6 ways to Mount a 36er Unicycle! Watch to the end!

This is my most ambitious and much improved mounting tutorial since my "paper plate" version from 2012. This one covers 6 freemounting techniques plus one more that is an all new "helper" mount that you carry with but takes up no space and adds no extra weight! MUST SEE, WATCH TO END!
I purposely left out the so-called "rollback" mount and the "kick-up" mount. The rollback mount is Impractical and inefficient especially for mounting a 36er unicycle because, as the name implies, the wheel rolls backward when mounting, which requires you to quickly reverse direction in order to start moving forward. This is especially difficult if you use short cranks like I do which have a lot less leverage to quickly stop the movement of such a large heavy wheel.
And I also left out the kick-up mount because it is also not very practical for everyday use and it is also how I tore my hip cartilage the last time I did about 30 of those in a row! Ouch! The so-called "suicide" mount was also not included, which basically is a jump mount without your hands touching the saddle or any part of the unicycle until after you've landed on the pedals. This is mostly done for show or as a trick and again not practical in everyday use.
In this new video you will also see my all new 36er mounting trainer that you can easily make for next to nothing. Instructions and parts list below:
UniGeezer’s 36er Mounting trainer stand:
Chop saw, table saw or hack saw
Phillips head screwdriver
16 3” wood screws
Two 4x4’s each cut to 18”
8 pieces of 2x4 each cut to 10"
Griptape for the tops of each 4x4
Attach each 2x4 to 4x4’s to make them stand vertically.
You can use long clamp or screw each completed 4x4 stand together for stability.
UniGeezer's "Helmet Mount": Drill small pilot hole on side of helmet - left side if you're right-footed, or right side if left-footed. You can buy a "badge retriever" with 48" cord for under $8 online.
Cheers!

Terry, I am sorry to say I am one of your failed followers. You helped me select my Uni's (3), but an unassisted mount I have not learned. I can ride for a distance and then fall off. My nephew and his girlfriend are expressing an interest so I am donating the 24's to them and keeping the 29. Their interest has reawakened mine. I am 70 and not giving up.

Nice tutorial Terry! Love the helmet mount. I can see how it is beneficial not to put any weight on your back pedal when you practice static mount. But when you actually mount I think you can put quite a bit of weight on the back pedal if you push the wheel a little bit forward before you step on. I've been following your channel for 9 years which is how long I've been riding. Keep up the good work!

I was just about to comment exactly the same thing. You tend to compensate for the weight you put on the back foot by pushing the unicycle forwards as you mount (this force being applied by your hand on the saddle). You can see Terry do this a little bit at 1:42. If you don't do it this way, you also have to not put any weight or force on the frame/seat until both feet are on the unicycle, which is just as hard as not putting any weight on your foot when mounting a unicycle of that size. I find that getting learners to practice balancing the forces on the back pedal and pushing forward on the unicycle has a lower rate of injury as you can take your time and aren't rushing to jump your feet into the right position. This technique falls down a little when trying to mount while holding long handlebars, and gets more difficult with the largest unicycles, so it's definitely worth learning both ways though. Another mount to consider is also the brake assisted freemount. Instead of holding the tyre, just lock the brake on and use the same technique. It's the most common mount used when riding freewheel.

Yes, and this is most evident on the rolling jump step mount.

HAH! Terry! I love you; you're a wackadoo! You managed to take a topic as mundane as mounting and bring some real ingenuity to the subject. I respect you immensely and I'll be getting my hands on my 36er this weekend. You give me inspiration for how I can continue riding for the next 50 years. Love ya Terry, thanks

Very good and complete tutorial and also original (considering The UniGeezer's "Helmet Mount")! Most people can't do all those mounts on a 36er.

Thanks everybody for the comments so far I really appreciate it! I am curious if the new colorful titles that I put on the thumbnail caught your attention enough to make you want to watch the video? This is the first uni video I've made with titles on the thumbnail.

Yes, I think a custom thumbnail title image is a sign of a quality video. As long as it is legible the color make little difference to me.

I find fire hydrants as excellent props to learn unicycle mounting and develop the necessary strength. They're also good to pee on, my dog friends tell me. 😉

I can freemount, hop, go backwards a rotation, but I can only go about 30-40yards forward. And I can't turn yet. It's frustrating, because even though I have been improving every single day, I still fear I will never get it.

can you make a tutorial on how to make a freewheel unicycle?
@TerryUniGeezerPeterson
@TerryUniGeezerPeterson 5 жыл бұрын
I have no experience with actual freewheel unicycles. The closest I've come to that is a "BC" or impossible wheel which is a free spinning wheel with foot plates but no frame or saddle. If you're interested in finding out more about that you can simply search KZbin for unigeezer BC. Here's an example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGmVi6qvaJWNbpI

Hey Terry… the running hop mount… would you say this is the easiest? (Once mastered of course) also.. I like the idea.. but I’m afraid of sitting on my goods if you know what I mean.. special underwear or something?

We always say, "BIF", meaning your bits in front. When mounting, you usually don't immediately put all your weight on the saddle until you are fully on and starting to ride forward. Adjust your saddle so that at full leg extension, your legs are about 85% straight, but never fully locked straight. This allows enough space between the saddle and the "bits."

@@TerryUniGeezerPeterson That's interesting, I'm right handed too but right foot first has always felt easier. I guess it's whatever you learn first.
