I love how they hand write the chinese word 脆 (Fragile) in red colour on the box. By the way, the box looks so beaten up.

You theory makes sense. Reject parts thrown together in a box and sold as a kit. Good luck to the amateurs that were so unfortunate to buy one or got one gifted. So many failed projects. It probably takes a good luthier to make anything decent from that. It would probably make for a good practice violin when done. Practice is what i need when i pick up the violin again. So sign me up for the giveaway IF it will happen ;). I am looking forward to the videos on the build project. Thanks for going for it... you kinda had to do if after the reaction video on twoset, i guess ;)

About these type of DIY Violins, I read in the comment of twoset's video that these violins are like a cheap and quick way for beginner/medium level luthiers to make violins. I think that's why this exists. I am a non musician so I don't know how legit is this but seemed pretty practical also loved the vid 😙
@xseper
@xseper 4 жыл бұрын
Disagree... Some of those parts are good, some of them are bad; you have to have knowledge and practice to evaluate them - bad idea for a beginner.
@rimjhimdhusiya699
@rimjhimdhusiya699 4 жыл бұрын
@@xseper I don't clearly remember the whole comment but I do think it wasn't totally a noob but the comment did say that this is the reason why the things that need to have holes don't have it, how it's unbalanced so the person making this still needs to put effort to brand it off as theirs . Again not a Luthier so I can't confirm
@SculptyWorks
@SculptyWorks 4 жыл бұрын
From my personal experience, when I was learning (and I'm still learning), these kits were never a thing. Luthiers seem to favor old violins from the late 1800's and early 1900's to learn, and to practice restoration.

I bought DiY guoitar to my friend (we made Frankenstrat). I had to do some fretwork (1st time in my life) and I bough pretty nice used pickups, after that it was ok. I think that it depends on instruments. Electric guitar is much easier than violin. I want to have violin (really beautiful instrument) 😊

In fact, if you want to get into luthiery, you need practice materials. You will ruin a lot before you get it right. These reject parts arent bad for practicing on. Setting necks, for instance, no problem to fail on this kit...

It's good that it's not glued. That makes it feel more like you did this yourself. On a good violin should the finger board be made of ebony?
@SculptyWorks
@SculptyWorks 4 жыл бұрын
Indeed, the fingerboard should be ebony. Lower cost/quality violins often have fingerboards that either are ebony but of lower quality so it is dyed to look better, or simply another wood dyed black.

@@SculptyWorks I'm intrigued. Could you check out Shunsuke Sato's baroque violin on this vid (the one he plays at the beginning)? its fingerboard doesn't look like ebony but probably it's cause I don't know about woods kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3aymK2LoKlgf7s
@SculptyWorks
@SculptyWorks 4 жыл бұрын
That is a fancy baroque fingerboard (and tailpiece). Absolutely traditional and beautiful. They were /usually/ made of maple with inlaid ebony but could be any other hard-wearing wood. There was less need for the hard-wearing characteristics of ebony when strings were simply unwound gut, so you saw more of these inlaid fingerboards back then, but as they evolved, we started winding strings in silver, and later on other metals, and that increased the wear and tear on the fingerboard thus requiring a harder wood that could be re-surfaced without ruining delicate inlay work.

@SculptyWorks

The fingerboard is unusable. The geometry is wrong and there isn't enough material to properly correct it. ...and I wouldn't send out a violin with a fingerboard that isn't ebony. 😊 The pegs/end-pin/tailpiece/chinrest, they could be used; maybe not the pegs, they were pre-drilled for strings and we'll have to see if the holes will match up once I set it up. The soundpost blank I can definitely use. Still 50/50 about the bridge blank. We shall see! I just got done making the bass bar! Break time! 🍺

Is there a violin kit that you could suggest? Thanks

As a traditional violin maker, I would say kits are no-good in general. But I have heard good things about a violin kit sold by StewMac. I tried to get them to send me one for review but I never heard back from them. 😉

the bass bar you showed seems really tall (like the top edge is far from the violin's plate), is that normal?
@SculptyWorks
@SculptyWorks 4 жыл бұрын
No, that bass bar was ugly and poorly made. That's from a so-called 'dutzendarbeit' factory violin from the 1800's, they were made quick and cheap. But it's the only violin I had on hand that was open.

One of my Grandsons has started learning the violin at his school. So I bought him a Sandner 3/4 size outfit with the promise that if he passed grade 6 violin I would get him something really good. Oh no Grandad, I want you to build me one. Well it won't be one of those kits that's for sure. $60 for the contents of their dustbin, basically.

I assume the first thing you will do with that violin is make a bass bar for it?
@SculptyWorks
@SculptyWorks 4 жыл бұрын
The /first/ first thing I'll do will be scrape/sand the inside of the top because it is too rough to be putting the bass bar in. Then I'll make and glue a bass bar and glue the whole thing shut. 😊
