Even with virtual machine you still have to plug it in to a physical machine in order to be able to use it in the virtual machine. Not quite reliable if you ask me. If you do not have a spare machine you don't mind to be damaged, take it to a public place and verify it isn't infected. If it is, simply do not plug it in your machine and dispose of it, possibly take it to the police station. If you are actually a content creator who does this kind of investigation, then I guess your primary concern is security of your network and your machines, so you should have a spare machine or some sort of testing machine that could handle this kind of stuff. Basic rules when you're about to investigate contents of an unknown USB stick: 1) A machine that is completely disconnected from any kind of network (not just Internet, disconnect it completely) 2) A machine that you can easily repair if there is bad stuff done to it 3) If you cannot repair the machine, at least make sure it is easily replacable The USB stick coming from the dark web might be all sorts of things - Rubber Ducky, regular USB storage device, or even USB Killer. I wouldn't order anything from the dark web, but if someone does, please do not order it to your house address, instead use some sort of one-time PO Box where you specify the PO Box address and number. I wouldn't even recommend you to use your real name, but it depends on the post office. They may require you to enter your credentials for the PO Box, but at least don't give it to the sender, just give him the address. If the name is required, use something like John Doe. This might be the address format you give the sender: Doe, John William Street 15A New York City PO Box 1B I don't know if the name registered to the PO Box has to be the same name that you give the sender. Would make sense if not, because what if you want to intend to use the PO Box for other people you trust? You pay for it, you provide it to people you trust. I would never use my real identity to order anything from the dark web. Heck I wouldn't even order anything from the dark web regardless of my real name or fake identity. But some of you might be adventurous enough to try that stuff, so please be extremely careful and avoid providing your real identity.

I once found a police USB that held several folders pertaining to multiple different cases. These cases ranged from two murders, to a herion bust. They included personal notes and several photographs. I was actually scared to keep it and for a while there so I searched for a way to give it back. I even went as far as calling the local police department. However, when I told them the content of the USB, and that I had seen a female gunshot victim who had only half of their face left? They kinda went, "I dunno, call the *BI (asterisk replaces state) otherwise just keep it." Not their exact words, obviously but that was the general gist of it. I was gonna just throw it away. My boyfriend would not allow that to happen to a 32 gig USB stick. He deleted everything on it and USES IT TO THIS DAY.
