It's a good idea to memorize the order that vulnerabilities are listed in. That makes it easier to figure out an enemies remaining vulnerabilities after finding one.

Therions actually the best to start with. Savescum and steal good stuff in towns. And he can open purple chests so you dont have to go back later

I can use scholar as a secondry job and I don't remember i think it is Primrose... The two abilities where you have to make a choice is terressa or Therion and it is a very difficult choice so I picked Therion but i will give her the Merchant job to compensate for her absence...

You can get post-victory bonuses if you perform the following tasks (10% bonus): *Untouchable* : Extra Money if you didn't get hurt in the entire battle. *Break* : Extra EXP if you inflict Break on an enemy. *Domination* : Extra JP if you win on the 1st turn.

Sorry but something I think that should be added I believe you must break all the foes you encounter in order to earn the Break bonus. (Just got the Sorcerer class and with it I've not broken all my foes before they die and the ones who are breaked doesn't appear to give the bonus.

Idk if anyone else noticed this, but I think the order of the vulnerabilities is the order they are in the equipment screen. So say if an enemy has a vulnerability to daggers and it appears first in it's vulnerability boxes then you can know for a fact it isn't vulnerable to swords. I may be wrong, but just what I noticed.

Yes, I noticed that too. I haven’t tracked the order of the magic vulnerabilities, but they always come after the weapons and I think it’s something like Fire-Ice-Wind-Light-Dark (probably missed some).

Pro tip: once you select your starting character, you wont be able to change them out of your active party until you complete their story. I'd recommend starting off with Ophilia or Tressa so you get a dedicated healer right off the bat, or constant income respectively.

Pick Therion for your party and do save-scumming for good gear early. Even in later towns it's still OP. You won't ever have to spend money on gear.

1:40 his study only reveals 1 vulnerable for every enemy, if the enemy same species, it only reveals one. in this battle, shows twice because the previous battle the light vulnerable is already revealyed, then the sign "Study Foe" appears and cyrus reveals the dagger

I know it's been 4 years now since this video was released, but I also discovered something Octopath Traveler is different from other JRPGs: you still get EXP from captured enemies and also can get the item drop even though you used Steal with Therion.

Olberic as a thief is really good for duelling npcs, who often have good loot behind the door they block He starts with good attack and makes the hp/mp stealing more efficient even without the passive that increases the steal numbers

I started off with Alfyn because he was a witch doctor/apothecary. I figured since this is my first time playing a real game outside of Mario and Sonic games, Alfyn would be easy to start off in case I got hurt a lot. And for the most part, I was right. Alfyn was easiest (in my opinion) to start with because his first boss wasn’t too tough. I’m still playing the game and right now I’m going in order. I picked up Therion next. His first boss was also relatively easy as well. I have just defeated my third members first boss (H’aanit) and am now coming to the heart wrenching decision of picking out my four main party members.

JRPG NOOB TIPS: On my first journey to find the second party member, I have been trying to flee from any enemy which I don't have a way to break their shield. Helped keep me alive long enough to reach the next town. Pay attention to how much XP points you need to level up. This is important because your HP and SP will be refilled every time you level up, allowing you to save your potions. Also if you know you will level up from the next fight or two, you can go crazy with your skills because your SP will refill itself.

Anamana! Yeah makes sense. I ve beat all chapter 1 and gathered all travelers. I m on 1st ch 2 mission. Tressas mission. Did alil lvl grinding. I have Primrose, Olberic lvl 26. Tressa lvl 25. Then i had Allyn lvl 23 as he was last i unlocked and just kept him. I guess u gotta do a lvl grind for everyone each chapter.

That should be the basics. It seems like each area has a strong monster or two. Haven’t looked into how much they yield, been collecting them for H’aanit when I see them. But Caits definitely give massive EXP, Leaves/Gold and JP

I believe Therion is the best character to start with. Why? There will always be chests inside caves and dungeons that require a thief to open it. You will kick yourself for not bringing a thief when you're right in front of these special chests.

1:45 I think they patched it out now, Cyrus won't learn weaknesses additively anymore when multiple of the same enemy appear. But still a really strong starter.

yeah, there’s no HP visible but you can see an enemy’s max HP and current HP at the top of the screen if you Analyse them. i miss it most of the time though cause it’s only on the screen for a split second and I’m focused on the weaknesses instead

Is there anything that can be done to raise Cryus' Scrutinize ability success rate? Does his level influence the percentage? Anything that can be done to increase the number of failed attempts? I noticed sometimes if you've failed in a town prior to recruiting that town's character, it'll say "your reputation has been restored" in the top right corner once you start the new character's story.

What I know so far is that all skills improve with level, and higher level areas are more difficult. Also, some towns will have NPCs that have a scrutinize or inquire reward that increase success rate for different characters path abilities. For example, one town just gave me a boost to stealing with Therion. But, I’m still playing through and trying to understand it all. When I have a better idea, I’ll definitely make a guide on it.

Idk about danger lvl = appropriate lvl. I went into that cave near Cobblestone that's danger lvl 15 at lvl 16/17 and was still getting rheked by those elemental ghost things.

It’s light vs dark. Half the skills are the good approach and the other half are the frowned upon method. Stealing vs purchase for example.

Anamana! Ohhh that makes sense! Basically you take the good approach and you don't have to deal with lose of reputation. Maybe you are not far enough to know yet idk (I have about 6 hours in the game) but is there any reason to scrutinize over just talking to them with Alfyn? Like do you actually get a different ending or anything? Because with Alfyn you are guaranteed to get the info every time. I haven't gotten cyrus yet so idk if there is any reason to actually use him over the guaranteed Alfyn

The good versions tend to have a level requirement to do them, whereas the dark side you can do it with a chance of failure. So Alfyn or Olberic can do their actions at a certain level with specific NPCs, but Cyrus and H’aanit can do it, but if they fail, you get that negative reputation.

Side quests are more for gold and items. Chapter 2 areas tend to be lv25, Chapter 3 lv40+. Check the danger level in areas and keep pushing to stronger enemies. Always update your gear via steal/purchase or stores. Use the dancer skill Bewildering Grace for a chance at 2/5/100x EXP and JP.

They should do a full fledged sequel... This game missed out certain things they can definitely improve on certain aspects of the game.... Combat and music were superb... Sone stories were interesting some generic... All in all it was a good game... Just started my second play through... Is there a guide so I can pick up all the nuts and the side dungeons... Do you find save scumming cheapens the game? Or do you find the mechanics that encourage it poorly designed? Is it time wasted grinding vs time wasted reloading?

Save scumming involves to much work (for me at least). Once you are able to use Tressa well enough, money is never a problem. That way you can pay the tavern easily. However I just went to chapter 2 and noticed that the prices of the taverns get higher. But then I can rack up 70 000 in a very short time with tressa's skill.

I see save scumming as basically ignoring an intended Game feature. You are meant to not get all items with ease, it is meant to be a balance and it exists so that players either get super lucky, or later on grind for those items. Save Scumming just ignores percentages and basically ignores this big part of the game, at which point I feel like it is a certain disrespect towards the devs, who put so much thought and work into this feature. That said, I wouldn't shame someone who does this, as it is a time saver at the end of the day, and some people simply have better things to do with their time, than grind money constantly to get the Rep back up.

Basil-Leaf well I disagree. Im a old timer had a nes as a teenager. Loved RPGs this is simply how we played them. This term wasn’t back then. We didn’t really name it just saved and tried to get something and go back to the saved file until it worked and we got what we wanted. Magazines would recommend you do this as well it was simply how things worked. This whole ban players for exploiting is crazy to me that we’ve seen in games that happens. Now if they are using a 3rd party program or editing the game that’s a whole other issue. But if the devs messed up and some guy figured it out and used it to his advantage the. Good for him and devs program better. Players will always use in game items in ways the devs never intended it happens. How company’s react is what’s interesting. To me it’s not up to a gamer to worry about that. If it’s in game it should be free to use even if it’s not what they intended. If it benefits the players trust me they will fix it fast. If it hurts the players someday they will fix it. I’ve seen players so worried about getting band because they found a way to do something in game they weren’t sure the devs intended. Blah not me if it’s in the game it’s cool. If I ever got a ban doing something that’s in game then I wouldn’t be happy and if it’s not braking the UDL then the company will not be happy as well.

After playing with it some more, it's a mix of wearing the enemy down and stunning them too. Boosting will increase the chance on top of that.

I've been loving this game but I can imagine someone who never played an RPG in their life get destroyed in some bosses. also I hear a lot of bad rap from some people and it makes me wonder Is this game really THAT good or am I just blinded from the SNES RPG era?

It’s as good as a SNES era JRPG. Personal preference is not an absolute.

Nice loading is at menu screen I usually have 3 different save states just incase I need to go back

This isn't important, but I wish that when an enemy was captured, they didn't disappear off to the left, but towards the party to the right. Cuz you're not blowing them away, you're bringing them in. Like I said, it's not important, basically nothing meaningful, but it would look better and make more sense.

Idk if this game should have a guide. After i got cyrus the game completely changed..... The only advice i have is don't stack like heroes in a party. Primrose/ophelia.

It may change with sub-classes, though. It's starting to change again for me in Chapter 2.

Probably just how difficult it gets and focusing on breaking and vulnerabilities. Success chances of capture, steal and collect also drop quite a bit outside of Chapter 1 areas because they’re also based on level by the looks.

Allen there are essentially 4 main path actions but they're given different names. Ophelia and Primose both have the "make someone follow you" mechanic, but Ophelia's is "Noble", so there's no percentage, and Primose's is "Rogue" so there's a percentage. They're essentially opposites of each other. The same goes for the rest of the characters.

It gets muddy with subclasses. All the characters can be a thief, for example.

I'm not sure I'd say all of these are more general JRPG tips than they are for OT; I've played a decent number of older JRPGs, and a few newer ones, and haven't seen some of the OT mechanics.
