I’m new to this, so I want to know, how do I know what notes to play if I’m accompanying a song ?
@PianoLessonwithWarren6 жыл бұрын
You first have to learn the chords to the song before you can accompany the singer. If you’re referring to playing a song that you’ve not rehearsed or played before, that’s a skill that comes a lot later when your ears and understanding of chords is a lot more developed
@georgehooper6702 жыл бұрын
Greetings, I was looking up how to play a piano to accompany a singer. I should have guessed as the basic is just play the chords dummy! One suggested if you cannot read sheet music fast enough read the chord letters above the staff with the notes and play them. Singers who also play the piano do it and with practice add their on embellishments. Others were technical with chord improvisations and reinforcement. Warren does a lot of that. Then I came across this 5 year old video actually with 7 tips. Playing a piano also sing and keep singing even if you are not a singer. Follow the singer not the singer following you. Don't play the melody of the song, that's the singer's job. Singers need the breathe, give them time and don't rush. Play runs and fills (embellish) when the singer is on long notes, or rest spots. Listen for dynamic changes and the overall "feel", mood and energy of the singer. Use passing chords and substitutions wisely and "tastefully". Then Warren with this soft, caring gentle personalty and with his singing or talking I'm impressed and cannot tell the difference. Warren told us everything slowly we need to do to become more than just accompanying a singer on a piano but create a picture in the mind of the audience. All we have to do is get our piano skills up to the task. Warren's singing voice also has interesting nuiances very close to Johnny Mathis but Columbia records made him a star with the sound engineering and a PR team promtions. One point was left out. How do you not get too emotional with the song to the point where it effects your playing? I have two songs in my life with "(somewhere) Over the Rainbow" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas". When beautifully played by others I cry. I can play them beautifully with passion and with an awesome vocalist I'll cry! I don't know why. Would it make for a better show with the audience seeing me crying? Thanks for this post and Merry Chriatmas in 2022.

When you say don't play the melody I don't get what your talking about when we play chords are we playing inversions instead? Before implementing things like drop 2 voicings?
@PianoLessonwithWarren3 жыл бұрын
Yes. When you’re accompanying a singer there’s no need to play the melody of the as as the singer already has the melody. Our job as the accompanist is to provide harmonic support via chords, and rhythms. You can also introduce counter melodies. Drop 2 just a type of chord voicing, has nothing to do with the rules of accompanying a singer.

Hi Warren cheers for the lesson. My question links also to your lesson where you said the melody should always be on top (furthest right note) when playing melody and chords together. So let's take jus the Cmajor triad, is it correct to say that Cmajor triad in root position, 1st inversion and 2nd inversion all sound ever so slightly a bit different because the top note (the melody) is different in the three cases even though it's the same triad. How does this phenomenon affect how one accompanies a singer?
@PianoLessonwithWarren7 жыл бұрын
ohlisto when accompanying the singer you don’t have to worry much about the melody as the singer is covering that, so you have more liberty to explore more chord voicing. When playing solo Piano where you’re responsible for the melody, the is when you make sure the melody is on top. The melody however will sometimes be non-diatonic notes and this is normal. Often times these non-diatonic tonic notes creates extension on the chords (ninth, sevenths, eleventh’s erc...) Did I answer your question? I

Hi Warren, When it comes to the singer's range and register, should the accompanist mostly stay out of that register? For example, my vocal range runs roughly from the C below middle C to the F above middle C. When deploying a piano accompaniment, should I mostly avoid playing any notes in those registers to leave room for the vocal? Are there times when it's appropriate to have a chord sustaining in the same register with some notes that double a vocal melody note (for example, where a melody may lean on chord tones)? In such a case, I often find there's some tension between my voice's desire to go to a just-intonated note vs the equal-tempered piano note. I've been looking all over for some kind of advice about working with and around the singer's range, but I haven't really found much out there, and I'm interested to know what sort of principles you deploy. Great channel, BTW!
@PianoLessonwithWarren6 жыл бұрын
zagugelblatz the piano tone and the vocal tone are very different so you don’t have to worry about register issue, you can playing in any register. You only need to think about register when playing with other instruments like guitars etc...

Enjoyed the video! When accompanying in this style is it generally not recommended to play in the same vocal range as the singer? Or is this not a problem depending on the situation?
@PianoLessonwithWarren7 жыл бұрын
Itzel Dunn no it’s not a problem, but as you can see in my demonstration, I’m using most of the registers of the Piano. This keep things interesting and complements the vocalist as his/her melody move through the different registers
