However, a rider that does everything right and wins may have never put in a single day as hard as a rider that does 8800m of climbing. People are celebrating that specific day's effort, not the training to get them there.

As someone who has owned a Melee for over a year (coming from an S-Works SL6 and pre-aero Cannondale SuperSix ), it is a truly underrated bike. It might not be the most out-and-out aero but it's still far from a slow bike. I'm a USA Cat 1 and have done a lot of racing on it with zero complaints. Holds speed well, corners great, light(ish), comfortable. I race less than I used to and now the majority of my riding is doing big days out with some light gravel and b and c roads. Being able to go from super fast race day setup, when I need it, to slapping 35mm tires on and have an all-road bike is what makes this bike stand out for me. The versatility is amazing and does both really well, IMO. So far the only people who I've heard not like the Melee are people who have never ridden one.

I've seen so many of these custom melee on sale currently on the market. I'm curious what's wrong with them and why previous owners not wanting to keep it. Could it be this is a bike that good at everything but not best at one thing?
@arelyt24Ай бұрын
@@asiantrick24 Who knows why people sell anything. There are also a lot of SL7's and SL8's on the used market. Likely people getting bored and wanting to try new things, not sure it says much about the bike. I love mine and have considered selling it because trying out different bikes is fun. But to the point of 'not the best at one thing'--it really is a damn good race bike. Not sure anyone racing it is losing anything over any other bike to a substantial enough degree that means anything. The fact that it can fit 35's and can do big all-road days is really just an added bonus.

On weight management, you missed a distinction, guys. Losing weight or maintaining weight, they're not the same. At 188cm I dropped from 92 to 71kg by learning to be hungry when I needed to, between meals having only black coffee or water (or Coke Zero in my driving job for the caffeine, which worked for me) to allow my body to actually complete a digestion cycle which is 4 to 5 hrs between any foods. I had smaller portions of normal food but had to either burn more calories than eaten, or eat less than I burned. It's maths plus all of Jesse's ideas about how. Once at 71kgs I could eat like a pig as I was commuting 30kms, to & fro, 3x a week + weekend rides. When commuting, water for that hour, any other riding, ya gotta feed what you ride or you'll likely just binge.

I put the Avian Falcon barstem on my melee and I love it but you do have to use the custom spacer that adds about 10mm of stack :/ I absolutely love the melee though, its got a slightly bigger headtube so its easier to slam the stem, its got a low bb (at least in my size) so your center of gravity is lower, they use different forks for each size to keep the ride feel similar for different sizes of people, its stiff in all the right places, it can fit big tires, and this is not super applicable to me but its rated to be used by people up to 300lbs so if a bigger person asks me for a bike recommendation, its my go-to suggestion. So many cyclists don't realize how limited you are in bike selection if you're over 250lbs. The bike industry really sends the message that if you are big you do not belong on a fancy carbon bike and I really respect Enve for offering bikes to a wider size range of people. I'm curious to hear more about Jesse's experience after he rides that Melee! I've done a few races on mine and thought it was fantastic even though it breaks a lot of the trends of traditional road racing bikes. I am a bit biased though, my partner works in a shop that sells enves and they gave us an incredible deal on ours. they're definitely out of the price range of most people. It is cool that they are made in the US though.

On weight loss, I was in the same boat. Wanted to get from 84 to 77. I had some advice from a dietician. And bottom line, I started counting calories. Sounds laborious, but it's not unless you're eating out all the time. It gives you an awareness of where you are at calorie wise. My typical target for a day is 2900cal. It blows out on big ride days due to in ride nutrition, but that doesn't matter. Big changes for me is what I eat for brekky. Significantly less cereal, and a move to porridge. It's very filling, and lower on the calorie count (and importantly, good energy). And as Chris has said, the rice intake has significantly gone up. It's almost a favourite now, and forms most lunches. It took time, but I got there on the weight target. Hoping for more between now and Peaks in March. Side note, alcohol has a big effect. Cut down the days you actually drink helps, and so do zero beers. Ticks off the craving. 😉
@CoryJustusАй бұрын
I love Chris’s point about the bike being better than what Jesse is riding now. You shouldn't just heap praise on a bike if it has superior technology. I rarely buy a new bike and have never spent more than $2,000 USD on one, but I bought an SL8 Pro two weeks ago. The difference between my CAAD12 (never upgraded, Ultegra 6800, aluminum training wheels, rim brake) and SL8 is so big that it almost feels like a different sport. The SL8 did all the upgrades in the last ten years and probably twenty years all at once. To me, the bike feels like a cheat code with tubeless tires, deep carbon wheels, a carbon frame, electronic shifting, an integrated cockpit, etc. I am unsure if I would feel the same way about other modern race bikes, but I think most of the credit goes to the overall upgrade vs the SL8 specifically.

@48:23 in regards to sports coverage improving. Motocross coverage in the US has gotten so much better, largely due to the use of drones. It is such a dynamic, fast paced, action packed sport and the drone really emphasises this, flying through the air with the riders over jumps, trailing them off the start line where 40 riders side by side surge to a single corner, all trying to accelerate and brake as hard as they possibly can. It also lets you see the track in a closer way to what the riders see, like following their lines through ruts, elevation etc. Cycling needs more broadcast drones!

Tubeless can be used with tubes as many do, but why add the rolling resistant of the tyre's internal tubeless treatment/lining when latex tubes can match the tubeless tyre's rolling resistance. Pros don't fix punctures. Perhaps with sealant inside a tube, for those actually servicing their own bikes, Chris!

It feels like any dirt or debris on the road in a turn will act like marbles and down I go. But, after the air goes thru the front tire forks and handlebars, its dirty and the weight of an aerotube offsets the disadvantage of round and round can be made stronger lighter.

Ceramicspeed SLT headset bearings are noteworthy not because of brand froth but because they are supposedly maintenance free. People we might have a convert…. Joking aside, here is some unsolicited advise: So far my best set up has been: Sl8 Sworks frame, you have to put the roval cockpit, otherwise it’s an el-cheapo shitty build. Enve 4.5 wheels. If you like the tcr you will love sl8. I own both of them.

What chainrings on the Melee? They look like Force.

Yep all black is Force

But 2 chainrings, it can't be Sram! Have they mastered front shifting? Schleck may have won the Tour by default in the end but he lost it on the road thanks to Sram. Sram is still hoping to find someone to do for them what LA did for Shimano, 7x straight, arh, 7x very bent! Sram shareholders won't care how.

That’s pro-spec sram stuff that’s not available to the general public. (Ie: Lidl Trek)

The inability to ride both the CRWs on the Enve is such a loss.

When the latest Giant Alula bikes/team-kit were announced, Tadej's riding partner (🤔) was riding 30s when the rest of Alula were on 28s. I wonder why that was if Tadej is on 33s?
@RyonBeachnerАй бұрын
Tadej is on 30c tires that measure 33 mm due to the dimensions of the wheels he’s running, not running a 33 mm labeled tire. He’s on that 30 mm tire because it fits the wheel in a way that yields a bigger aero benefit than whatever weight/rolling resistance tradeoff may exist. Jayco is stuck with a narrower wheel, so they will end up having to run narrower tires to achieve a similar effect.

@@RyonBeachner When my 1970s bike reached the 1990 I ran a 1&1/4" rear tyre, not for aero but for comfort, but I stuck with 7/8 or 1" up front for responsive steering though. It only steepens the steering angle a little on an XL size. Aero may be important for winning, but so is comfort. There is no rule that says ya can't just run the widest tyre the frameset will take for the comfort and rolling benefits, regardless of the inner or outer widths of one's rims. Just following all the hype if not actually racing is a potentially foolish move if 'the look' of ya bike is the top or only consideration. MM may be thinking less about aero, if Giant isn't providing wheels that allow all 3 benefits at once. Riding next to Tadej whilst he's on 33mm widths, if stuck on 28 could be a hard pill to swallow. Just go 30s, at least outback. The mullet bike; business out front, party (for ya ass) out back? Not that the curved seat stays on my Cervelo RS ever needed more than 23s for comfort. It now wears 25mm 4 seasons on 21mmID Velocity wheels, and it's just more plush now than ever. I often wonder if there aren't just a whole lot of wrong bikes being created and ridden when not actually racing to win? Marketing and sponsorships, ha!

@@davidlilja9180 I’ll ask him what the actual reason is. A close friend of mine rides with him on recovery days. There’s actually a couple funny stories from him about getting what he wants within the sponsors product ranges. Until this year there may have been some Liv handlebars used since Giant didn’t have any of the widths that were desired, and the other guys would routinely give him shit about it. 😂

@@RyonBeachner Cool, it's always great to get more inside gossip, or preferably, truth but we are not always so picky out here in the 'cold'!! Did Ineos pull Pidcock from Lombardia so they could just use him in the 'bigger profile' America's Cup, pedalling some internal hydro-pump system?

I would like to Everest because I should be a stronger climber than I am. I know I would likely fail the first attempt but have a much better chance after, hence level up immensely. I also wouldn't use the official Everest rule by only using one climb that would be dumb.
@ChrisMillerCyclingАй бұрын
Happy you want to use it as motivation, but doing a bulk fatigue day like an Everest attempt won’t make you a better climber. You would be much better off working on a structured FTP program that worked consistency and progression.
@timtaylor9590Ай бұрын
@@ChrisMillerCycling agreed but that's not my style either lol. Climbing more to climb better the problem is I have to ride 30 miles to get to a half decent hill then still gave to ride back home. So essentially a climbing day for me is 80 plus miles where at least 60 of it is flat, pretty lame.
