The ambassador's final comments consider China's perspective from the U.S. point of view. Unlike the Soviet Union, China does not have a need to export its ideology. What China needs is to become wealthier and stronger to protect its prosperity and cleanse shame - unifying Taiwan. If China's influence is projected globally and has the potential to replace the United States, it may not necessarily be a bad thing for the world. The global competition between China and the United States might be a blessing for many countries. For example, the competition between China and Japan not only brought high-speed trains to Indonesia but also advanced high-speed train manufacturing technology. If many countries hope for China's peaceful rise and benefit from it, the United States should accept it, and can only accept it. The world is no longer a unipolar world after the disintegration of the Soviet Union.

Yes but unifying Taiwan requires starting World War III and collapsing the global economy. The Taiwanese continue to vote for DPP and younger Taiwanese are far less likely to identify as Chinese compared to older generations. Therefore unification will not be achieved by peaceful means and will require the CCP to launch an amphibious invasion more difficult than D Day while Taiwanese, Japanese, and American anti ship missiles rain on the invasion force

China may be an equal to the United States some day but overtaking the United States in Global dominance and global cultural influence will probably never happen. There’s a lot of things about Chinese culture mixed with communist ideology that are never going to be accepted by a free market society. Just like how there’s a lot of things in western culture that just don’t work in China. For this to work out peacefully, China needs to learn how to be more free, and the United States needs to learn how to be more accepting… and China needs to let Taiwan go, that is never going to end well.

@@tycobandit Certainly, the separation of Taiwan from China is absolutely impossible. The combination of Taiwan's independence and direct U.S. intervention would almost certainly lead to a nuclear war, pending an irreparable defeat for China in conventional warfare. Due to the ongoing political unrest in Hong Kong and the current retrogressive practices of the Chinese government regarding democracy and freedom, the implementation of a "One Country, Two Systems" approach through peaceful negotiations in the Taiwan issue has become almost impossible. However, achieving it through force is not entirely ruled out. Taiwan is merely a pawn for the United States, and if not for the Korean War, Taiwan would likely have been unified with China long ago. I have encountered Chinese individuals with differing political views, but I have not come across anyone (excluding Taiwanese Chinese) who agrees with Taiwan's independence. It didn't happen when China was weak in the past, and it is even less likely to happen in the future. The isolation of the People's Republic of China has indeed resulted in significant cultural and ideological differences from the widely accepted mainstream thoughts and cultures in today's Western society on a global scale. However, it's important not to forget that Taiwan has successfully established and operated a democratic system over several decades, and mainland China also possesses the capacity for tolerance and absorption. In fact, before the fall of the Qing Empire more than 110 years ago, it had already established a parliamentary system in various provinces. Some provincial governments were even forced to cease operations because the parliament did not approve the government's budget, similar to the frequent budget disputes in the U.S. federal government. Unfortunately, this system did not bring about any substantial changes in China's power dynamics. Subsequent turmoil, warlord conflicts, and Japan's aggression during World War II have marred the modern history of this ancient nation. Today, as China gradually becomes wealthier and stronger, the country is regaining its confidence. Although a clear path for China to synchronize quickly with the world is not visible, if democracy and freedom are indeed universal values, their arrival in China is only a matter of time.

Well, that's certainly a factor, but the truth is actually more interesting than that. It's cause the US is moving manufacturing to Mexico for cheaper labor. As China grows so does it's standard of living and that's causing stuff to be more expensive there. It's finally gotten to that point where it actually costs LESS money to build entire infrastructure on the Mexican border to support manufacturing there than it is to continue using Chinas already built infrastructure. Plus covid showed the world how unreliable it is for complex supply chains to rely on another country all the way across the pacific ocean. Any delays from that far away can have devastating consequences. South America and Central America will be being built up here soon and overtake China for the western worlds source of manufacturing. Mexico has already overtaken China as the US main trading partner as of the last year or 2. And they are eager for growth just as the Chinese was before all this began. Poor and hungry. As well as having a strong work ethic built into their culture, very strong, both Central America and Chinese have such strong work ethic.
Moreover, they were also spooked by their western govts constant saber-rattling like ratcheting up military & diplomatic tensions playing the Taiwan card more intensively, more frequent close-up military surveillance & spying, FONOPs, getting its Filipino poodle to stir up SCS tensions, constant talk of de-risking or decoupling, adding more Chinese companies on "Entities List" & impose restrictions on tech investment in China. The central planners aren't in the government. The transnational rentier oligarchy at the top of wall street (the deep state) does central planning for their private benefit, and they are the employers of politicians. The job of the politician is to deliver voters to the oligarchy by campaigning on whatever gets them elected with oligarchy funding, then do whatever the oligarchy wants, and they are taken care of whether they are reelected or not. "Reagan’s election marked the ascension of deep political forces to a position of sovereignty. Practically speaking, what emerged was an exceptionist tripartite state comprised of (1) a feckless public state, (2) a sprawling security state, and (3) the anti-democratic deep state to which they are subordinated. This consolidation and institutionalization of top-down power was such that US governance could thereafter be described as a deep state system." Good, Aaron. American Exception: Empire and the Deep State (p. 260). “Today, the statistics are good. They reveal that 50 percent of the world’s wealth is in the hands of US-based corporations, even though the national account, GDP, is not anywhere near that.” Chomsky, Noam; Waterstone, Marv. The ambassador says "it's complicated". It's really not. American food producers found a market to sell 20% more of their products in China and ramped up production to meet the new demand. The ambassador now says "we" can"t "afford" to not sell the food to China because of unemployement here. These agribusiness corporations could have simply been satisfied to keep the level of production where it was and ignored the Chinese market. As to the people who would lose their jobs, what were they doing before that? Of course we know who fills these agricultural jobs and they are low wage immigrants brought in to fill the new jobs created. Capitalism is based on this sort of insanity. It's all about greed and now that greed is "coming home to roost".
@crosslink14939 ай бұрын
Capitalism allows the markets to change based on demands of the people and markets that buy the products and services. A free market allows for businesses to easily change markets, and any workers effected by a business change or the business losing money and laying off people can find other employment in other growing business sectors of the economy. Pretty basic economics.

Few things are ever black and white. Clearly the American Ambassador to China is going to paint America as the good guy. It’s his job…. As an American living in Beijing, I can say China has really challenged my paradigm. Again, I don’t think things are ever solely good or solely bad. I will say this: China is extremely safe, on the whole people value education and are hard working, there is a strong sense of community (how many parks in the USA do you see bustling with people every morning?), and having a government that has more control than citizens means crap gets done fast. Way more electric vehicles here, high speed rail, public transit, and delivery services are way better than the USA, etc. Does that make China the good guy and the USA the bad guy? No. But it you believe America is always right and everyone else is always wrong, if you see how polarized our news sources are in our “free press,” or deny the effects lobbying have on policy decisions, etc. you are living in a state of American propaganda and denial.

In the past, the United States viewed Sino-US relations as only a life-and-death competition. The United States summarized this competition into two simple types: either the United States wins and China loses, or China wins and the United States loses. However, in the end, the winning party takes everything! After four years of trade war and technology war, the United States has revised its Sino-American relationship to include both competition and cooperation, and cooperation is cooperation where the United States needs cooperation, without considering China's need for cooperation with the United States! The United States does not listen to China's view. Why does it not define competition in Sino-US relations as win-win competition? Even if the competition results in China surpassing the United States to become the No. 1, the United States has improved itself in the process of competition, improved its social structure, further narrowed the gap between the rich and the poor, avoided the hollowing out of its manufacturing industry, and worked with China to promote greater progress in science and technology and improve the global environment. Increased global food production! The American rulers stubbornly believe that the result of competition is that China cannot surpass the United States and the world cannot be freed from American leadership

Thus, it should be understood that when pro-US figures use the term, “rules-based international order,” they are not referring to anything analogous to the rule of law. Quite the opposite, they are using Orwellian language to describe a system in which essentially no rules can be established and/or observed, given that the dominant state has the prerogative to violate and/or rewrite “rules” at its whim. The issue is Chinese tech companies like Huawei are well-documented to be controlled at a fundamental level by the state and used for digital espionage/warfare purposes. Those concerns are very valid and there have been numerous incidents. If China would cool its modern geopolitically antagonistic tendencies, slow the pace of their industrial espionage and digital warfare, and open up their society a bit they would have a much easier time growing into a global leader. The concerns about Xinjiang are well documented. The rest of your comment has some fair points but this type of evasiveness or denial from Chinese people leads to distrust.

By Pete Okuhira "China has raided seven American businesses in Beijing and arrested employees on suspicion of espionage, ambassador Nicholas Burns reveals", Yet somehow fails to mention how the head of the raided Mintz Group firm was literally the Chief CIA Representative in China! "Randal Phillips is founder and president of HFBB Associates, a strategic consultancy on China and Asia issues. Until recently Randy also served as managing partner for Asia of the Mintz Group, managing the group’s activities across Asia. He spent 28 years with the Central Intelligence Agency's Directorate of Operations, most recently serving as the chief CIA representative in China and has an extensive background in foreign field operations, policy and program management, and leadership development. He is fluent in Mandarin and Bahasa Indonesian. Randy has lived and traveled extensively throughout China and Asia. He has managed worldwide and regional programs from Washington, has extensive relationships with officials and business leaders throughout the continent, and previously served as vice chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in China. - Overview and Economics: China is 20% of the planet, the U.S. is almost 4% of the planet. Eventually economic stats will mirror those demographic stats. China's government is not so much trying or wanting to control everything, rather it wants to establish the primacy of the government rather than the primacy of the market; capitalism is important but the government is more important and it reserves the right, so to speak, to "tweak" the system as required. - Technology: historically China has been very innovative and resourceful. The number of discoveries and inventions from China rival those of the West. In just 40+ years, China has developed world class capabilities in regenerative medicine, super computers, A.I., space exploration, and whatever else. - Taiwan: the One China policy pertains, which the U.S. co-authored in the 1970's. Hence mainland China and Taiwan are the same entity, albeit with outstanding issues regarding whether the capital city is Beijing or Taipei. Long-term, the complete reunification of ROC and PRC is inevitable, unavoidable; the hope is that this will occur peacefully. - South China Sea: China must not be allowed to retain its claims of sovereignty over this vast area. Rather international law must prevail. - U.S. - China competition: long-term, such one-to-one competition is unsustainable. The inevitable result, speaking of individual nations, is that just as Britain was dominant in the 19th century and the U.S. in the 20th century, China will become dominant in the 21st century. This is basic physics, simple math. Unavoidable. - Cold War comparison: not possible. Russia is smaller than the U.S., roughly the same size as Japan (demographically), with a national budget smaller than California's. The Cold War result was arguably over even before it started. There's no way that Russia could compete with the U.S., one-on-one, all things considered. With China, the tables are turned. China is four times bigger than the U.S., with enormous resources - both demographically and naturally. Chinese students regularly perform better than the U.S. and everyone else in international test scores. Decoupling from China will not benefit the U.S., in fact we will lose if decoupling actually occurs. - Rules-based international order: this must be retained and maintained. The U.S. will not be able to do this by itself or even with its allies. There will eventually need to be international administration, with very sharp teeth, able to keep everyone playing by the same rules and to ensure that all have access to the same level playing field.
