See I never understood whether he actually died or not. The game doesn't seem to definitively say for sure one way or another. The grave part suggests it does but his appearance draws that into question. Makes me wonder if Luke did survive but Ashe died in his place or something like that.

How long was he gone for before he returned??? Also I wonder what he was doing before he returned xD was he actually doing something all that time?? Or maybe he was just summoned back out of thin air xD

If I recall, it was only a year, as the ending is to commemorate his passing. As for what happened, it is actually left ambiguous. They said it could be Luke, Ashe, a fusion of them, or even an entirely new person. There was some who even theorized that Jade may have created a new replica.
