Great tips. I find that counting out the rhyrhm helps in many cased (especially with flamenco where the rhyrhm can be complex). I also find it helps to memorized going through backwards. After learning/memorizing a "tail" part (c) move on to (b) and connect, and so on.

Some of the best advice I’ve ever heard I have been playing for fifty years and learnt most of this the hard way

What would like to know is why can I play a song really good one day then really bad another. This drives me crazy at times. I love the video on tension and exercises for 10mins.

Great question! I am planning on covering this very common issue in a future video. Thanks so much! 🙏🏽🙏🏽

bet if you came back to the song after five days doing nothing you'd be shocked at the improvement

Je suis dans le cas aussi où je n’arrive pas à jouer deux fois la même musique sans rater au moins une note et jamais au même endroit en plus. C’est très frustrant ! Merci pour vos vidéo

Oh I needed this! Thank you. I use a practice journal - but I also use different sticky notes (different sizes different colours) to remind me of significant points the sticky notes /post-it notes go on the sheet music I am working on. One narrow one may remind me to be sure to place a certain finger very precisely (because I tend to forget and yest that careful placement will insure that a note in the next bar is correct. Other notes remind me to slow down, or use a metronome, or alert me as to when I began a piece. These notes are easy to place, easy to retire if whatever is on them is okay. One of my notes currently is to relax my death grip on my instrument to make the visual impression seem effortless and easy. Really good six points!

Excellent advice. I've meditated for years. 20 min right after waking and 15-20 in the afternoon is valuable to life!

Hey Diego I resonate a lot with your points here.. I read Anders Ericsson's book Peak about deliberate practice 2 years ago, and I'm now on my journey towards fingerstyle guitar mastery. Your science based videos on how deliberate practice applies to guitar learning on a practical level are just great. Thank you! Ruben

Smart words from a smart, experienced person

It's so important to be aware of your emotions when you pick up the guitar... I've struggled with this a lot. Nowadays I am trying to think about the guitar as an opportunity to meditate and get myself into the right headspace. And it's so much better. I slow down and get into the tone. And incredibly I find myself getting things right. It's an upward spiral. I think I would have made so much more progress over the years had I taken it slow and used the guitar to get into the right state of mind.

Well, what can I say? I think this is exactly what a lot of us need to hear, and very well put. As I said previously in a comment section, your videos have been a huge help on backing up, implementing, structuring and expanding what I had been discovering instinctively since I started seriously thinking about how to practice. The key point that sort of triggered it all for me is that I aim for my practice to be more benevolent, both psychically and physically. And also thinking that it could actually result in a more effective practice. As for meditation, I think this is the first time you clearly mention it, although it’s already been kinda present on the background, because most of the presented tools actually lead to mindfulness during the session. I also find meditation very useful to improve my state of mind while practising. I’ve long been trying to implement it in my day-to-day, not always with great success, but what better motivation to be consistent with it than that it also helps improve my playing?! Thank you Diego

It's probably what I've known but only when someone explains it do we recognise what to do. My failings are to trying to remember too much of a song, e.g. gymnopedie part 1 and also to change how I play a series of connected notes. Great video.

I don't know what suggested me this video...wether it was the YT algorhythm or the fact that Interpol/Nato has been hacking my accounts with my brother's complicity; (I know, hard to believe but, I'm that much hackeable by every agency in the world)....or maybe I'm pretty stoned, but that doesn't matter because I'm still very bright, but I love this video. Very good advice, and not just for music practice and...if my brother would have unleashed some serious agencies after me (like Mossad or FSB, who are just about as awesome as my awesome, multiple skills), then I would have known that my brother takes me seriously, and I would have definitely showed them this video and yes, also my insane capacity of analysis. But that, unfortunately, didn't happen so...I guess I'm just stoned but, this makes so much sense. Awesome video, man !

Many thanks, this is precious advice. I surely play a different kind of music, however the "issues" of learning are equivalent. The boxes provided here should be easy to tick and hopefully progress will follow. Again many thanks!

Can you make a video about how to avoid injuries? How often we should be taking breaks, hand stretches, how many reps should we limit ourselves to, etc. Or if you already have a video on this, can you point me to it?

Great timing, I needed this video and great advice! Can you please make a video about barre chords? I practiced today focused on improving my barre chords but I got really frustrated. It seems like the barre at 1st or 2nd frets with notes on 4th fret E B strings felt like it impossible to make a clear sound. And the bigger joints on my index finger created this curve space that made it worse. So I put a band aid and it helped to avoid too much tension with clear sound. It's temporary, but I'm going to find ways to not need it for barre chords. Is this considered cheating? 😢 Thank you, Diego!

Hi! Thank you for commenting! I have a couple of videos on bar chords. Here’s one that could help: Complete Bar Chord Tutorial (PART 1) for Beginner and Intermediate Guitar Students. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZPPqaWFareshtE What I have found works best is to use a little arm weight in the left arm along with minimizing left wrist flexion. I hope this helps!

the 'dumber' you are, the better will be the ultimate results, because if you just shut up, do the work, follow the program, put no arbitrary 'waypoints' along the route, don't overthink at all you'll be the tortoise to all the hothead hares out there. . .and the other thing is that really good musicians actually do have really great memory - almost photographic
