Former President Jiang Zemin, who led China after the bloody 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, has died. He was 96.
In 2000, Mike Wallace asked Zemin if he admired the courage of the pro-democracy students at Tiananmen.

Among all the Chinese leaders, Mr. Jiang is the most charismatic one: he was well-trained in science and technology, multilingual, humorous, and was not afraid to show some temper in public. We had watched him arguing with reporters, playing Hawaiian guitar in governor’s party, and laughing with leaders from other countries. He led to China through a difficult time and helped to open the country to the western world. There are of course pros and cons of his work, but overall I think he did a great job! R.I.P. Mr Jiang!

Yes. He was a man on the ground. He ran his Country peacefully and worked with a lot of foreign countries that came to invest. I testify this as I worked in PRC for more than 5 years. Apart from being a President he was seen visiting all manufacturing plants to ensure and see the progress. May God bless him.

Reform and opening up was Deng Xiaoping's policy. Of course, it is a good thing that Jiang Zemin abided by the agreement with Deng Xiaoping. Generally speaking, I think he has done a better job in banning the military from doing business and peacefully handing over power to Hu Jintao. Maintained the reform and opening up, and he did not hunt down the participants after the Tiananmen incident. Now he is dead, may he rest in peace.

This video cuts a lot of the content of the interview that Jiang defends himself in a good way. For example for the Tiananmen square event, Jiang claims that one of the reason that the students dare to stand in front of the tank, is that he believes the army will not hurt him. This is a basis trust that the student has, regardless of his attitudes towards the existing corruption of the government at the 90s. The trust is something that I can relate to and agree with.

Impressed with Jiang's command of English. No Western leader except for one Australian Prime Minister could understand Mandarin. Jiang also studied American history, Abraham Lincoln, American politics and society. Few American leaders have spent as much time and effort in understanding China, its culture, its people. That sums up the gulf of misunderstanding between USA and China.

I don’t know a lot about Chinese politicians but Jiang Zemin was extremely well composed, despite the numerous attempts to break his composure. The reporter was polite but forcefully combative in his questioning. Clearly, the intent of the two parties were not in-line but I respect and appreciated that Jiang wanted to extend an olive branch and was impressed that he able to stick to his goal.

As a Chinese too, i dont think its possible, US always hostile towards any country that are not aligned with their view. So its "freedom" unless its different from them, something like that. They kept on bringing human right issue in China, current and past even though other country dont attack their black slavery culture in the past as a propaganda against them and their current "democratic" riot (burning, looting and mass shooting). As far as i concern, their people dont value human right as much (of course not from their word, but more of their action); its just hypocritical. but its understandable, its easier to attack other than introspect to further one's interest. By no means i approve dictatorship but for US hostility, the ends doesnt justify the means. But hey, if you strip their freedom, democracy and human rights facade, in the end its just about maintaining their dominance, whether its military or economy. And they cant influence dictatorship just like they can influence other democratic election and in return get favourable deal after their backed candidate won. The level of confidence and condescending attitude Wallace had was, let me be polite here, amazing. As an engineer, Jiang had done well in this interview. Not as eloquent or smooth as lawyers, actors, comedians or TV stars but good enough to deliver his messages across to the world. He stabilized the 1989 protests in Shanghai without using force, while Beijing(and multiple other major city) has to use military. This one action set him apart from others in Deng Xiaoping's eyes and he was therefore appointed as the leader. Of course, he was not elected, and he is not a benevolent dictator like LKW, either. Yet he is still a legend because he didn't lead a economy controlled by insufficient bureaucrats into a downward spiral.

The two great people have both passed away. I admire Wallace very much for his sharpness, bravery, and wisdom as a reporter. Jiang Zemin also spoke highly of Wallace when he was angry with Hong Kong reporter. But just for this interview, Wallace showed typical arrogance and prejudice. Of course, it is normal for two completely different countries and cultures to not understand each other, which is also the significance of such an interview. 这个访谈里的两个伟大的人都去世了，我非常敬佩华莱士作为一个采访记者的尖锐、勇敢、智慧，江泽民也在对香港记者发火时，间接高度评价了华莱士“比你们不知道高到哪里去了”。 但仅就这次采访来说，华莱士表现出了典型的傲慢与偏见，当然，两个截然不同的国家和文化之间互相不理解很正常，这也是这样的访谈的意义。

If you learn more you will find the first modern leader of China Chairman Mao is an outstanding Poet in modern history. But quite strangely he don't even know how to shoot with a gun all his life. But in his leadership China has her own Nuclear weapons, guided missiles and Satellites. Chinese people say he made China stand up. Next leader Deng xiaoping has studied in French when he was young. And when he took power he paved the path for China to open up and reform, so China has become the second biggest economy in the world from scratch. Chinese people said he made China rich. And for the current and next Presidents. Chinese people hope he can make China become strong in every aspect.
