Still think midnight is without a doubt the most terrifying thing that's ever been in doctor who, so brilliantly done as an episode but the doctors very real reaction to it afterwards is what drives it home, he won't even joke about it.

@@minicle426 the thing for me is that it's a proper mystery, we have no idea how that creature worked, how to fight it or even guarantee that it was gone by the end of the episode, it's still out there. Even when he fought the devil on the impossible planet, that has some great mystery and some scenes of proper horror and suspense, in the end it had a name, a form you could see and most importantly, a weakness, I feel like that's why the creature in midnight got to me the way it did. it's something that just was, again on an equally impossible setting, filled with mystery of its own, a moving shadow, that infects your mind, no way of fighting back except to stay silent, to never speak again or risk it being one step closer to controlling you.

@@thomasnolastname8734 @Thomas No Last Name that was part of it, it made them fight each other, heightened their paranoia, drove them apart so they could not work together to stop it. if you watch the episode again, notice how they become more and more irrational, aggressive and uncooperative as the entity becomes closer and closer to taking over a new host, then as the creature is finally beaten they are all freed from it's affects and sit there sort of emotionally drained by it all, it to me is one of the main details that makes it such a terrifying idea, as that in any significant population would create absolute chaos and basically be unstoppable.

The Midnight entity has always been the most fascinating out of any creature in the entire show. It's the only one that has ever been able to render the doctor truly helpless, he was without his voice, his only weapon, the ability to talk his way out of situations.

While the Impossible Planet is a close second personally,Midnight without a doubt is the scariest one on here. Particularly because the bigger threat were the people rather than the Midnight Entity itself. It also doesn't help that there is NO indication on whether the Entity is actually dead. It could very well still be out there, waiting for its next victim unlucky enough to pass by the planet without knowing what's lurking there.

A scary planet from classic Who, Spiradon, lush forest and people who can make themselves invisible and an ice volcano, seems okay on the face of it, but there are Daleks sneaking around in the jungle, using the invisibility skills of the locals, a cave under the ice volcano full of Daleks and a visit from the Dalek Supreme, who kills another Dalek, simply for failure. No safe place for the Doctor, Jo Grant or the Thals who have come to stop the Daleks. Planet Of The Daleks.

Chibnall writing has been the wrost thing I've ever sat through. I have no doubt that Orphan 55 could have been a good story, but it was written with more cardboard cutout charactures that no one could care for, had no interesting plot and the moral of the story was so unsubtle they might as well of violated us with it. By comparison, look at the impossiable planet and midnight (and the library). Every character had a clearly defined personality despite the limited time they had to make their marks. These stories had plots and mysteries and nuance. Looking forward to RTDs return.

@@minicle426I like that your calling out RTD for using Deus Ex Machinas, when Chris Chibnall was imo just as guilty but he couldn’t even write a coherent story half the time. Add in the lack of personality written on the characters (how many times did we see a shot where the cast were told to stand in a line, facing the camera and robotically ask questions) and the awful understanding of the morality of the doctor (“letting the giant spider painfully suffocate is a better thing to do than putting it out of it’s misery”. I mean what the hell?, this wasn’t even the only example, there were so many times (i can think of atleast 3) the doctor or a companion did something like this). Honestly, after CC, I will welcome RTD and SM back with open arms.

I loved Orphan 55. Personally I think it being Earth after nuclear war, climate change and a massive doomsday event is one of the most confronting concepts explored. We think about it with stuff like the Doomsday Clock, but do we ever think about what would be left behind? The monstrosities and evolved mutated creatures? What survives a massive Doomsday event like that? Exploring how even after the human race might be gone, how our ancestors might profit off the tragedies of the past (or the future from our perspective). I get it's not the most popular story, but personally I love it. IMO a point isn't being properly made if viewers can just block their ears and pretend it's not there.

Orphan 55 is an interesting idea for sure. It's the execution that... Isn't all there. For one, it just feels preachy. The doctor stands on a soapbox and preaches to the choir about climate change in what might be the most cringe worthy scene in the show's history. For another, it's incredibly shallow. There's no nuance or interesting discussion past "climate change bad." I mean, they're not wrong? It just doesn't say anything new or intruiging. It feels hollow and tame, using ambiguous language like "people" rather than addressing the root of the issue. And last, and perhaps most importantly... It just kind of sucked. The monsters weren't well designed, none of the side characters were remotely likeable, the conflict was resolved too quickly, the acting was atrocious, the sets were dull... The whole thing falls flat on its face in almost every way. Orphan 55, in my opinion, was a trainwreck.
