Are you in a relationship? Do you have a crush on someone right now? Are you really in love? Or are you just emotionally hungry? Emotional hunger can be caused by deprivation in childhood. Those who suffer from emotional hunger usually look to rely on something or someone else to fill a void or emptiness in themselves. If you started your relationship in desperation with only attention and affection in mind, it’s best to evaluate if that desire is being mistaken as true love. So, how do you know if you are confusing emotional hunger for love? Well, here are six signs you are emotionally hungry.
We also made a video on the signs you're emotionally wounded: • 7 Signs You're Emotion...

Being someone who thought they conquered trauma, even now, I still have this void in me, it’s just there… I’m going to college, and seeing this video made me cry. I’m lost. Gone to a therapist, they told me I didn’t need therapy. I’m just… an emotional parasite? Is that a way of thinking about it? That’s how I’m thinking about it. I’m sucking all the emotions out of others in order to sustain myself, but as a result, I drain them. I turn to video games, but is it enough? Honestly, video games were my escape, but now I’m just lost. I’m crying in bed… lost as can be. Edit: Update 2 years later: Therapy helped a lot for me. Doing CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and EMDR was incredibly transformative for me. Highly recommend. Therapy can help a lot with this. Doing much better now.

Your comment is literally me. I felt and done the same things you have, and I don’t know how to fix it. My therapist also told me that I was fine and now it just seems like feeling the way I feel is normal. This emptiness and constant need for affection has driven me down what many may consider a spiraling dark hole. People can just say “oh just look at the bright side of things” but that isn’t really going to stop me from feeling the drive to seek the validation of others. I try to find alternatives by playing games, running, or focusing on my college courses, but even then the thought of wanting constant attention never goes away. I don’t know how to fix it and I feel lost and that the world holds no meaning unless I can establish those connections with others.

You both should search for another therapist. This is definitely not normal and you need help and support from a professional therapist. Please search for one who will support you. Don't give up. I don't know how old you are. But when I was 17, they told me the same. Later I found out that they don't like to give people under the age of 18 a diagnostic. I wish i didn't gave up then. But I thought they are right and I'm just a bad person. Until I found a therapist, some terrible years later. So please don't give up and search for help. If you don't feel good or healthy, you have the right to go to a therapist. I'm so sorry your therapist was so incompetent. But there are some good ones out there. Just please don't give up. I know how it feels.

I'm not sure if I'm emotionally hungry, but the last line reminded me of something else. My mum always shared all of her problem with me (maybe bc I don't talk much; prefer to listen), even the very personal stuff. I get that parents too have problems and hiding them from kids isnt particarully good, but telling a 14yo about your parenting problems that involve your siblings whom you love very much leaves very mixed feelings. She always talked so openly about her poor situation with money, so I felt guilty bc I was one of the things she had to spend money on. I'll have to make sure that I'm not that type of person in any relation bc it's really draining for the other person
@Harkz0r
@Harkz0r 3 жыл бұрын
I have mixed feelings about that kind of situation, honestly. Both of my parents shielded me from a lot of stuff until they divorced. I chose to stay with my mother for two reasons: because I wanted to remain in my family home to minimise the upheaval (I was quite sheltered) but also because I feel like she needed me more than he did, even though if I have to be perfectly honest, I was more attached to him. I'll never forget the times where I had to play counselor while she was drunk, and it was a dice roll whether she would even remember what I said the next morning or whether she would become irrationally ill-tempered or even violent and a danger to herself. I always told her that I would want for my parents to feel as open with me as I did with them, because I loved her and cared about her, but looking back I can't say that it didn't cause me any harm, either. That kind of thing is insidious, like a slow poison; I thought I was invulnerable at the time, but in the end I suppose that's just not how humans are. I don't regret any of my decisions (except for one that I made much later in life) but I still wish things had turned out a little differently, perhaps... if nothing else, at least you have an insight on how it feels to be in that position and what to avoid.

This just made me realize that Venti is one of the most mentally stable characters edit: with the advent of all the new characters and catching up to the lore, i would like to change my opinion on that and say that Kazuha is much mentally stable than the others, and that's coz of the way he deals with it. he has a stoic personality and way of looking at life, and i personally vibe with it. yes i know that Amber and Barbara, and a lot of other characters are probably much more mentally in-tune, but im looking at this in terms of what they've all went through. and i doubt amber and barbara have gone through much of anything. idk about sumeru characters tho, i could be wrong

I'm starting to understand my old wounds a lot better now than I ever did in earlier stages of my life, and this video honestly hit close to home a little... I know I'm not the only one who's been adopted and brought to America for a better life, and yet, living in the states for most of my life has made me feel different things at different points in time. I just didn't understand half of the things I was carrying with me at the time, whether it was abandonment issues that are related to me being adopted, or feeling like a wallflower in certain social situations back in high school l and struggling to speak up for myself. I definitely don't blame my parents now for how I've turned out, but if anything, I realize that my views in life and how I navigate it doesn't make having a relationship with them easy sometimes.

I was lost for a long time I used to just smoke and drink to not feel anything or even think about the past. Now looking back at my childhood I realize I was deprived of the love and attention we all need to be stable and well “normal” and when I finally got that form of attention I gave it my all, I was afraid of being alone again so I did everything to please her not knowing I was hurting myself at the same time just for us not to last. It’s funny how life works. Somedays your happy, somedays your sad, but for me it’s like I can’t feel anything anymore.

I see almost all of these in myself. I've been dealing with ptsd for a large part of my life and it's just gotten worse by the manifestation of extreme depression (rather the realization it was always there), and worsening anxiety. A big catalyst for all of this was someone I loved more than anything whose trauma I internalized and their traumas ended up traumatizing me further. However I never knew emotional hunger existed until this video and I see myself in all but one of these symptoms as I prefer to isolate than be super social however I do rely on a tight knit group for companionship. I appreciate the video and anyone who bothered to read such a long randrandom stupid rant from a stranger, I really don't have anyone to talk to so i end up spilling my guts to anywhere I can without thinking.

@TristanJames12
@TristanJames12 3 жыл бұрын
@@e99783 I think that's a gross oversimplification of how mental health issues work. To some degree you can "train" yourself to think or feel differently and reduce your mental health issues and neurotic habits, but you can only go so far with that as it is just a surface solution, and these issues are likely to come up again later if that is the only solution you use. All mental health issues and neurotic behaviours are there for a very good reason, whether you understand why or not, so you're not wrong for having them and you don't need to be trained or corrected out of them. These things stem from trauma and from being hurt in the past, and you need to address and work through this stuff and as you do the mental health issues will naturally dissipate as they will no longer being needed. Not trying to disrespect, I just find that people commonly underestimate the depth and the real causes of emotional issues, and so I want to mention that trying to train yourself out of them is just a surface solution and it won't really do much other than reduce your symptoms a bit, but the wound still exists deep down.

I've recently gotten out of a relationship. One that has left me emotionally drained as it felt like I was the only one trying to do my best in it, but in the end, it left me feeling so empty. All these points hit me perfectly. I have a new group of friends, often wanting to meet more people, I'm overly joyous with them, and I am having an interest in someone, but even we both agreed not to do anything serious until we're both on stable minds. Thankfully, I have been working on making myself a better person, and keeping myself happy instead of relying on others. Working out is slowly getting added into my routine, so I can build some self-confidence as well, but not a day goes by where I feel so lonely and feel like I need someone by me to hug. I'm working on kicking that habit, but it is *very* difficult. I've got too much on my time to get help of sorts, so I'm doing what I can myself to at least lift some of my burden. Even before the relationship amplified my need for affection, I've sort of always been this kind of person. Someone that loves to be around others and gain enjoyment out of it.

I can relate to some of this too, I think it's just how much its affecting your behaviour mostly; if you have enough self control or tend to bottle things (like suffering in silence) up it might not drain people around you, and for those who act upon it and frequently involve others it might drain people around them more. Ofc there's a lot of nuance depending on each person's situation, like having a very supportive friend compared to people who aren't as supportive and rather distance themselves when things aren't roses and sunshine

I think my relationship started as emotional hunger, as I had just gotten out of an abusive relationship. I pushed myself to do things to give him so he would love me, as I was taught I wouldn't be loved unless I was giving. I'm happy to say my boyfriend has taught me that I am worth loving, and that I no longer need a relationship to be happy, and that he's taught me to love myself. Being in a relationship is my choice and not something I am dependant on. And me and him have been together for about 2.5 years, and going pretty strongly :) Eta: we broke up a few months back. Luckily, I'm ok and have matured and dealt with it pretty well I think. Im happy and independent, and now actually talk to friends about my issues. :)

I kind of related to some of the signs. Especially about being clingy and doing whatever the other person wants me to do even if that went against my own values (for instance having sex everytime we met even though I wanted to go on dates and spend more quality couple time). I was actually surprised to see this video recommended to me when my recent 'relationship' ended up in a bad way. Now I think I have a better idea on what things I have to avoid and on what I have to start working on. I don't feel insecure about myself in a physical way, but usually more on the aspect of being worthy of someone. When I compare my dates/partners to myself I always value them higher because of their education, work, social life, financial situation, etc. I always have this nagging thought telling me: "Faruk, you're not worthy of this person". Eventually this thought always makes me anxious and put more effort, maybe too much effort, into maintaining a relationship. Until now I have never had a good relationship last over a year. The only one that lasted more than a year was my first and most toxic relationship 😅 I believe my first step will be to take a hiatus from looking for someone to fill the void, but instead focus on myself and really think about what love means to me and what I'm expecting to find. Maybe it's just foolish hope, but I really hope to come across true love spontaneously instead of having to rely on dating apps.

Emotional hunger can also be contagious. If someone mistakes emotional hunger for love because they've been told that they're loved, they might mirror and adopt similar behavioural patterns. A better understanding of the difference between love and desire is helpful. It's not love if they claim to love you but you still feel like fundamental aspects of your identity are being ignored or rejected as they see fit. The traits mentioned here may not necessarily exist at the same time or in the same person. Some people cycle through them. People pleasers may have a hard time choosing who to please and end up hurting people in an effort to please the wrong people. And they can easily turn against you if you aren't easily pleased or impressed. In turn they can be easily manipulated because they don't have strong core values to keep them grounded.

I found this video very informative. My mother never hugged or showed affection to her sons so i'd never even had a hug until i met my first girlfriend at 11 and nearly had a meltdown just being able to hug. I felt fine in relationships, but outside of them i've felt so emotionally hungry that i can hardly focus on anything. Interesting though, i don't seem to fit most of the issues/signs listed in the video. I'd go for casual sex if i thought it'd help but my emotional need is only met by connection. I will say that i could be a bit clingy at the beginning of a friendship or relationship, but once the relationship is going i feel fine, in fact totally cured of this horrible feeling and can easily spend time apart from my partner with out any needy kinds of feelings. Thanks for the video, it's good to hear this spelled out again. Also, i empathise with anyone going through this... it's truly a horrible debilitating feeling.

Serious question: this video's symptom is exactly me. What should I do as a first action? Not care about others? I'm at the point where I'm afraid to talk to others because I might accidentally say something I shouldn't have and hurt or make others go away. Is it just go on with nature and life? I'm at the point where I have to put on a mask with the most mundane personality that I don't like(and isn't healthy) to respond to every situation with a "normal" response. Having this personality is safe and painful, people will never reach out to an uninteresting person, i a lot of times wonder if the people i hold close think i have even any worth. I'm on this journey alone is what my daily high school routine has become. (Objectively speaking, my classmates are amazing, it's just my state of soul that's the problem)

Progress update: After a “conscious” mental breakdown(MB)(where you’re aware of your actions), I’ve convinced myself that I’ve hit rock bottom, I’ve lost important social circles, the value of my self esteem, and what it means to love. During my MB, I kept asking myself “why?”, and it dawned on me on what I was most afraid, emotional numbness, I was literally deprived of any emotions, and I believed that it was my subconscious sending his last attempt at saving my soul. I’ve realized that after more than 7 years of my life, I finally understood why my personality was in such shambles. I had all the pieces on why I am what I am, from the fact that I was emotionally hungry because I was beforehand bullied which resulted in me distancing from my family, and then that lead to a lot more complications… After that MB, instead of hitting rock bottom and going to the basement next, I thought to my self that I have nothing left to lose other than myself. so I decide to go back to square one, rebuild and train my personality with the great help of streamers(notably offlineTV and friends) where I can choose the healthy personalities to harbor. I have nothing left lose, only a world, my world, to conquer, win and build a foundation on top of it. If you lose something, it was never yours to begin with, and what is not yours does not belong in your heart but ambition instead. There is no risk when you have nothing left to lose. All that’s left is yourself and where you want to go. I was very scared at first to talk to my classmates with a brand new energetic personality , but don’t worry there’s always a first to everything except there’s a time limit(your life). You don’t have time to worry. “Progress” is not a waste of time. “My mind is like chess, each action represents a personality trait, each move an action, each game an experience.” -myself

I feel this yet I don't, I'm an introvert who would rather watch movies and get depressed about their relationships then make my own. Then when I do see people, due to my isolation and urge to keep the Convo going. And I end up talking your ears off about myself and bug you if you want to talk. But I don't even know if I do the last part, I've been alone for a while... But I'm the end I'm left feeling worse as I stress about what you thought of the interaction, all the while keeping my flaws on full blast in the back of my head. Idk if I'm like this cuz I'm an Infp, a Virgo, or a Sylph of Space. Edit: Thanks for the first person who like this, it gave me a chance to edit the original text. Didn't change much just added like two sentences at the end and also changed a bit of extra text to make more sense.

I won't even pretend to understand what a Sylph of Space is, but I'll very nearly always give a virtual smile to a fellow INFP. I feel like I have a tendency to want depth and intensity in my relationships, and I simultaneously get very clingy and attached, but at the same time intermittently withdraw from the other person because I need my own space, and I worry about how to communicate that without seeming standoffish or jeopardising how they perceive me. I always wonder how much is too much, and generally spend too much time in my own head. I suppose in the end it is a boundaries problem. Trying to get better about it, but still. There's also a clear difference between the initial rush of finding a kindred spirit and the maintenance of a friendship or relationship over an extended period of time after the dust settles. A very patient friend has helped me to learn more about the latter, as looking back I have - intentionally or not - treated them quite poorly at times. I don't have many concrete answers, but they tend to be different from person to person anyway, so I'll wish you the best in finding yours.

This is exactly what I need. For a few days now I have been seeing that I'm hungry many times in a day even though I was already full. So watching this video made me know what it actually was. Thank you

It's not just about love like in a romantic way, I don't even know if it's an emotional or attention hunger. But I always Imagine scenarios where I get hurt or anything and then my friends take care of me. I used to imagine it just for fun or to sleep but now I feel like it may be a psychological thing. Am I wrong?

I started getting better when I found real friends. We share our whole selves with each other all the time and I found after I was getting that part of me much more satisfied, I found that I wasn't "falling in love" with people that treated me like a human being. Unfortunately, that meant I was no longer interested in the person I was with anymore.

I think that for my last relationship, I wasn’t aware of how bad my emotional hunger had gotten over the years and it really was a slow burn to a very sad end to the relationship. I was constantly thinking I wasn’t sufficient enough for my partner who was simultaneously projecting a lot of insecurities onto me and kinda stress-testing my ability to give in the relationship. I eventually cut ties with all of my friends because I thought that focusing on the relationship and “fixing” myself would make her happy. I couldn’t see past my own mental and emotional roadblocks and it really harmed the both of us in the end. We don’t really speak anymore, but I hope she’s alright. She and I both deserve better and I just hope we end up growing and finding the peace in ourselves we wanted.

I recently realized that, for years upon years, I've been subconsciously (and mildly) manipulating people for the love I can't seem to give myself, but I don't know why I can't love myself. And this "emotional hunger" never stopped me from loving others, it just randomly drained them at times. I still do it sometimes, though I try really hard not to.
