours and I'm using lots of yours as well. I'm sentimental and a classic "keep it just in case" person so it was a big deal that I got rid of my old school uniform, for example. Will I ever wear it again? No. Do I have other mementos of high school? Yes. Photographs. Which take up far less space and are mostly digitised. Done. It's in the donate pile.

@walkerskii
@walkerskii 3 жыл бұрын
A shoe collection brings you joy, so just enjoy it. The problem is two blenders, two coffee makers, stacks of books you'll never read, piles in the garage... Try to wear a different pair of shoes every day, by putting away the pair you wore today, & set out the next consecutive pair to wear tomorrow. Of course the shoes have to match your outfit, but there's nothing wrong with putting together your outfit starting with the shoes & working up from there. Find a friend who wears the same size as you, see if she would like to take some of the shoes, knowing you could borrow them back for a special occasion or a new outfit.

Most 3 in one in theese categories have smaller maintenance cost and about the same material quality than the simple models. Some brands even have 3in1s that are higher quality. Therefore they're cheaper in the long run. Try searching for different models, always focusing on the tecnical details. They might be easier to figure out than you think. Also read/watch reviews from people who brought and used them (not the commertials or the influencers sponsored by that brand). Speaking about ink: durability/number of pages is better than just being an easy refil model. Think about a reasonable number of pages you're more likely to print and calculate that number divided by the capacity of each model. Take a look on the 100% compatible refils' prices, do the same cauculus. Then multiply it for 12 months. It will give you some clarity of though.

The 6-month or 1-year-rule does so much not work for me! There is stuff in my wardrobe or house that I haven't used in more than 1 year but I know I will definitely use them again! One example: Our sled. And things like that.. I liked the first hack/tipp a lot. Asking myself, whether I would take it with me, if I moved. 👍

There is a difference between minimalism and ending up in some kind of monastic cell. You have to walk a fine line between a welcoming feeling that nurtures both your mind and body. To something that ends of looking unwelcoming and void of warmth, comfort, relaxation and pleasure. I fell in to the trap and lived to regret it.

I said this to my mom and she got mad at me. She doesn't care that my siblings and I will have to sort and throw out all her junk later. She refuses to get rid of it. So yes, ask yourself this, but be careful saying to someone else to try to encourage them to de-clutter. It can backfire.

røb does this mean you don’t have any? Or that you don’t decorate for Christmas? Or maybe rent your seasonal decorations? Just curious if anyone has tips on how to save space in this area.

I’ve minimalised Christmas. No more cheap bargain ornaments/ gone/ one style line and colour theme/ sold everything else last November. Kept only the beautiful handed down Christmas tree decorations. Got ride of all the nasty outdoor decorations and went for low glow, soft white, simple solar, lines and waterfalls/ sold all the muilti colour/ power boards/ extension cords ..... reduced space down to two large clip lid, plastic boxes and store in the attic / crawl space. Easy to set up, easy to pack down, still looks great at night, and fits with the general lack of “clutter” when it’s up. I do it for the kids. Some traditions are worth hanging onto #sparkjoy #creatememories #growexperiences

In my journey of minimalism I believe I have gotten through the first few steps ok. And working out the rough ones (example: letting go of sentimental items) however I want to go to the next step of freeing my self from items or worry of needing items. But I can’t seem to find any guidance on the “ next level” of minimalism....for lack of a better phase. All and any suggestions appreciated. Thank you 😊

I started my journey in the beginning of 2020 too. I am finally at the step of letting go of sentimental items. Over the years I kept a lot of postcards, letters, and birthday cards from my friends and honestly, I am not even in contact with some of them anymore. I looked through my sentimental items and thought to myself: for someone who's not part of my physical life, he/she is taking up a lot of precious physical space in my life. So, I declutter 2/3 of my sentimental items just like that. I am also confused as to what my next step is...

How to declutter your daughter's closet: When she isn't home, start slowly removing similar pieces of clothing (& things you know she hasn't worn in ages) until she asks about it. You will have been storing them up in bags, so it will be simple to retrieve. Once this comes to her attention, step #2 is removing 100% of the clothing into a spare room, & let her come "re-shopping" to pick out a week's worth of clothes, but then bag up those outfits, to trade those items back in for next week's clothes, she can go "shopping in her own closet", until she realizes there are outfits she hasn't worn from the spare room in over a year & it's time to donate them (If you don't have a spare room, simply trade closets with her, you can both shop in each other's closets every Sunday afternoon)

If you have space to store those platters in an organized fashion, why bother getting rid of them, when eventually you need to downsize, do it then.

Mine was when I had enough. The last straw was I stepped on my ketchup packet in my car & it was a mess. From there I have lost my license & if i don't find it I possibly won't have my new job. I got some bad habits as far as taking better care of stuff.

1. If I moved, would I take it with me? 2. When did I use this last? 3. Would I buy it again/Would I pay for it? 4. Do I need this to be happy? 5. Why do I hold on to this? 6. Where did it come from? Btw: The idea of No. 2 or to get rid of it, if you don't use it that often (and in case buy it new..) conflicts with the principle of your "upgradelessness" from your "8 principle of minimalism" (?)- video.. 🤔
