As a Chinese Aussie, I definitely relate to this, especially now I'm married and live away from home and my mum still making food for me. I laughed so hard at #5 - Sharon the cook eh? And the body language after the phone call.. nailed it. You guys are amazing comedic actors
@unterdessen88225 ай бұрын
My former (Chinese) co-workers loved that no means no in northern Europe. In China they were used to getting asked 15 times in a row whether they wanted anything to eat, even though they kept saying no. Here it's just, "Do you want some?" - "No." - "OK." and that's it. At first they thought we were very uncaring, but after a while they realised that you can have deep, meaningful conversations, when you don't have to spend 60% of your time rejecting food that you have already rejected 14 times before.

My mother was useless and thought nothing of giving my sister and me crap. She often took a few slices of that prepackaged Eckrich bologna, slapped it onto a paper plate and sliced it into squares. She'd throw a handful of chips on it and hand it to us for lunch. We peeled it up with our fingers to eat. But when we went to see either of our grannies we knew we were gonna be fed. And we were happy they cared enough about us to make something for us, even the sandwiches they made us were great.

That’s a lot of conversations like this. When he showed up, he begged us not to make him sit or take food. My grandma was a great baker, but she didn’t force anything on him. My Mom also acted as his security to make sure he wasn’t attacked by the Aunts. He was so thankful and less bloated by the time he left.

It's literally pointless saying NO to food in an Italian household, because it translates to "fill my plate again please".

HAHAHA, so true! I'm a care worker of Estonian, German and Polish decent on my mother's side and I worked with a Polish lady once. Every time I had a shift with her, she insisted on feeding me! Wouldn't take no for an answer! My maternal grandparents were Estonian born migrants and when they used to entertain and if we went to visit, the food came out! When my siblings and I were at school, they used to give us afternoon tea when they had to pick us up from school. It's not just the Greeks, Italians, Croatians, Serbians and the Macedonians that insist of feeding their guests, kids, friends and relatives when they come around, pretty much ALL of Europe and even parts of Asia do it too. My dad is Singapore born and they do it there too.
