Great video! Just found your channel. My husband and I are morning our French departure and return to the US this past Saturday. I had to avoid my local Publix (in FL too) for a few days because I couldn't bear to see someone shuffling around in pajama bottoms and slippers. French fashion for me is always a confidence booster. It's great to see someone in their '60s '70s and even '80s rocking lace dresses , classic denim jeans, and gorgeous lip shades.

I felt the same way lol! I wanted to avoid the deflated feeling I had when I saw people wearing bikinis and flip flops into grocery stores. So glad you enjoyed this video and thanks so much for the comment!

10:30 that backpack is her daughter’s school bag. In French we call it “cartable”: it’s very recognizable for its rectangular, horizontal shape; its big cover flap with a buckle fastening and hand strap; and accordion-like compartments. The mother’s own bag is likely the pink tote bag that pokes out on her left. No grown woman wears a “cartable” as a backpack, especially not with graphics, lol! The only adults I’ve seen use it were some of our school teachers, who would either carry it by the hand strap, or slung up on their shoulder with a proper cross-body strap. And it’s always either black or dark brown, never even a brighter blue or red. It’s just NOT a fashion accessory in France-at least until now. It’s too professional/stiff-looking if worn the adult way. It’s heavily coded as childish if worn as a backpack, too. And it’s simply not flattering: adults will pick vertical-shaped backpacks any day. In fact, many teachers who were not into this old-school professional aesthetic wore regular/sportsy backpacks to carry their documents in. Btw, lots of women in Paris do wear leggings in the daytime, but maybe it’s a different socioeconomic category of people whom you [don’t] see much in those nice neighborhoods ;)

As an expat living in Norway I can confirm the general impression that you won't see lounge-wear in public. My friends and husband are totally against this in general and insist on changing clothes if you leave the house. I cannot even stop at a cafe for coffee after a walk if I am in training clothes. It took a long time to be used to it but now I am on board and follow the rules and always am thankful that I don't feel underdressed and well 'sloppy' when out in public. Although I always forget the makeup and can regret not putting on mascara ! Although in general the makeup is the opposite of the states, like low key and natural and hardly ever do you see foundation in use - unless you are under 18 and obsessed with trying to be influencer )

I have just have had your channel recommended to me, as a British European i find your observations very interesting. I had a weeks holiday in the eastern Algarve at the end of June. There were a lot of flipflops being worn, over sized tee-shirts/beach cover-ups. So i guess it depends on the region you are in. Certainly when I have been to Spain and been into the cities in the daytime the type of clothing is very different to the beach resorts.

As my style is classic and tailored I am constantly looking for ways to pull off a more casual look. So this was very helpful and practical. I have just bought a pair of red pants so that will definitely be one of my looks when I travel. I am also pleased that crossover bags are in as I have sloping shoulders and so any other kind of bag keeps sliding off my shoulder. Cobblestones are difficult to walk on I found. They sound romantic but can be dangerous and more so if it is raining. Can’t wait for part 2.

I would say that the British women seemed to be wearing more layers and the styles looked less summery where we were because it was cooler, but the overall aesthetic is different except among the very young. Teens and women in their early 20s have a totally different style, but everywhere we went I saw chic outfits similar to these, but with sleeves. :)

One of the photos looks like she had a fanny pack slung over her shoulder, as if it was a crossbody purse. I think it's fine to do this because these people are out and about. None of these women are dressed that differently. You're right, no leggings and no PJ looking clothes like some Americans do here. I didn't see tattoos, baggy shirts, or USA wear (thank god) when I was in Europe. You're right, most people who you see in Europe, out and about, don't look like Americans do when they are out. When I was in France, I noticed many, many people are out walking, so there are not many obese people. If you did see obese people, there were usually Americans. However, many people smoke in France, which was surprising to me. It's always good to visit other countries to see how people are, other than here. So many people don't realize how wonderful that is.
@arlenewitt248
@arlenewitt248 Жыл бұрын
I live in N. California and am retired. The fashions you showed were much more casual than what I wear for the most part. I noticed that for the most part, these European women would blend in here in my part of the world except for the fact that many Americans go for a more tattooed look, which looks low class when over done as a good look doesn’t get better when there is too much of it. Also, European women seem to have the same problem as American women in matching up their bras with their tops so their bras don’t show, which is tacky. It seems to me after watching videos like this over the years, the difference between European attire and and American attire has decreased given the exposure of the women in each country to what women in other countries are wearing. For example, I remember seeing a video about 10 years ago on what not to wear while visiting Paris and it said “Don’t wear sneakers as they’re not worn in Paris.” Now everyone seems to wear them. I think people in your position as a fashion advisor, who are watched globally, have decreased the differences in fashion worn by women from different countries. Do you agree?

These fashion ideas are great, thanks! But the concept of Europeans dressing so much better than in folks from some other countries (particularly US citizens abroad) is kind of a trigger for me. I have lived and traveled a lot for over 30 years in areas of Southeast Asia, Mexico, and Central and South America. The way visiting tourist Europeans dress in some so-called "less developed" countries is just jaw-droppingly bad. And not just in beach towns. I'm not talking about less than stylish sneakers or sports caps. I'm referring to almost complete nudity, everywhere, transparent dresses with no under garments, thongs on city streets, even complete lack of hygiene. European subtle or expressive style doesn't always make it out of Europe. It gets left at home, sadly sometimes along with general respect for the local culture.

Nada I enjoyed your video but what I noticed is that the way they're dressed is how people in America dressed in the 50s, not that I was doing it because I was a toddler. BUT I remember pictures I saw of how my mother dressed. whyat I think has changed in America is that people are overweight and obese and so they have no choice but to wear oversized t-shirts and baggy type trousers of some sort or sweats or leggings which I always thought she'd only be won by a trim person but actually have noticed extremely overweight women also wear leggings and let everything hang out. So I actually think it's more a factor of Americans not being in shape and actually I don't blame Americans because our food is inferior to European food and I could give you many details but this is not a health channel so I won't bore you with that. I myself like the 50s hourglass styles and so I tend to like everything that you've shown although I would never call it elegant; I would call it practical and tailored and it could go anywhere. I actually have many many outfits that I think r much more elegant than what I've seen here but where I live no one dresses that way and so I dress down in order not to stand out in this teeny town. I also noticed you mention you're from Florida and I used to live in Florida. I now live the central part of America andmore recentlyI have collected a lot of leggings that I adore because they're in impressionistic colors and prints and I wear them with tunics that give me a shape. THEY are NOT just square but they do cover almost completely the buttocks and my hips which is nice because I do have small love handles due to age. I dress with tunics matching in some way, shape or form the colors of the kegging and the impressionistic abstract look as well. I feel like it's a work of art😊 I could only show you what I mean. I can't really describe it better than that but I do realize that everyone who presents podcasts for us about fashion hate leggings but if they only saw my leggings and my tunic tops that I coordinate, they would see how cute they can be especially on certain body types. I have small legs and small hips and a very full bust and I'm over 50 so my hourglass shape has changed a lot but with that tunic, I emphasize my small and hips and legs and the tummy and love handles are pretty much NOT disclosed at all ☺️ so I love it. I can see you are a very classy lady and my guess is you do dress elegantly. I would though if I were you create little wispy bangs because I think that would better show off the pretty shape of your face and contrast with your long curly hair. Just a thought.😉

Thanks for showing good dressed Germans. I am so sick and tired of the "Germans have no style"- narrative. Yes, we are very outdoorsy people and will always choose functionality over fashion, and there are some "style deserts", but on general people express themselves with fashion too. And there are big differences between regions. Berlin stands for super edgy/dark looks, Hamburg is very preppy and a bit quiet luxury, Munich is more colourful rich, Stuttgart would be more minimalist "no nonsense"....
