Early December I tested the new Tesla Model 3 Highland (rear-wheel-drive) in the Swiss alps over a distance of 238 km in very winterly conditions and temperatures between 1° C and -8° C.
The car I tested was the Model 3 standard range (2024 model year) with the 61 kWh LFP battery which is known to be charging rather slowly in cold weather. While the consumption was very good, the charging speed was disappointing, despite pre-heating the battery for 45 mins before charging.
The cabin heating, however, works exceptionally well, and the car defrosts within minutes. The standard heated seats and the heated steering wheel are a joy in cold weather.
Overall, the car drives well in snowy conditions and the traction from the rear-wheel-drive unit is excellent, even on a steep slope with ice and snow. The tyres used in the test were Pirelli Sottozero 3 in the dimension 235/45 R18.
I hope you enjoyed the video! Thank you for watching and please subscribe to my channel!
PS Full review of the Tesla Model 3 Highland (rear-wheel-drive LFP standard range) will follow later in December 2023.
Filmed in the Swiss alps in December 2023. Filmed and produced by DNTS Productions.

Great review. Allow me to share some of my experience with M3 2021 RWD LFP after 40 000 km I have 2% degradation and it goes like this: - I use always in cold weather Precondition at the start of a trip in the morning, afternoon, night - I charge at home at 3 - 7 kw AC from 25 - 100% - keep the limit at 100% when charging - even if you will STOP the charging after some time - Charge until 100% once a week and if you can do it from 10% - 100% and using AC 11kw !!! This will calibrate the cells and you will not generate heat into battery - I charge at DC fast-charger using 50 / 75 / 100 kw - at supercharger I use only when I'm in a long trip and I use Precondition and level of charging between 15 - 90% Keep in mind that "heat is the one that is killing the battery" therefore I'm happy to charge at DC@50,75,100 kw even if I lose more time My car when it was new the battery had 52,8 kwh net capacity. Now after 2 years I have 51,8 kwh and at speed of constant 130 km/h on highway I managed to pool-out from the battery 51 kwh The number of charging cycles is 185 and an LFP is rated (estimated) more than 1500 - 2500 cycles with low degradation. Regards.

Thx, Adrian, great feedback. I charge at home 90% of the time with 11kW and it works perfectly. Long trips are rare for us and it is of course a luxury problem when one has to charge 15 mins longer in cold weather. My full in-depth test of the Model 3 Highland will be uploaded in a few days with more info. Overall the Model 3 is excellent.

@@morten_hannesbo If you don't preheat while driving, the heatpump will even suck heat out of the battery (in your case 90min long), so preheating is very important. :) The Ioniq 5 and the BMW iX (the last one has not 800V architecture) also have different battery chemistry (NMC), those cells don't need to be heated that much like a LFP battery for charging - but on the other hand have their own downsides.

Completely agree with your criticism towards the wipers. The choice of relying solely on cameras for rain detection is probably going too far with the mantra of "no-part-is-a-good-part". Here in the dark Danish winters, the rain sensing/wiper speed is very dependent on ambient lights. Drive under a street lamp and the wipers go full tilt. Drive on rural roads without any other light sources and the almost refuse to do a wipe.. I have almost lost hope that they will ever improve.

I’ve almost completely stopped using cruise control or autopilot (except in perfect daylight conditions) since an update in 2022, that disabled the radar in my late 2019 Model 3. There was some phantom breaking, but very little before that. Tesla Vision is nervous, and when I can’t turn off the silly auto wipers it has become a poor experience. I heard experts advised Elon to use a tried and trusted standard rain sensor, but of course he went for cameras… 🤦🏼‍♂️

The cars which impressed me the most lately were the BMW iX 50 and the Kia EV9, and of course the excellent Tesla Model 3. I have not driven Ioniq6. I hear that it is great, but its design does not appeal to me. Buying a new EV these days is costly and prices fluctuate. With the rwd lfp-battery the 45 min preheating might not be enough in cold weather. I have a similar car, MY -21 and when navigating to a supercharger it starts preheating the battery really early (sometimes 1,5-2 hours) before the eta. The heating takes longer with the rwd as there's only one motor to heat up the battery. When the car is able to preheat the battery as long as it needs it can reach over 100 kWh charging speed also in winter conditions. I have experience from this from driving in northern scandinavia in really cold weather. Thanks for the video!

I put an order in for the Highland RWD M3 essentially for the ventilated seats. The first thing Ill do is add sun shades to the glass roof. Very rarely use any heating even in winter. Definitely use the air con. Always get great range of course. The lowest temperatures in winter would be around (10 c or 50 f) at about 5am when Im fast asleep lol. Don't ever need to change tyres. Hi. Great video. Thanks. I have the 2024 M3 RWD on reservation. My question is regarding regen braking. How does the car handle it on snowy roads? Does the car have the option to change the setting like in older model?
@morten_hannesbo
@morten_hannesbo 3 ай бұрын
Hi, thank you for watching. There is an automatic setting for regeneration, whereby the regular braking system takes over. See also the full manual, pages 75/76. www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/model3/en_us/Owners_Manual.pdf Here is what the Tesla user manual says: Model 3 uses regenerative braking, the brake pads are typically used less frequently than those in traditional braking systems. To avoid the accumulation of rust and corrosion, Tesla recommends frequently pressing the brake pedal to apply the mechanical brakes and dry the brake pads and rotors. WARNING: In snowy or icy conditions, Model 3 may experience loss of traction during regenerative braking. WARNING: Never rely on your vehicle to adequately decelerate or fully stop your vehicle. Many factors can contribute to a longer stopping distance, including downward slopes and reduced or limited regenerative braking. Always be prepared to use the brake pedal to adequately decelerate or stop. WARNING: Press the brake pedal if Model 3 moves when unsafe to do so. It is your responsibility to stay alert and be in control of the vehicle at all times. Failure to do so can result in serious damage, injury, or death. WARNING: Do not rely on regenerative braking to keep you and your vehicle safe. Various factors such as driving with a heavy vehicle load, on a steep hill, or on wet or icy roads affect deceleration rate and the distance at which Model 3 will come to a stop. Drive attentively and always stay prepared to use the brake pedal to stop as appropriate based on traffic and road conditions.

What was the SOC (state of charge) of the battery when you arrived to the Supercharger ? And when people will learn that the range shown in the main screen IS NOT what the car will drive, but it’s the EPA/WLTP range ? Look next time in your Energy screen for the range you have given the driving conditions you face. Teslas are on the road for 10 years, I am amazed by the lack of understanding of what the numbers shown on the screen are by some of the Tesla owners.

Hi Voldar 70, I arrived with 23% SoC and had pre-heated the battery for 45 mins. There were 6 Superchargers and only one other vehicle charging, I was the second car charging. The charging speed varied between 76 kW and 94 kW - I know others have experienced even slower charging in cold weather, so I guess it is ok. My private car is an Audi Q4 e-tron 50 and it charges even slower. I have tested Model S Plaid, two different Model Y dual motor, the Model X dual motor and the Model 3 highland - I generally achieve the indicated WLTP or 95% of it, except if I travel up the mountain.

@@morten_hannesbo was the charger a V2 or V3 ? 75 kWh is pretty slow on a LFP battery unless it was power-sharing (it can happen even if only 2 are at the site, if both are adjacent) or the outside temperature was -15 or -10C. The fact that the charging power went up means the battery wasn’t warm enough or the guy near you left the charger. I know for a fact that it takes 25 minutes to bring a battery to the right temperature for the optimal charging speed (if preconditioning before charging was enabled). You said the preconditioning was 45 mins !! Something then was off. As for WLTP range, yeah, maybe at the speeds you have there, you can achieve them. 80 km/h in average is about right for the WLTP range. Unfortunately no one can see the duration of the trip/leg to have an idea of the real driving speed average. Maybe next time, when you add the information about the Wh/km used, you will also add the time needed to cover those km. It will give an insightful information to others about what to expect when driving in temperatures of about 0-1C and in -10C.

We have a 2022 model 3 LFP and live in QC Canada. Winter temperatures regularly go below -20c and the trick to obtain good charging speeds in cold weather is to precondition before every departure and always navigate to a Supercharger. We often travel 700km journeys in the winter, this requires 3 stops of approximately 20 minutes each 5% to 80% even below -20c.

@@emiletabbakh Here's my philosophy regarding AWD or RWD. Yes AWD will allow you to accelerate faster in bad conditions, but in my experience this is only a minor benefit. With good winter tires we've never had any issues keeping up with traffic, city, rural roads, or highway, no issues. If Tesla made an LFP battery version of AWD vehicle, this is what I would get. IMO the best Model 3 and Y are the RWD because of the LFP battery. We're now over 1000,000 km and the GOM shows 416 km range instead of 428 km when new. And we Supercharge 40% of the time.

@morten_hannesbo
@morten_hannesbo 4 ай бұрын
Yes it does. Preheating increases the consumption but much improves the charging speed. Tesla states the benefits are apparent when charging at freezing temperatures, below 0 Celsius. It's quite rare you'll be charging in those circumstances in most countries for the vast majority of the year. It absolutely makes a lot of difference at sub-zero temperatures, where you should try to pre-heat the car before driving at all, not just before charging.

@@morten_hannesbo thanks for your answer, to extend the question, the consumption stated and the number of kWh consumed for an X amount of kilometers, it takes everything into account ? Let's take the Since last charge, I enable Sentry mode sometimes, I preheat the cabin most of the time which consumes around 10% on one full charge (1, 2% in the mornings before work and after aswell). So does this take everything into account ? I am quite enable to match the data. Thanks in advance for your answer

Ah yes, so a slow start. I would have expected better! The cars you mention are not comparable since they have a lot lower efficiency and much larger battery. Battery size and charging speed (in kW) are directly related! You could measure charging speed in km/h. E.g. How much range per hour does it charge. This is a much more fair / equal comparison.
@SideQuestStijn
@SideQuestStijn 5 ай бұрын
Eg 100kW on a less efficient car that has an efficiency of 22kWh/100km might be 450km/h. And 100kW on Model Y at 17kWh/100km might be 588km/h.

@morten_hannesbo 5 ай бұрын
@@SideQuestStijn Thank you, yes you are right. When testing I use my daily drive to work and try to test a car over 900-1000 km, I then compare the consumption kWh/100 km irrespective of weather conditions. I park in a heated garage both at home and at work. It is not a scientific test but reflects what consumers will experience. I generally make charging tests 10-80% which compensates for battery size. The long range Lithium-ion versions charge much faster than the standard range LFP battery. Comparing to e.g. Q4 e-tron or Mustang Mach e, the LFP is pretty competitive.

Thanks for the no nonsense video, found it informative, also it’s refreshing to see once in a while someone with ZH license plates driving safely ;). Regards to charging, it may be that due to the LFP battery you won’t see much higher charging speeds. Also, the lowest percentage you get, the highest charging speed and if you stop at 30 SOC it will be much slower than at 10-15 SOC especially if you give it more time to prepare the battery for supercharging.

The LFP can charge up to 170kW if the battery is warm enough. In cold weather it needs time to heat up the cells and the drive here was simply too short. On long distance travel if you charge after 2-3 hours of driving and the Supercharger-Stop is in the navigation system, the battery will be preheated and warm enough for 170kW even on very cold days. That's my experience after 3 years of Model 3 with LFP battery. ;)

My Audi Q4 e-tron 50 is promised to charge at 135 kW and actual is 115-125 kW which I'd call a pass.

In those colder temps, even with preconditioning it won't get to full charging temps until it's been charging a bit. And as you mentioned with the percentage you were at you cannot reach the full speed. It also depends on the type of supercharger you were at. A V2 charger can get up to 150kwh but if there was a car charging next to you then you're limited to 75kwh. V3 and V4 can get up to 170kwh for the RWD I believe, and 250kwh for some other models of Tesla, but again, only when you're around 0-20% and then it slows more as your percentage gets higher. If Tesla can figure out how to get the charging curve flattened longer then that would be a huge milestone for them, as it would decrease charging times a good deal even at already fast chargers.
