I live near Lead, and damn it's pretty fucking wild what innovation came from the pollution of White Creek. Cyanide was apparently a chemical needed to extract gold from ore... The rivers were destroyed, yet recently because of scientific discovery the river now has fish and vegetation once more. By the way it's pronounced "leed," not "lead."

I feel it is important to note on the Milgram experiment that a few of the "teachers" asked about liability. They didn't want to be legally responsible for any sort of harm done to the "learners". It was brought up in one of my psych classes and I feel like it changes things a bit.
@FeelinStoney4208 жыл бұрын
For those who don't know, 297mg of LSD is an INSANE dose. A normal dose for a human is 1,485-2,970 times smaller. (100-200 micro-grams)
@mnb1348 жыл бұрын
Agree, they should have started with a smaller dose, so it doesn't die of overdose. 10mg probably would be more than enough.
@FeelinStoney4208 жыл бұрын
I think 500ug would be plenty for a starting dose, but I don't see why they would give an elephant LSD in the first place.

They dosed the elephant again after it "keeled over" then overdosed the poor fucker with tranquilizers, so to say the experiment was flawed is an understatement. Some dumbass scientists.
@SueMead8 жыл бұрын
This was a particularly good episode. I've discussed the Milgram and The Stanford Prison experiment with many people, at length. So many people said that they would always stop the experiment. They'd argue that they'd never be able to be co-erced into such sadistic behaviour. We will never know if their claims are true but my guess is that now, people would behave even more sadistically. Look at what we see on t.v. or for some people, in the street. What the cops gets away with, just because they're in a uniform. There's a lot more I could say but you've all probably fallen asleep so..., zzz.., zzzzzzz...
@vicr1238 жыл бұрын
Should've kept going... Oh well, now that you've stopped... zzz... :P
@alexanderelsen93978 жыл бұрын
+Sue Mead Interestingly the same experiment was carried out in Britain afterwords and everything was fine. It's just cause it's america and Americans get indoctrinated into a certain mind set that makes them more corruptible when given power. I don't believe this consequence of indoctrination is intentional. Not saying all Americans are like this, just saying they're fighting an uphill battle.
@SueMead8 жыл бұрын
Alexander Elsen I had wondered about the cultural side of this.The Stanford Prison experiment wouldn't stand up from a sample size perspective.
@ablationer8 жыл бұрын
+Sue Mead I don't think the Milgram experiment would yield the same results nowadays, not with authority figures anyway. People don't trust cops and doctors anymore. That said, the French did something similar recently but with a famous pop star instead and a fake gameshow, and boom, worked like a charm.

@Katrina_NYC8 жыл бұрын
It's the sheer number of people we have in one of the largest countries. NYC has more people in our city, than whole countries do. Of course you have countries with many more people in them such as India and China but it's because their systems don't work the same. I have friends who come from countries where criminals not only run free, but run the government themselves. My friend who came here from Bangladesh said that her family escaped there to Iran before coming to America because criminals ran so much of the government that the mob gangstas will just cut off citizens electricity or water supply if they don't pay for protection. Not saying our jail system isn't flawed. But with higher punishment rate for crimes, and a large population it's bound to be a big number.

Thoughty2 You forgot to say an important thing about the Milgram Experiment: the experimenter was continuously saying to the teacher that the responsability of what was happening wasn't of the teacher, so the teacher didn't have to worry of his actions That's the core of the experiment

The 1st one, the Stanford Experiment, is rather interesting. As I'm studying psychology, this was one of the more interesting experiments I've ever read about. It's simply, in psychology-terms, called the "Lucifer-effect". Zimbardo stated that it is, according to this, very hard to be kind and show empathy, when the environment is designed different., in this case it allows the guards to treat the prisoners very badly. So the fact that the guards started enjoying punishing the prisoners more and more, is actually a normal scenery in situations like this. It is a way for us humans to "fit in" and simplify our living so it fits the environment as good as possible.

I studied the Stanford Prison experiment and Milgram's obedience experiment for Psychology GCSE when I was 15 and I seriously found it interesting as it blurred the line between our morals and showed me how grey the world is.

What a lot of people don't know is that during the Stamford Prison Experiment is that the guards were encouraged to be as abusive as possible, even offered bonuses for cruelty. The whole ordeal was invalidated because he wanted to artificially inflate his results.

I knew about the first one on this list due to the fact that they did an episode in similar fashion for 'American Dad' quite recently and I ended up doing a Google search in order to see whether a similar experiment had ever taken place and low and behold, now I find a video from you on the exact subject of something I researched - not even a month ago! :D Dark matter makes up 95% of all elements and Carbon makes up 95% of all elemental make up - So either of those two would be correct, to the answer of: "What makes up the majority of the universe..?"

14:00 This quote is strangely akin to that of Barbossa in Pirates of the Caribbean 3 where he says ‘For certain you have to be lost to find something that cannot be found, else everyone would know where it is.’

One correction regarding the Stanford Prison Experiment. At no point during the experiment were participants told they could not actually leave. There was an occasion when a participant appeared to want to leave, but at no point did they actually ask to, and after being spoken too, they demanded that they be let back into the experiment. A point which received a lot of interest in the book on the experiment "The Lucifer Effect". Apart from that, a very good video.

Also, it's important to note that in the Milgram Experiment, the teacher, was not actually a teacher but the name given to the participant in that role. They were actually just normal people, with students not being allowed to take part.You may also find in interesting that they repeated a similar experiment with men and women electrocuting a dog, and found that more women were willing to go to the full voltage compared to men.

Hey @Thoughty2 For the experiment on the "teacher" and "learner" one, they made a movie based on that experiment (2015) called Experimenter It's also on Netflix (:
