The best opera singers could have their voices carry throughout the theatre all the way to the back of the gods, by singing on a whisper. No microphone. Decades ago, microphones in performances were often for recording only. It was only as beautiful but less strong voices were popularised that microphones were used for volume. There used to be singers who didn't need any gadget to ensure they could be heard loud and clear at the back.... and because they often sang on a whisper they didn't deafen those close to themselves.

If you know nothing or very little about one of the greatest artists of 20th century you will like Maria the movie. But for myself as an adoring fan and someone who spent days watching, analyzing every move and note and you study singing and love opera and bel canto this is just terrible. I also can not understand why focus on sad last days and not enjoy the life of primadona from the highs to the lows. Just the lows-acting is poor and A. Jolie is not even aprox. Of Callas in any way. The only who could to justice to Madame Callas might be Marly Streep...As this stands this movie is a grand disappointment. 50years after her final recital and this is the best they could do. Shame.

I loved the movie. Beautiful. It won’t be a blockbuster obviously. Won’t appeal to the masses, which is a good thing to me. I consider it an art movie and will be watching it again soon. Thanks for the video.

I wanted to like this yet I couldn't. Maria Callas, La Divina, La Callas was an Exceptional Talent and deserved more than a "Fake telling of her last week of life". This type of film making is Lazy. Lazy in the way of None of it is True therefore B.S.. So exactly what is the point? History is intact, solid, Recorded. Making Crap up because the Director/Writer can't be bothered to do actual research and deliver an Honest Portrayal of an Incredible woman of Immense talent is so Lazy and Disrespectful. This is why the Film Industry is Failing. No Truth. Especially when covering History. Epic Fail. Angelina Jolie gave a meh performance. I actually laughed out loud at the beginning scene, bad lyp synching, especially that lip quiver. This Movie is Crap. Watch "Maria by Callas" if your Truly interested in her and Truth because it's in her own words.... Not Made Up B.S..

Enjoyed your review. I watched Maria last night. I think Angelina Jolie is a fine actor, however, I would have gone another way. I would have liked to have seen more of the passion and, as you mentioned, more realistic body movements of an opera singer-especially one like Callas. Not always coming from the throat but the lower body and the more physical intensity of a singer of her "class" as in gravitas/grandeur (and not just the quiet despair of her thoughts and the others around her.

Jolie has stated that she DID NOT lip sing. She sang throughout.

The movie bored the living daylights out of me. It said in 2 hours what it could have said in 10 minutes. We get it. She was losing her voice and she was addicted to pills and she was alone. Blah blah blah. I literally fell asleep three times trying to get through this snooze fest. To be fair, this is nothing to do with Angelina Jolie. She did her best, but what a crappy script written by a 10-year-old for a school play project.

I watched with my daughter a few days ago. I thought it was crazy to have someone who took a few singing lessons play Maria Callas, perhaps the best opera singer of her day. Just the warped situation in movie-making and music now. I ended up not hating the movie. I felt badly for Callas without ever feeling good for her and reacted by listening to the movie Judy with my daughter the next day. At the end of Judy, my daughter was in tears. And she scolded me because the emotional toll compared to Maria was a lot more. I'm going to note that Renee Zellweger sang herself. Though not Judy Garland, Zellweger has her own singing chops.

So stupid, when we have modern Ottelo where the Kaufman screaming from scene in soldier custom. You think it's buetiful, you think it's opera? No it isn't, when you thinking about success and don't think about culture, it's not music it's Shetty pop comercial full of money "success🤑". But I'm agree with you, that we should do it access, but not Shetty and pop without any sens and culture.

First of all, there is a plot: the last few days of her life. That’s the plot. It’s a biopic of her life. Secondly: she wasn’t a theatre actor. She was an Opera Legend. They are separate.

I use glow and go canes. They have some nice patterns and glow in the dark handles and are collapsible which is great on airplanes and when travelling. I have been looking for a dressier cane too so I might get one of those. I’ve been considering a wheelchair. A cane helps my balance but I still can’t handle walking as much as you do. I have been avoiding going places where I have to walk far. I’m afraid to ask my doctor though.

Ooh, those do sound lovely, too! :) Ooof, the fear when it comes to a big shift in mobility aids is real, and something nondisabled people often don't think about. The fear of ableist doctors' responses, the fear of dismissal, the fear of the gatekeeping and denial along the way, the fear of even uttering the words out loud that make it real... it's a lot. Whether you do or don't ask, I support your choice 100%, and hope that one way or another you're able to get the freedom and mobility support you deserve - genuinely 💖

I have AFOs too which help but it’s like my body runs out of gas and everything hurts after a bit of walking. EDS is so strange the way it differently affects us.

I just saw the Maria and it gave me different prospective when the singer or famous people lost thier capabilities to perform again , we should not critize or judge them as they already suffering from inside for thier life change from the pedestal to nothing , And mostly other not knowing what they going through as they like to keep thier toe back to pedestal And this movie is about after doctor talked to her 7days before she died remind me of other singers , lost thier capabilities to sing as they used to be , like Whitney, some still with us like Celine Mariah, and soon on,, we should appreciate them more even now they cannot sing as they used to be.. Angelina Maria film maybe not much but ,, hell !!! Angeling acting is superb,,, as how you delivered your dialog is struck our hearts .. congratulations Oscar deserve your acting and dialog

I watched Maria last night, and was so moved. I lack the words to fully explain how deeply Jolie's portrayal resonated with me. But just wow. I'm so excited to watch it again. This is such an excellent, nuanced review. I do see a plot in the film myself, but see why you dont see one. I think the plot isnt immediately apparent because of the conclusion of the film. Many movie plots revolve around a chafacter's deepest desire and whether or not they will attain it. I see that type of plot here, and ultimately the conclusion was no, Callas won't. 💔

every interview i have watched, angelina jolie has said she learned how to sing for this, and she wore an ear piece and they mixed their voices together. she might have not used all of maria’s visible techniques but i believe she was singing with classical technique. i think this conversation also begs the question “was maria callas’ tension specifically in her neck, healthy, and she pedagogically correct?” i love maria callas and am an avid fan…but we can’t have it all in every artist…and every body/voice is different. I don’t think all of jolie’s singing shots were particularly *beautiful or pretty. they were raw, and what i would expect from an opera singer today on stage.

love this video but i do have questions- so i don't understand anything about music or opera. when you say there's a MUAH muscle worked- i would have liked to see what you mean, merge a video where you sing yourself and show us that. when you say she's not faded but a student- show us examples of a faded and try to be more specific. it's so interesting and You Are the pro- so for me when you talk about specifics like these... as a watcher that knows nothing i would find those in depth + examples more interesting and precise. love the video regardless!

You really filmed this unprepared did you????? Angeline DID NOT LIPSYNCHED, she sang LIVE throughout the film. There wasnt any prerecording, its all live with accompanying piano. Ofcourse, the final audio is mixed and remastered, final sound may not be fully Angeline. But the point is, Angeline did not lipsynch during the filming, lipsynch is when you only move your lips along with the audio, but not actually singing it. But Angeline SANG it live with live music/instrument. and there was no PRERECORDED sound at all. Watch the interview with the whole sound director, sound mixer, etc the line of producer and sound director. Please give credit where its due.

Your vehemence is commendable but misplaced. All the great singing in the movie is Maria Callas. Where the singing is that of Callas in the last week of her life, that's mostly Angelina with a few Callas phrases artfully woven in. This is not to disparage Angelina Jolie in any way. For a non operatic singer to be able to sing as she did after just a few months of study is amazing, just to say the very least. But all it can possibly hope to do is to bring you up to an amateur level. Moreover, she can't actually even sing at her best, as she's portraying a dying woman. This is not to say that Angelina didn't do a magnificent job. She absolutely did! But it takes a lifetime of hard work and stage and life experience to reach the level of Callas. In fact only one person ever did...

I saw Maria Callas in person. This film felt like a long afternoon at the wax museum. The visuals and editing were the best and the casting was good, but surely Onassis had more charm. The scene with JFK was totally gratuitous. This was a wasted opportunity.
@caddiebrown85653 күн бұрын
I agree completely. The film was painfully slow. Almost like a very long photo-op of Jolie. Wonderful cinematography, design, costuming and sound. The flashbacks were far too few. Jolie simply didn't have enough training to understand the physical demands of Bel Canto. Neither could Jolie capture the mystery of everything about Callas. Helmut Berlinger is magnificent and especially natural in the role of Onassis. I am very very old and a former member of the Dallas Civic Opera company.

I love your passion and that you enjoyed the movie and that you're obviously an Angelina Jolie fan just like I am. It is very clear that you're not an opera person. A lot of the time we're hearing the voice of Maria Callas. Nobody before or after her ever could sing like Callas. So it's no disgrace that we hear a Callas recording while watching Angelina on screen. In some scenes they cut between Callas singing on stage and Angelina in the studio. There you can hear the difference between the two voices. 😮

Thank you for your review! Thank god "Callas" is on Netflix so I'm able to rewind scenes. I was following the movie quite intently, then I must have blinked and then Callas is walking around and being interviewed by some guy named Mandrax. Wait, what? Isn't Mandrax her pills? I'm so confused, then I realized, "Ohhhh, this is all happening in her head!" Then, my head start to ask a lot of questions. Did Maria Callas speak with an British accent? Much like Madonna spoke during her Guy Ritchie phase. Why is Angelina speaking like that? Maria Callas was American! All in all, it's kind of a disappointment. Better they made a theatrical version of Terence McNally's "Master Class." That would be more intriguing! Or better yet, "The Lisbon Traviata!" It doesn't have Callas as an actual character, but it is all about Callas or rather a supposed bootleg copy of her performance of "La Traviata" in Lisbon.

Callas had an international style to speaking. Not in the sense of a British accent particularly. Google an interview and you will see. Was definitely not an American accent
