Hi friends! 💖IT'S MY BIRTHDAY so as a birthday present, please drop your favourite sparkly emoji in your comments! 🥰 And again: SO sorry about the audio! Also, remember: this is such an incomplete list! These are just some of the easiest, simplest, cheapest ones we could think of! A complete list would take an hour or more. Drop other ideas in the comments, too!

At Savonlinna Opera Festival, I was a stunt double for one of the performers suffering from double vision due to brain damage. There was a scene where he and some others were going to do a parade walk in capes and masks, so he had no way to walk in sync with the rest of the group on that uneven medieval castle floor. There are all kinds of ways to make it work. Thank you for another informative and fun video. I have a little opera collective of my own now, and I hope we can at least take some of these improvements with us.

That's amazing - so excited to hear you may be able to use some of these! :) And that you were able to make it work for that other performer, too - it always turns out that there are ways to make it work, if people put their minds and hearts to it!

@@robinhahnsopran Openness about disabilities and willingness to work around them is the key. Last season at Svenska Teatern in Helsinki, we had a play all in Swedish sign language, audio narrated in Finnish, surtitles in Swedish and Finnish, the mute and blind had all their personal interpreters. In the lobby we had miniatures of the sets, and dolls wearing stage costumes, so the blind could touch and feel what everything looks like. Happiest theater guests ever 😊 ❤️

Yay, you're back! Another thing I would add would be to be respectful of people's specific needs, particularly if they have a non-physical or at least "invisible" disability (e.g. autism). TL;DR, don't be a meanie! I had a screaming meltdown yesterday, and I'm still really scared of ruining my vocal cords, though these happen rarely for me. Anyway, happy birthday! Also: the return of Borb!

Absolutely! Hard agree: every space should be working to create a culture where disabled people feel safe when having a flare, episode, or anything else! So important :) Also: thank yoooou!

*singsongs* Iiiii wouldn't be doing music/shows still if not for the less-dense rehearsal schedules 🎶 (at first due to needing to work, and now due to general dipped energy levels)

Right?! It's genuinely amazing how much more accessible the arts can be just with a few more days in between rehearsals!

More great reasons for more accessible opera spaces: lots of fans are elderly!! Which comes with lots of new disability and immune-compromising.

This, so much! 💚 Making space for the older folks we know love opera means making the space more accessible! You're so right :)
