As a Korean I'd disagree on the government funded nationalistic proud Korean narrative at 06:33. Thats the north side of the border. Lol Over here its just normal content production, we are proud of being Korean but not in the sense that we want to show we are superior than others. We're happy with our identity and our niche that is all.

The biggest mistake I see here is constantly assuming the anti-Asian comments in the discussion threads that they read are coming only from Boomers. There are plenty of younger Americans that hold those same sentiments as the older "Archie Bunker" types. Whether I'm around Black, White, or Indian folks, openly making Asian insults/ slurs seems safe to them. I say that's not cool, and I'm looked at like a square (or worse).

You cannot watch Kpop videos and not admit that the attention to detail, set design, fashion, dance, choreography, camera techniques, video quality, singing, rapping, performer’s charisma are top notch. There's definitely a fall in the quality of MV in America. It's like no one is trying anymore, so sad. Kpop is always pushing the boundaries. I think the differece is very simple. Chinese entertainment's goal is making every Chinese in the world be proud of the mainland China and be united as one since the mainland already knows there are still some population of oversea Chinese don't like mainland so the mainland China always controls and focus on using their popculture for those purpose. Look what China money do in Hollywood. Hollywood always show how China is good and amazing country only. But the goal of Korean entertainment is making the world their market. So they even want to to show world people their country's darkside too because they only focus on what world market wants to see from them.

While there are still a few excellent American shows, they're not really on the main networks anymore. HBO, Showtime, AppleTV, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc. still produce some of the best in American shows and series. I gave up on most American shows years ago and actually started watching more British content because the stories and acting (especially the acting) are just better. I didn't start watching Korean shows until last year (Business Proposal) and I haven't looked back since. The storytelling is just better and the dialogue has more depth. They also have better character development and even secondary characters get back stories. I love that they insert philosophy, Shakespearean themes, and parallels with literature into the plot and the dialogue. I often wonder if the English translation in the subtitles is a factor too. I am not really big on romance stuff and prefer police procedurals, historical fiction, and medical dramas but I do make exceptions for romantic shows as long as it's not the main focus of the show. I recommend Mouse, It's Ok To Not Be Ok, Start-Up, Stranger, Signal, Dr. Cha, Law School, The Inheritors, The Moon Embracing The Sun, The King, Dream High (first season only), and most especially My Love From the Star.

Koreans look happier when they dance 😂😂😂😂. Fact of the weekend. I think that 90% of all Netflix users will have watched some k-content in 5 years time. Kdramas have a variety of interesting topics, even if the romance grenre is very popular. Characters are never flat, the acting very often superb and the storytelling is not at all boring, as for example in US dramas. Romantic comedy has been my most hated genre ever because the stories had no substance, the characters had no personalities and I didn't give a hoot about their love stories in the past. K-romance stories have all those things missing in the dramatic storytelling of other countries. Having said that there are so many more cool dramas, that do not center a love story. You should watch (but only if you have nothing against Asian faces 😉😉): 1. Vincenzo-mafia drama with the most shocking story twists, brutality and real-life situations 2. Itaewon Class - revenge story of a young man against a Chaebol family 3. Hwarang- funny historical drama about a group of young man in the Shilla dynasty who became warriors for the king in hiding I could provide a long list of more notable dramas and I am sure many people nowadays can give you recommendations which is just great for Asian representation and together with the music industry has a major impact on global culture in general.

@@06Yvonne06 When I said "fantasy," I meant almost completely fictional to the point that it shouldn't be called a "historical." Not "fantasy" in a way like it has magical elements like LOTR. Tell me, what historical facts does this drama have? This drama shows people taking shower and going to a club in 6th century. No wonder why I called it a "fantasy" drama. Also no Hwarangs at the time walked around with long hairs like the main characters do in the drama. I wouldn't really call "Red Sleeve" as an example of accurate historical either as it primarily consists of romance, but it is accurate enough to be called a "historical" I guess. The dramas that I would call "legit historicals" are KBS traditional historicals but most foreigners wouldn't be interested in these type of series as they normally don't have any popular pretty face actors.

The fact that both USA and Canada are pro immigration nation's, one has always been more inclined on their self development of the "7th art" thus not being very open to international films outside of dedicated (niche) events and/or festivals. Whereas the other has always accepted these. As I am a francophone (born and raised), my film selection for the first 15 years of my life were French/Québec based movies (as I didn't know English), as I learned various languages afterwards. I realized that many other movies of different nationalities were constantly being shown throughout my fair city. My first Korean movie was an "oldie" named Adada, which one of my aunt brought me and several of my (male) cousins too watch to make us understand why she (as she was an active member of the feminist movement at the time) and many others had to fight for certain rights (that movie is even now a prerequisite when studying filmmaking here). As much as these K-Dramas are entertaining, I am saddened to the fact that many old classics have not been awarded a position within these platforms to the world. There should be a way to promote international viewership to these as it will also help many understand why their contemporary "stories" are as they are. For anyone interested look for movies from: Im Kwon Taek, Kim Su-yong, Shin Sang-Ok and Yu Hyun-Mok. They have worked through the medium of melodrama, which seems to be the strongest stance that K-Dramas have continued their claim to success.😊 In regards to the comment of the "shortness" of series. It doesn't only take the publicity ($$$) factor into account but also the multitude of different sources of entertainment available. When I was a child, it was not unheard of that a show would last +8 years as there was 2 English and 6 French television stations. Less chances of loosing viewers especially when one was presenting hockey, while another had baseball or football (CFL). Now even if you have +100 sports channels, you can find +1000 with some kind of drama.😅

My mother always told me Korea has no natural resources so we have to rely on human resources. She and my father lived under Japanese colonization and went through Korean War few years after they were liberated from Japan. Success represented their ability to control their fate that Koreans could not do throughout their history and thus the competitiveness in their society. History shapes culture and mindset. People make comments and judge without understanding their history and the trauma they went through that has been passed down through the generations.

Hollywood has lost its creativity. All theyre really doing now are remakes. Im tired of fast and furious 17, Avengers 13, and live action remakes of classic disney movies with a touch of wokeness. I like how K dramas and movies are usually kept at 1 season and dont involve 10 sequels. The plot doesnt get excruciatingly stretched out.

less cheating, less political content umm i don't think so kdramas are often very political. and cheating is a major theme in quite a few series. yes they have far less guns because guns are very uncommon in korean society. kdramas are sometimes quite dark and they can be sometimes suprisingly brutal such as voice and save me. korean high school dramas are more like psychopath adults pretending to be students, which is kind of funny. depends on what you like.

As a non-asian, I've known asian entertainment and what they have and can create was great for years. I learned that as I learned more about the Silent Hill games and simply who made the first three. That's where it started for me. Then movies like the Ring and The Uninvited - which I watched the western versions first, but I really liked their asian originals. I've been a fan of asian content since and I generally never liked western, specifically American entertainment because it often focused on the shallow things when I wanted more ambiguity, nuance or complexity. American entertainment is usually painfully simple - it's part of how 'reality' shows and people like the Kardashians became big. Nothing wrong with simple or shallow but I have to be in a mood for it and I like variety. I don't like everything western cultures produce, and I doubt I'll like everything made by asian cultures. I just know what I like at any point so I'm going to enjoy it and to each their own on what we like and dislike. I think it's great asian entertainment is so big in western cultures now because one of the biggest factors that influence society (at least in America) is what kind of media like movies or music we're consuming. This feels like a huge positive step for asians, especially those living in western countries. It may have a few hiccups as a result but in the long run I think it's worth it, especially from the perspective of asians, that so many non-asians are embracing what asian people are creating and putting out into the world. It feels like progress and I love seeing it more than any movie or show.

I was really taken by surprise by Nevertheless. It's such an accurate portrayal of toxic relationships, well except for the ending. Let's be honest that it's very rare for a damaged toxic person to change just like that but I understand why they went with that ending. The actors in that show really have good chemistry. Even though I was getting frustrated with the characters, I was still so hooked that I was compelled to finish the series.

Personally, it seems like a negative sign of the times man.... SMH. Think about it... We in hyper Karen culture land these days... People are Extra Extra Dramatic in society... Therefore, extra Extra EXTRA dramatic and wildly incredible stories are what people are drawing more and more towards??? 🤔 Or are these type of Drama's instrumental in impressing a "Karen/Chad" culture on society globally!?!?!! 🤔🤔🤔 Is art imitating life or is life imitating art? Definitely leaning more towards life imitating art... Why? Because, this type of Korean story telling HAS been around for decades before it hit the mainstream and we ALL know about how drama filled our K-homie's lives can be (ohhh boy, no disrespect. No shade. Just sayin') --- Sounds like a funny correlation but...i really don't think it's just a coincidence. Yeah, man. This news didn't sit well with me in terms of the deeper bigger "picture".

I’ve also felt that Koreans have a greater sense of expression through song and dance. Perhaps it goes back to a time when Koreans were a horse-riding culture from the steppes. Old historical records from China say people living in Korea loved to gather around fires and sing and dance. The elites of the Silla dynasty, the hwarang (literally flower boys) had to be skilled at poetry, music, dance as much as they had to be at horse riding, archery, and military tactics. This hwarang order was the backbone of the Silla rulership. The yangban was at the top of Korean society in Joseon. They were respected for their learning and their cultural refinement. Nobles wrote letters to each other in poems. Painting and drawing were also considered noble activities. Korea has long had an affinity for expression through the arts. It’s no wonder their natural affinity is shining through on the global stage now.

Are you telling me Korean drama doesn't have 18+ dramas? They also have rated R or 18+ (Eve, The Empire, Hit the Spot). The thing is, they brought old Korean dramas from years like 2016 to Netflix (Cheese in the Trap, The Third Charm, etc.). The Third Charm must have been brought by Netflix maybe because of Min Woo Hyuk, who was suddenly admired in "Dr. Cha.". Yet, when it was showing in 2016, everyone called Min Woo Hyuk's character the "greasy doctor" and hated him. In my case, nothing beats Chinese drama "The King's Avatar.". No romance, just wonderful character development revolving around the game "Glory.". You want to talk faces? "King's Avatar" is eye candy galore for the ladies! From the younger to the older characters, you can feast your eyes on them. The game character CG is great, the plot is great, the characters are eye candy. Instead of watching Korean dramas on Netflix, I keep repeating "The King's Avatar." No Kdrama actor has the balletic grace of Yang Yang. Lee Soo Hyuk has a walk that can't be beaten, but Yang Yang's balletic grace is different. And between Korean and Japanese content, I prefer Japanese content. I am surprised Netflix doesn't bother to bring old Japanese dramas and specials like Junichi Okada's "Security Police" and "Library Wars,' or Hiroshi Abe's toilet humor "Thermae Romae.". Why only three Rurouni Kenshin movies and not all five?

@@Jurk844 webtoon is not compared to anime. you can compare it to manga. and its nowhere near close to mainstream manga's popularity and quality. probably due to lack of editors.. also korean webtoons are mostly soft copies so it can't compete with japanese hard copy business model which earn real money. demon slayer alone earned close to 8 billion dollar worldwide. korea needs to care more about chinese and thai drama catching up to them. china and thailand is massively catching up to compete with korean romance dramas. but it would be near impossible to compete with japanese anime because of their freedom of expression which china and korea kind of lacks.
