Long-haul trucker’s perspective: Truck-stop showers range from $5 to $15 at small “mom and pop” truck-stops. Major truck-stops (e.g., Love’s, TA, Petro, Flying J, and Pilot) are usually about $15, or a little more. Having your own towel and soap is sometimes required, but the big stops supply those. All truck-stop showers are private rooms. Virtually all have shower, toilet, sink, bench (or chair) and mirror. Very few have tubs- but Little America, on I-80, in Wyoming, does, and they’re great). Many/most offer what is called “team” showers. Since long-haul truckers often have teammates, for the cost of one shower, they will provide two separate showers. Also, as there are husband and wife trucking teams, *some* stops allow two persons to use one shower, but that seems against the policy of most. There is nothing “uncomfortable” or awkward about truck-stops or the showers. We put our pants on one tentacle at a time just like everyone else. At peak hours, you may have to wait-as long as an hour, but usually there is one available in a few minutes or right away. Also, all the major truck-stops have their own reward-card programs, but as far as I know, the rewards accumulate only for diesel purchases. I think the minimum is around 50 or 60 gallons, and automatically grants you one free shower credit. Ask inside. Final thought: There were RVs and car-campers at almost every truck-stop I have been to over the years. The big, bus-sized RVs and 5th-Wheels sometimes have no choice but to park with us, but the cars, vans, and pickups need to stay out of the truck parking area. Virtually all truck-stops have plenty of car/van parking on the front side, with the back reserved for the big-rigs. Practical reasons: First, we assume any non-commercial vehicle in our lot is likely thieves, drug-dealers, or human traffickers. Second, if you have never backed a 53’ trailer into a parking spot, I guarantee you that if you venture back into that area, you will be in someone’s way without knowing you are in the way- and that is dangerous. Third, places to park a 73’ long semi-articulate vehicle are not always readily available for those who require one.

Thank you for those awesome details for showering in a truck stop. It is effectively an interesting alternative way to shower if you don’t mind for that price range, and if you are in the vicinity of one when needed. Thanks again for your comment 👍

As a nurse (40yrs) I have washed thousands of people using clothes and bowls of water. In my van l use two small buckets that yoghurt came in. One for washing, one for rinsing and use microfibre clothes and towel. You just start at the top and end at the bottom. In cold weather you can remove clothes/change clothes as you work your way down. Wash the area between your legs with baby wipes that you discard. My buckets have lids. I carry them to a public toilet in a cloth shopping bag to empty. If you’re not sweaty, dirty, sandy just ‘top and tail’ using baby wipes, wash face, hands, under arms and genitals.The same type of bucket lined with a plastic bag and some kitty litter makes a good emergency toilet. Just tie up bag, wrap in newspaper and place in a bin.

I use the camping bag solar shower. You don’t always need to keep it outside. Fill up the bag to where you can easily lift it over your head. Then take out a full glass of water from the bag and microwave it. Pour it back into the bag. That should be warm enough to shower with. Fold away ( roll it up) for next time.

Yeah I use a black 5 gal bucket with sealed top that doubles as a aux water tank. I can set it out in the sun or leave it in the van and just boil a large pot of water to add to it to heat it up. I have a rechargeable submersible pump with a low flow shower/bidet head that shuts off flow and a shower/toilet tent if needed. I also use it as a bidet... Great videos Eric!!

I agree with the hygiene. I have a 2 second pop up stall that re- coils down into a flat circle about 1/2inch high. My shower is a shower head with submersible usb charged pump. I put it in a water jug left in sun for dishes, rinsing feet and showers in my pop up. I put the 2 1/2 gallon jug on top of car for the day if travelling and I know I’m going to want a shower that night. If raining I add heated water from Kettle to the jug to warm to nice temp.

I must say if hand washing, sponge bath, it’s working for you then your not doing it correctly. Back in scouting we had nurses that came in and gave us instructions on how to properly clean form a wash basin. The thought back then was that you were astutely cleaner taking a sponge bath than a shower. It was recommended that a spray over the head at end was recommended. Just saying

I'm converting a minivan and buying a tankless water heater shower. When I think of all the time, gas money, and mental energy wasted on driving/planning for a shower, etc...I'd much rather spend an extra $150-200 upfront for the hot shower and cabinet.

Please look out for gas poisoning. You need a lot of proper ventilation and a CO2 detector. It's no joke: one of those had a flaw and killed whole families, plus a few dogs in the sleep. CO2 detectors go on/near the floor.

Thank you My original plan was to convert a sprinter, but after watching so many minivan conversions, I decided that the smaller profile would give me the flexibility I seek. I love my hone shower and had to think a lot about how I would stay clean on the road once I officially leave for my North America road trip. I decided to purchase a shower tent; I went with the Joolca ( shower and changing room). I plan to use a bucket of water, heat some portion on my camp stove to get it warm enough. Use the shower pump and take my shower. I know I can’t use the tent everywhere, but I can use it in most places. We are testing the shower next week during a car camping trip. That should help me determine how much water I need to adjust for in my build. Looking forward to your next video :)

I think I'm going to get a pop-up pod that I can use as a wet bath, with a simple composting bucket toilet and solar bag shower. The only issue would be trying to take showers in the cold of winter. Maybe you could warm the pod up with a small propane heater and hang it somehow so it doesn't get wet. You could also boil water in a kettle and mix it with room temp or cold water in your shower water container.

Another great video! Your videography is Instagram worthy, but your advice is practical and down to earth. That is a very rare and awesome combination! If showering outside is necessary, the privacy issue is easy to solve. Shower tents are cheap and setup is quick. Place it adjacent to the vehicle door, and use the shower system of your choice.

Can't wait for your.design.video. my choice.right now. Is the five gallon solar shower with the pop up shower tent that I have heard that some people use for a place to use their toilet, which I find unacceptable if the sun is out you cast a shadow and everyone knows exactly what you are doing. I have no problem with people knowing I'm showering but they should not be subject to basically seeing me popping. Maybe that's my personal hangup but van lifers have a bad enough reputation and going to the toilet in public will not help.
@ericenjoysearth2756
@ericenjoysearth2756 3 жыл бұрын
Those are really good points about the pop up privacy tent. I am not a fan at all of it. I will certainly talk about it. I have camped hundreds and hundreds of nights in a tent, probably thousands of times. If there’s something that you hate when tenting, it is having to wait that your tent dry! Now with a pop up tent, you completely soak it with water inside! I really much prefer cheap 3$ water curtains that are flat, easy to wipe, and cheap to replace if it mold. Also you won’t really se trough them. Being on the side of the van you may park easily to get more privacy an shadow. I really like your comment! Thank you for sharing this full of sens opinion ✌️

I suggest, maybe you can get a few pieces of wooden floor boards, and use them as temporary shower floor, so you can shower without wearing those water shoes. I saw some at Ocean State Job Lot, but I suppose similar departmental stores selling summer outdoor goods will carry them. I asw some to be use for laying on the beach sand. Anything similar will do. After use, you can leave them on a wooden box on the top of your van to dry out.

As an X truck driver I showered at truck stops for many years. With a fill up, or at least 50 gallons of diesel, you would get a free shower. They were great. But, now I don't drive 18 wheelers so I have to pay and now they cost like $15! During nursing school 2015-2017 I lived in my van (Ford E350) and had a gym membership. That was easy. But once you start traveling truck stops are too expensive and as mentioned, gyms aren't that practical. I preferably want to shower every day or at least every other day depending on weather and my outdoor activities.

@@ericenjoysearth2756 All thanks go to you. Currently I use a prototype I made-just for long drives. It's a 5G bucket into which I secured two smaller containers-a small lidded deli-style bucket (lined with compostable bag) and coconut coir, which sits in the back of bucket. And in front a small laundry bottle with nylon hose capped with a female urinal (or could be flexible funnel). The urinal can be removed to fit the bucket top with a gamma lid. The rim can be made comfortable with a pool noodle. Can be cleaned with vinegar. It's all a bit gerry-rigged and bulky, but worked well when needed. My goal was to create a separator so urine which is relatively benign can be easily disposed of, and #2 can stay dry to minimize odors. I suppose this set up could be taken into a pop up privacy tent rather than using inside, assuming the right environment for that.
