This is a true story my dad told me: one of his friends would travel around most of Europe, and occasionally Germany. His friend was only in Germany for that day, and decide to have fun. He went to three or some bars, and then he was a little drunk walking on the streets. As he was walking, a man went up to him and told him follow him. My dad's friend, being drunk, followed him and he was led into a on underground hole in some random place. As he was going down, he was gaining back his conscience and he said he saw pretty unexplainable creepy things and he tried to run out but the guys stopped him and grabbed him. I'm not sure how but he somehow escaped, and he later was lost somewhere in Europe. My dad said no one really knows what happen to him.

When you think more about it, it might actually be a pretty sustainable future!

Look up Mike Reynolds, Earthships. Or Nadir Khalili's Earthbag building or ceramicists buildings, in S. CA, USA. VERY nice semi-underground houses. They use the tools of war, or refuse: woven sandbag materials + barb wire + cement + dirt from site; or earth-stuffed old tires....and no, once the tires are encapsulated in the cement stucco, the earthships are safer than most regular houses...that is, they should be safe for even those with severe multiple chemical sensitivities.

I'd live in an underground house. Actually, I think humanity should just be moved into underground cities. That would clear masses of land like Manhattan where new forests could be planted. We atone for the sins of our ancestors and us today by living underground.

good idea, but its damn near impossible

Hakop Ekizyan I know, but hey, if some of us move underground and plant trees on the surface, that's already benefiting nature.

NaughtyShrink Well, no. It's damn near impossible because of different terrain types and the shear amount of humans. Otherwise, I'd be a cool thing. Basically, we'd all live in RPG dungeons and dwarven cities.

xXInfXx I think you got it, right there. The keyword is "otherwise". But really, this is just semantics, serves no real purpose :P Have a good life.

Thinking about large numbers of folks who live mostly underground without light, I can't help but think about the way seasonal affective disorder works--the need of the body and mind for enough sunlight. I wonder about the toll this alone take on the mental health of the unhoused tunnel people of Los Vegas.

In NY there were... generations... They sent in the army / nat'l guard to rescue the kids.. then they took them to Samaritan's Purse hospital in Central Park for treatment. That was why The Comfort was docked there for about a month... They supplied the servicemen.

Well, actually, the reason why parisian catacombs are so strictly forbidden is the very high risk of flooding in parts of the tunnels. It has already occurred in the past that some corpses would be added to the older ones...

In regards to the catacombs, the French believed the bodies in the cemetery were causing the milk and wine to spoil which is why they moved the bodies. I've been to them a good 5-6 times.

YaoDong means kiln cave, originally used for making bricks, for some unknown reason, the locals found it suitable for living so they decided to live in them instead of regular houses.

Yaodong dwellings are reminiscent of "earth ships". Houses built largely using dirt, they too maintain a pleasant temperature year around, and have little to no heating or cooling requirements or maintenance. Many choose to build them using recycled materials as well.
