You've encouraged me to try strawberries again. I had 4 plants about 3 years ago. I was so disappointed they didn't produce and those that did disappeared to bugs. I mentioned to my daughter they were alot of work and I only got 1-2 berries. She then let me know on her watering days she was the "bug" eating my berries! She loved them and never told me! I'm putting them back in garden rotation!

Rofl, My kids are picking this year because my foot is broken. I have to wondering if it is the same. The ones that make it in are huge, but slightly underripe, and we arent getting nearly as many as last year even though the section that has been most productive so far didn't produce at all last year.

I love alpine strawberries, they're one of my favorite summer treats! We have a white variety that one of our old roommates gave us years ago, and this last winter I started a red variety from seed that was 11 years old! I wasn't really expecting them to germinate at all, but now I have a planter full of healthy little seedlings in the garden. Can't wait to taste them!

Looking forward to my harvest over the next few years 3x25 plant rows (75crowns ) . Sometimes variety matters a lot for taste maybe strawberries fall in this category since they are basically clones(crowns).

I have bird feeders nearby so I bag most with those little party favor mesh bags. Got 50 in a pack at Hobby Lobby for $3. A little time consuming but not bad and works perfectly. Gary, thank you for the strawberry video! I have a green stock vertical planter, my first one which I planted strawberry plants in this year pretty much all ever bearing. I had a lot of strawberries early on and they were looking great. Just want to confirm my thoughts based on your video, I thought that I needed to give them a good fertilizing in the spring so I actually used an organic granular fertilizer in each of the pockets. It seems like strawberry production stopped. I also may have been giving it a little bit too much water so I’ve gone to your recommendation of just checking frequently and if it’s drier than I’m watering otherwise I am, trying really hard to overwater. I’ve not done any liquid fertilizing and I won’t at this point since I gave a granular correct
@THERUSTEDGARDEN7 ай бұрын
If the leaves are green and growing you probably dont need any more fertilizer. I havent noticed feeding effecting fruiting. If the plant isn't flowering, it just might be bast that time and it would start again. I would do a basic baking soda spray or antifungal of your choice. Always test spray new sprays. I have videos on Baking Soda. Bare with my pruning questions, if you will, as I’m very new to gardening… but in regard to Everbearing, should I just cut the flower off, or like almost the whole stem where it comes from? Is it still a runner if it’s not touching the ground and going upward? And should that be pruned too? I appreciate anyone responding ❤ I first started pruning just the flowers, but think I saw a video where someone pruned almost the whole stem where it came from and then did the same to mine without thinking about the consequences it could have. Regardless, I’m gonna take it as an experiment and learning experience like most of my gardening
@THERUSTEDGARDEN7 ай бұрын
Well why are you pruning flowers off? I leave all mine. Would just let some plants go and watch them for your experiment. IF you want to remove flowers, I would remove the whole flower stem. Even if they are new plants I just let them grow. A runner will put out a solid 12 inch runner. There is usually a small plant on the tip. If you want new plants let them grow. If you dont, remove them. Good luck. Lots of gardeners have those nice big towers, but you are the only one who says where to get them. I have asked some of them. I tried getting some on eBay, but they were itty bitty table top (about 6 inches tall for 3 tiers) and no good for anything. Amazon does not say what sizes theirs are, at least none that I could find.

In your experience, do you think the top watering strategy of the greenstalks work well? It seems to me that most of the water just runs out the bottom through the center column. I'm not confident the under tiers get watered well enough without hand watering them individually. What do you think?

It is when it is cooler and plants are smaller. I water via the pockets as the plants get large. It's just the nature of growing vertically. Last year all my alpine strawberries died in the heat of summer. My whole yard is full sun. Did I put too many of the plants in each container and they couldn’t stay moist? I’m just wondering if anyone has had them survive all season in full sun.

Mine have survived some pretty brutal summers in full sun, and they're fairly crowded in their pot. They've gotten a little crispy now and then, but they've always survived. I just keep them mulched and well-watered. Thinking I might put some shade cloth over my new seedlings this summer.

Do they have to have a certain ph to grow better? I had bare root last yr. They never came back so I bought some from a local nursery. I'm in Stl. It didn't get super cold. Maybe when it's gets cold I should cover. I've grown before & never had issues until I bought bareroot. Any thoughts.

No specific pH. I keep mine uncovered 24/7. If it gets below 0 for extend periods, you might want to cover them. The Rusted Garden Vegetable Seeds & Home Garden Supplies: www.therustedgarden.com Earn 15% and become a TRG Affiliate for our seed & garden shop Sign Up Here: bit.ly/4aarkDD

So I've been watering my strawberries every day in my green stalk because I was afraid they would dry out in the heat being in a tower but sounds like that may be too much. Also, I notice you don't net to keep the birds out. I have mine netted. Don't you have a bird problem with your berries? I net my blueberries also.

He mentioned on another video that he had Seascape everbearing which is what I also bought last fall and have already harvested 3 pounds. I have one Greenstalk planter like his and have gotten a pound or so every few days. I'm in 7a about an hour east of Gary. A lady on another channel soaks them with 1/4 c. vinegar and 8 cups of water for 2 minutes, lets them dry 3 hours then places them in a mason jar in the fridge, stems in tact, and they're supposed to last for weeks. So far so good.
