Hear, hear! So many van-lifers, RV life-ers etc are still BIG takers. They need to show gratitude and they also need to share their means, just as you suggest. Sleeping overnight anywhere on the planet has costs. Someone pays for paving, cleaning, safe-keeping, preserving. You are so right in your etiquette principles. We have to realize that with multiple billions of people on earth, our “ticket” to life has a cost which we, as adults, must cover.

Great points, all of them. If I may add one thing for us all to practice...don't allow yourself to become cynical when others don't follow the same ethos. Often, when in a boondocking area, it appears as though the spots most used by locals for target practice, 4x4ing and parties are the most dirty. When seeing all the broken glass that stays behind, it's hard not to want to scream. Some of us campers/ travellers, or whatever you choose to call yourself, are equally to blame. Like you said, we could all spend just a small bit of time picking up the mess.

Love your life philosophy. As a solo camper, I follow it. Once I retired, I converted My 2020 Sienna to a camper in 2023 and have made 3 trips so far outside of Florida. I made a bed w storage & small microwave underneath, kept one 2nd row seat installed and have solar generator for power. Toilet is a REI bucket. With each trip, I refine my van “no build”. My window covers are stored overhead just behind first row seats by creatively using 4 small cargo nets (motorcycle helmet net) from harbor freight and bungee to keep it tight and not disturb rear view mirror. Safe travels.

It all start at young age education and good habits and most of all understanding the reasons why we do this. But today with the tolerance we just lost the real reason for we should do this. So what I do is picking up and do it in front of everyone… an pictures is now the way to educating. So I don’t care about the judgement of others I do it for my own civil responsibility.

Hi Eric! I agree with all of your points! I have converted my '16 RAV4 into a sleeper vehicle of sorts. I have a small 12v refrigerator for healthy snacks and sleep with a CPAP machine for sleep apnea. I power both with a Bluetti 700w power supply. For $25 dollars a month, I can stay in any Planet Fitness parking lot and use their toilet/shower facilities. And if I must enjoy a bit of campground life, I can simply rent a cabin. This is SO much cheaper in my retirement years than that 40' diesel pusher I used to have! Regards and keep up your excellent content!!

Hello from Winnipeg! Thank you, Eric, for making these wonderful and inspiring videos. I am very new to van Life. Started down this path last year as a way to see some family members who lived 2 hour drive away. I had a life changing bike crash a year ago and am still recovering from that concussion sustained. Gratefully I am so much better today. I could not drive long distances, visit and then drive back again. Cycling also was still one of the few things I could do that I still felt almost normal. So I added a few items to my van, tossed in a bike and found a way. I am on my own and the freedom, peace and simple joy of travel was a huge gift to me . I have been a vanlife junkie ever since😂 recently I came across your videos, and they have been best for me. So well done and easy to follow for even the non handy, slightly cognitive imparied me. I can't wait to tackle the cabinets. I happen to have a jigsaw! Thank you much. You have made a difference in my life. Do you ever travel with a bike? I have been sleeping inside my van with my bike, like you, I am very neat, organized and tidy so I made it work but it can be so much better if I can get it out of my van in a safe way. It would be tricky on my roof as I am only 5'6 tall and have a full size dodge grand caravan. I am very strong but due to my accident have to be careful lifting heavy, especially overhead. My van gate opens up so I may have no choice other than the roof but then I have an expensive bike up there if I can even manage with the on and off of it.

I agree 100%…. one of my pet peas is the number of people in vans or RVs who are willing to disturb the peace of others around them, with their music, loud talk, children who seem to like to scream and screech, and who are unsupervised etc. It’s amazing to me how unconscious people seem to be of others around them!!!!

100% will be sharing this great reminder of the VanLife Golden Rules elsewhere Eric! This reminds me of a logging town on Vancouver Island. Their sole business focus was logging the nearby old growth forests until a few people recognized the benefits of eco-tourism. As a result, the town has grown economically and diversified to a more sustainable future, and saved a few irreplaceable old growth pockets along the way. Many places can benefit from providing services to VanLifers but it is our responsibility to give them a reason to do so.

Good advice. We clean up wherever we park, free or not. I agree about a large vehicle needing to go where it is reasonable and I think it is a shame when a huge vehicle is seen parking where a car is meant to and taking all the space because it is partly that which causes local authorities to ban every vehicle from staying. Also people sitting in a car park or open space with their camping gear laid out everywhere is just rude if it isn't a designated camp ground. One thing I have noticed is local day trippers are more likely to leave their rubbish everywhere because they have not allowed for taking it home with them in the same way that camping vehicles have, so sometimes it is they who add to the ban.

Hello from Germany, much narrower than the States an that follows...more restrictions, especially during covid, Campgrouds closed, so the people tryed to sleep everywhere in the woods, everywhere piles of toilettpaper, sh..., trash, you are right in every point, give and take, life and let life, for a campfire i use always a hobostove, on sand oder gravel, and on flamable ground, with a weldingblanket, or i try to find a stone or something else. Foldable firepits are also a good opinion für making a campfire, easy to carry and store in a car. The world is getting much to small for all the people...stay healthy and enjoy your life!!! Good day from sunny Australia. I just found your content on You Tube. Your advice and reasoning is very forward and logical. I subscribed immediately. I’ve done two van builds and in a few weeks will take on my third. Your tips are very useful and definitely something to consider when planning out the most efficient floor plan and build to meet all needs. Here in Australia the infrastructure is excellent in terms of promoting an outdoor lifestyle which caters to Vanlife. There are provisions everywhere and so much to choose from. All from free overnight sites to elaborate full service parks with kitchen entertainment areas, fridges on site with laundry and rec rooms. I know how great it is here as I lived in Canada and see the huge difference. Can’t wait to watch the rest of your videos. Keep on producing more vids. 👍

Thank you Eric. These are wise words. With the boom in vanlife, I wonder how sustainable it is. So many vanlife youtubers brag about how cheap it is and going stealthy. But how many are takers only? I agree that we have a responsibility to contribute and consume. That is why the services are "free". Moreover, some vanlifers didn't have much choice but to live in their van and have limited incomes. Then there seems to be some that chose the life to make money from product reviews and links. All need to follow your wisdom. And some can afford more than others.

Thank you for raising my awareness. I try to live with consciousness and care but there is so much we can learn from each other! I walk on paths near my home and pick up trash on my way. It feels so good to do this. I don’t judge why the trash is there. Recently I went to IKEA and ran across two women accompanying a paraplegic man in a wheelchair with several tubes and bags hooked up. My heart melted for the kindness I felt from the trio. One lady opened the large exit door, dropped her keys while balancing ice creams to share. A napkin flew into the wind and we were helpless to stop it. Now whenever I see trash I remember her and imagine there is no fault surrounding it but just pick it up to help in a way I can. Thank you Eric for reminding me of so many good ways to be in this world. ❤️

I learned a lot of along the way about how to stay safe and common sense practices. The points that you’ve made concerning sharing, and being considerate, are helpful reminders! It’s easy to feel like you’re in survival mode on the road and forget to give back! Thank you for what you’re doing!

Hello Eric. I am from Ontario. My wife and I are retired seniors that have always enjoyed camping and Road trips. In the past we have travelled across western Canada and throughout northern Ontario and across the northern states in a stripped down van. We presently have an Aliner trailer that we have been using for the last few years. However we both loved the idea of travelling in a van and since we have a Honda Minivan we began searching to see how feasible it would be to travel with just the van (looking to go down east-Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and maybe Newfoundland. I was searching the internet for information and immediately subscribed after watching one of your videos. Your presentations are all great, so intelligent and so well presented. I just finished viewing your "6 van life survival tips". So well done, I agreed with everything you talked about in this presentation. Consider me one of your Goodwill ambassadors when we next hit the road. Thanks again for your.

Maumee Ohio,,,, THANK YOU ! You have A platform of followers, and for you to use this to promote proper ethics of van life is so admirable! When we travel, and we see disrespectful people, it just breaks our hearts, because we know another law will be made against our freedoms. Thank you very much, Eric.🙏

Hey Eric, my girlfriend and I are about to go on a 3 month van trip around western USA for the first time, we're very excited but also very nervous. Your videos have really upped my confidence and have made me feel much more excited than nervous now. We are going to try and copy your van layout nearly identically in a 2005 Honda odyssey , albeit much more makeshift! We love the practicality and simplicity to build, of the folding bed design with shelves and a countertop. It seems like a much better design than most out there. Thanks for all the inspiration!

Spot on Eric. In additon, I cut up my plastic packaging. The package of product is often larger that the item its self and it has served its useful life. I find it theraputic and a good workout on the forearms. ; )

I really appreciate how you think about giving back and mutual obligations to each other! So many folks think the endgame is to get as much as possible without giving back in return. ❤
