I am somewhat of a minimalist. Here is a downside- when people buy me things I dont want them. Unless it’s something I picked out for myself it’s probably not something I want. Clothes, furniture, decorations, etc… unless I hand picked it and it’s made to last to me it’s basically junk.

I am a child of a hoarder and as a result, I am rather OCD about cleaning and organizing. I also think that when you grow up in extreme conditions, you tend to follow the same path or run the other way. I like how much money we save by being more intentional. We have no debt whatsoever, even though our budget for our family of 5 is barely over poverty level. My mom's storage unit to hold what doesn't fit in her 2500+ square foot house, two garages and shed is more than a week's worth of largely organic and specialty foods for my family. I'd much rather live well than pay to store items I haven't even looked at in decades. You are so right about the cleaning too! I can dust and vacuum my entire house in about half an hour and it took me an entire day to do my mom's living room. I think some people think minimalism means you have to live like a monk, like your intro, but real life minimalism means you have room for all of the things you really love and nothing else hindering your life. Love your videos, thought-provoking and yet still entertaining, the best of both worlds.

I’m a new subscriber. Thanks for this! My parents have passed away and I inherited a houseful and two storage buildings full of their 60 plus years of belongings. It’s been so stressful for me; grieving on top of the overwhelming experience of the “stuff” … I’m seeking peace at this stage in my life. It’s so very hard, the guilt of knowing I have to let go of the items with so many memories attached to them. This morning I had a thought that entered my mind: hold on the the memories. Let go of the stuff! With the help of videos like this I am ready to begin the process. So thank you for these videos!

I feel the same way. My dad died a year ago (mom died 20 years ago) and I didn't want anything in their house. I was made to feel guilty for not wanting anything. I ended up taking a few decorative items of my mom and they are displayed in my home. But instead of bringing me happiness I think it's depressing because it's a reminder that they are both now gone. I'm thinking of taking them down, packing them up and storing them. For some reason I can't give them away yet I just don't want to display them either.

Really good video! I would recommend one more tip, find some friends who have the same mindset as yourself so you are always surrounded by people just like you and who have the same goals in life! Stay away (as much as possible) from people who only value things...
@ChantaltheFrency2 жыл бұрын
@Dave true what you say! very true! but I was actually trying to refer to people who use people as they should use stuff. Shallow and just around to use others. Of course you can have people with a different mindset in your life if they have a good heart they are true to you but avoid people who use people our their friends as they use their goods. Who replace you in a blink of an eye. So sorround yourself with people who think like you and maybe learn from you about concept "consumption" (and you from them). Minimalism is different for everybody and it's good that you can introduce people to your lifestyle/ vieuw maybe they can pick up ingredients to apply in their life too (and vise versa). I just wanted to say sorround yourself with people who are worth it! Hope it makes sense. I do my best to write in English although I speak French. Sometime I can not literally translate what I try to say from French to English, I only have basic vocabulary😅 but I try... Have a nice day.

Love all your videos. I agree with everything you have said in this one. I've been on a serious decluttering journey since my oldest four children have married and left home. I still have two teens at home. I've always been very tidy and organised but after the older four children left home there was a lot of extra stuff that I didn't need anymore. Also nearing the end of my home schooling journey I've sold and given away so many books and resources. This year I emptied four large bookshelves and sold them all recently. Extra beds, desks, bedding, filing cabinet, bookshelves, exercise equipment all sold! I've also thrown away a lot of extra things I just didn't need or use like odd plates, cups, etc. my kitchen is streamlined now and I love it. I love that there is less to clean and dust. I love the extra space and I love the mental freedom this has given. Love your videos! 👍😀❤️

"Your Money or Your Life" was a book in the 1990s by Dominguez/Robin that started me on minimalism (called "voluntary simplicty" then). They said it's easier to save $100 than to get a $100 raise but the result is the same. Their goal was to retire and be full-time volunteers. This dovetails with your ideas in the 3:22 chapter.

I think this is the thing that holds back a lot of people, they dont address the problem or the root cause of their hoarding. Now i only have a few pairs that goes with almost everything and i love all of them and everytime i use them, i feel confident knowing that i have a great pair on my feet instead of constantly thinking if i wore the best pair in my closet when i had lots of them.

Shots in nature are beautiful ☺️ The big benefit for me is teaching my older son about decluttering toys (he is 5 yo). We do it every time before birthday, Christmas, Easter...and a few random times during the year. Before new toys come, some of the old ones go to charity. He is very good at that, he declutters his toys in a minute, and I've never seen him being sad about any toy he decluttered. I am doing the same with the younger one now (2.5 yo). The mess in their room is never too big, it can be tidied in 5 mins 👌

My slogan that I came up with to help myself is "less to do is good for you". And "less mess, less stress" is the same! 😂❤️Both true both good reminders 💕 I came into the situation this week actually where I didn't have enough clothes to get dressed properly! I have been decluttering a lot the past two years and always getting rid of stuff that dosent fit and or are broken: but I didn't take the the time to replace certain things and all of a sudden I didn't have enough! It was amazing experience ❤️😀I actually had to go shopping out of pure need that's hardly ever happened in the past 💕 when I brought the new things home I of course had to go through my wardrobe and of course I found even more items that had to go 😂😂😂❤️ I love it. I have full overview and it's easy to get dressed 💕💕💕💕

Excellent video. With living in a small studio apartment for over ten years I got to the point where I don't have room to bring anything thing home unless I get rid of something. I started getting rid of stuff, it is a good feeling, I have gotten rid of stuff on Craig List and have made money so it makes it easier to get rid of stuff. The only thing I miss is buying vintage record albums, but I have almost 400 albums that I bought in the last 3 or 4 years. I'm going to make reel to reel tapes and get rid of the records I can make some money off of them. I have my Lionel trains set up in a large figure eight track that the trains are from the early 1950,s it looks so cool with all the lights. I could probably get the most for it around the Christmas time. I sold a train set a few years ago, the people who bought it, it was for their 92 year old Mom that was in a nursing home. Bet she would be the most popular lady with all the old men. It made me feel good knowing it was going to bring joy to her at the last stages of her life!

For every time I threw, gave away or sold stuff after I realized I didn't want or need the things I felt more at ease. I have my own storage rooms in my basement where I have all the items I have put for sale. I sell items basically every week and by each time I sell something I feel a relief. Relief that I am getting money in to my bank account so that I can decide to either save it, buy food or other items that I need. A relief that I no longer have that item for sale, can delete the ad (I look at the deleting as another part of the decluttering) and I no longer have that item in my possession. Even though my storage rooms are not something I have to look at on a daily basis and it's not something I pay extra for I still feel that it's something I would like to clear out. Most often I get payed well and I manage to save money for future purchases and investments such as an apartment. It's nice to know that the items that's now just in my way and is for sale also contributes as a so-called side hustle. I don't renovate the stuff, they are just sold as is, mostly. The less work I do the more time I have. I otherwise have furnitures that's hard to sell at the time being so I'll have to wait until the right buyer comes along, do some work on them or sell them as is for less. Have to say I am really stingy and I want the absolute most I can get for them since they are antiques and I payed alot my self at one point. This definitely makes it harder for me to sell for a lower price. I just hope I can be lucky whit these and sell as is. One thing is for sure and that is I'll be happy the day they do sell! It's always the prosess for me that's the hardest part, where I might have to sell and Not get as much as I want.

The thought that I won't have to think about it again and that the space it took up will now be free. I still have a mountain, but I've been chipping away at it for months.

Your place looks beautiful! Right now we're working on getting rid of old nasty furniture and donating anything useable and in good condition. Space is the big thing now.

the lazy bit hit hard for me. I hate laundry but I've worn black for years only, so I narrowed my shirts and pants to 7 and 3 respectively and about a dozen underwear, now I actually look forward to it because it's over and done quickly and I go about my day. same thing with the excess dishes I do not use

completely agree! you know what is like to live in a crowded house with 3 kids, i realized many years ago that the more toys and nonesense things i bought for them they end into trash one way or the other, i stopped buying a lot of things we really dont need . For isntance. Xmas presents are things they really need (computer devices etc) I noticed i really love having more space at home, instead of spending hours cleaning.. good video! Saludos de Perú ;)

I try to do the one in, one out method as well. I struggle in a few areas with it (books come to mind, even though I only buy a bunch twice a year at the library book sale).

Breathing is easier....hardly any anxiety left, even though I am very new to minimalism and still have a ways to go in my house and office. I am now thinking of other areas of my life I can apply minimalism to.

I just subscribed today! Decluttering has been on my mind a lot. I definitely want to do this. Everything you have reflected on as to why having less stuff, is true. I enjoyed your video so much. ☀️

When looking to sell my home I had to rent two garages for use as storage to move out the clutter that the house had become. Unfortunately that resulted in having stuff boxed up for over 15 years, slowly selling, giving away and finding new homes for a lot of it. Shortly after I had to empty my parents' home. A three bedroom and four bedroom reduced to two rooms. The furniture, fortunately found a new home quickly but so much other stuff from 60 years of accumulation.

Good stuff, bro. And hopefully one day you'll take it up the next level and apply all that to other things like useless friendships, employment, romantic partners, etc. And of course you'll probably realise you don't even need to live in an empty house paying a ton for dead space. One can live in a car, a van, a tiny room in a flatshare, a tent, etc. Yeah, freedom really is boundless! 😍

I have not bought clothes in 3 years. I have been purging my closet these past three years and then friends give my cute items I needed not want. I am using boxes as organization in my closets and cupboards. I own one pair of running shoes, one pair of boots and one jacket. Thank you for your video.

Lose your laptop? Not a problem to solve. Who loses a laptop? I lose tools often yes. but I cannot create and build and fix without tools and things. Organizing is quite important and I can agree, getting rid of some stuff can help organize.

We got sucked into consumerism as this benefitted the stores selling this stuff. We fell to their marketing or thinking we'd be happier w this junk. Now it's time to cut dead weight. Eliminate stuff we don't need. Life will be better w less junk around us.

I agree with all of these. I have a 2.5 year old so it's been a struggle so I am going minimal but he is going minimal lite lol. I have gotten rid of 60% of my stuff and 30 of his.

I have a rule. 1 comes in, 1 goes out. For instance, we are just after the holiday season and family got me some clothing. I have gone through and sold, gifted or donated an equal amount so no new space was used up. Same for cups or glassware. Got some beer steins as gifts, kept the new ones and got rid of some old ones. Books. yep, lots of books but my library is full. So unless and or until I expand the shelving system, the number of books that came into my life as gifts or whatnot will leave just as fast. Christmas tree ornaments. People gave us a few new ones, I went through and got rid of a few older ones. Balance must be maintained. ;)

That is an interesting concept. I really like it! If you have something already that you like then it really makes you think about whether or not you need something to replace it…
@LarimarCabrera2 жыл бұрын
This is great. Thanks for sharing. Looks peaceful. I think it is not so much about the minimalism and more about how intentional you have become. You're taking the time to consider what you like and what things you need. You intentionally choose what surrounds you and what to keep out and you live by what you believe in, intentionally. That is a breath of fresh air.

It seems so nice to have less stuff that’s one of the reasons why I wanna get into van life. I do own a lot of things because a lot of things come with a memory for me and I’m OK with that but sometimes I think it’s nice to downsize. 😊

Bit by bit I’m getting there. It might be cool to think that as I age I diminish my possessions to the point that all I own would fit in that same size box I will.

Something I’ve been doing over the last couple years is finding one shirt, pair of shorts, pair of pants, etc. that fits and looks well, then just buying as many color variations as possible. Still makes you look like you’re wearing a variety of outfits, but you waste very little time going around shopping.

I used to be have a minimalist house and life Since I had my children my house gets cluttered very fast, I do declutter very often as well, but I am already suffering from anxiety and getting depressed, THE STUFF come more often and I am loosing control over the situation, I have donated so many toys, that I could had probably open an store. And the clothing situation, the worst part, the laundry is done everyday, the folding every two weeks, and I believe we don't have to much clothes, but is four of us. Regarding the toys.... For birthdays and Christmas they receive so many silly toys, that I decided to create a list of the stuff I consider more useful, like books and some noise free educational toys. Yet, people bought from the list and whatever toys they also wanted to give. And the thing is that I love clear spaces, being around stuff made me feel out me. I am just ventilating here. 🧘
@MyCrownstar2 жыл бұрын
Of recommend returning the toys that you do not want your children to have. If you can't return perhaps exchange for something that your child or family would find useful. Finally if that's not an option, regift or donate the toys.

I’m an oxymoron. I am a minimalist in my heart. My clothing and personal items can fit in half a closet. But I have a husband and 6 kids, who are active and involved in sports. So I spend hours cleaning and picking up but I do love seeing my kids playing and creating.

A very good friend of mine said she couldn’t understand how I could get rid of so many clothes, because I “loved” clothes so much. I probably enjoyed shopping for clothes, but having a lot of clothes never made me happy. I told her that I do “love” the clothes I now have and they don’t get lost in a closet full of “stuff”. I still don’t think she will ever understand my need to have less and somehow feel great about it. But that’s okay.

Excellent video!!! Thank you so much. I am a new subscriber. I have done this in the past and it was exhilarating, it gave me such a feeling of freedom and less stress. But when my wife passed away in 2016 I stored away lots of stuff from our home, and now I just finally got rid of my storage room, which I had for 42 months, for $110 month, what a waste of money, you are so right. It cost me $4,620 to only find out the vast majority of this stuff was junk. I did sell some of it and I am going through the rest of it now, but WOW, what a waste of money. Keep up the great work Gabe. I will watch all of your videos. Thank you!!! PS I shared this on my Facebook page as well. Your video is very insightful...
