Piano teacher here. Bravo, Ali! 😃This is a splendid explanation of the basics for reading lead sheets. Glad you made it to inversions in Level 10- they are the key to moving beyond an elementary root position sound. Thanks for all the productivity vids, including this one 👍

You have no clue how much this is going to help me. I'm someone that knows how to play chords and I can read sheet music. However I could never figure out how to get past level 5. Every time I asked someone to tell me how they played and made it sound so natural, they just said it was just instinct and they couldn't explain it. Thank you for breaking it down in such a comprehensive way

As someone with over 20 years of music experience (that’s nearly 2/3 of my life) I find it really difficult to explain how you can pick up any instrument because I skip ahead and teach too much too soon. Thank you for showing that music theory doesn't have to be scary or intimidating for beginning musicians (especially adult beginners). By knowing how to construct triads (even knowing what a triad is), their inversions, what the "root of a chord" is, etc., you're not just regurgitating what a chord chart is saying so you can play the song, but also building a solid foundation for understanding how that song is constructed. From there you can move it to a different key that suits your voice better, play more interesting chords, etc. all because you put in the investment up front of learning basic theory. Congrats on the awesome playing and singing, it only gets better from here :)

I'm very impressed with how it all sounds, given its simplicity. I love the fact that I could soon be playing songs that I like without having to put in years of effort, while I build up other music skills (scales, music theory etc). I'd love to see what other piano related hacks that Ali could show us. Too many piano tutorials start off easy for about 30 seconds then take a massive leap in difficulty. Ali's tutorial was a nice gentle slope.

This video is amazing, Ali! I know it has a lot less views than your other stuff, but one major issue here is certainly that loads of people will not bother watching because most don't have a keyboard/piano and thus cannot apply what you're teaching here, whereby most have a computer/phone/iPad or wherever they watch your videos on and can be more productive. For those who have a keyboard/piano and are just starting out and want to learn more how to actually apply chords, this is an absolute gem! I'm just learning piano (again, or rather still) from the ground up and this is exactly what I've been looking for right now to keep me motivated and complement the more traditional approach and techniques. So please go on making piano videos and don't worry that some subscribers tune out for these.

Hi Ali - thanks so much for putting this video together and posting it. I have been a performing guitar player / singer for 50 years and have quite a good knowledge of music theory (although until recently I couldn't read notatin.. I wanted to start learning to play piano (keyboards) so I can do more as a performer. I have owned a few keyboards including a simple Yamaha portatone unit with many song/rhythm features but never really got around to really trying to learn piano. Now I'm retired I have the time. I have Dan Delaney's Play Piano in 6 Weeks or Less and Duane Shinn's 1 week course. Both of these are an excellent start for learning to read and play and each level of your video shows many of the same concepts. However I wanted to be able to accompany my singing with piano and although those courses are an excellent intro into playing SOLO piano, basically teaching the chords in the left hand /melody in the right they don't give any clues as to how to use it as an accompaniment tool. It is the singer who provides the melody so playing the melody at the same time as singing the melody would be near impossible at my level. Your explanation of the 10 steps to achieving this is fantastic and I can already see how to achieve my goals. Well done and thank you!

As someone who's been studying piano for a little over two years people underestimate the challenge that playing chord implies. It's not just about playlist the three or four notes on the chord & that's it, it's all about giving each note the same amount of treatment within their sound & be able to maintain it.

*This video was out of left field, but I loved it.* I've never actually attempted to learn to play any musical instrument but this video made it seem like a possibility. Here are some quick takeaways; - Playing piano and singing at the same time looks far more intimidating than it actually is. - Ultimate Guitar Chords is the best website - look for listings with high star ratings - Easy level is playing just one chord at one octave - Harder level is playing the chord at two different octaves at the same time - You can play octaves with either your left hand or your right hand - Minor chords sound sad, major chords sound happ(ier) - Stuff sounds better when your fingers are moving around less
