We are actually called the Mile High City because the state capital building in Denver has a step with an elevation exactly 5280ft above sea level.

Everyone in Denver can smoke pot without worry of arrest, it will new meaning to the moniker mile high. 😵‍💫
@krystalMtn
@krystalMtn Жыл бұрын
It was also known by that moniker due to the effects of altitude sickness, and many decades before Marijuana sales became legal. This is because travelers who come from out of state often experience dizziness and sometimes pass out due to the lower levels of oxygen at this elevation. That is why athletes and entertainers often need supplemental oxygen during their games and performances in Denver.

@@marksauck3399Ehh.. a good portion of CO still doesn't have any pot sales, it's county to county & even city to city. It's mostly the more liberal places & some spots in the mountains. Any red county basically said no, unless it'd employ half the people lol, like the San Luis Valley. Also, you can't smoke in public. Generally people don't care too much if you're discreet, there are obvious spots (shows, 4/20 parade), but if you're doing it mid-day, no. Rentals often don't let you, which can make it tricky for many. If you're black or brown, good luck cuz you'll still be harassed by PD and county sheriff's.

@@krystalMtnand why the Olympians train in Colo Springs! Denver's actually lower than most the state, those same olympians train at about 7,000ft, I grew up the same. It's a lotta sunburn, and yes if you're not fit in general, you can faint. Mostly just heavy breathing, particularly *up* the mountains (8k, 10, 12, 14k ft), but mostly just gets ppl drunker & higher, a little less in shape, and dehydrated. Pretty much all altitude sickness displays the same as dehydration. But even when I was 16, a 15 min walk at 13,000 ft left me on the ground for a min 😅🤣🤣❤️

Besides being a regular big city that deals with homelessness and drug use, a lot of love in the city. A lot to do and always a bunch going on. Easy drive to Fort Collins and Colorado Springs too for other forms of entertainment.

It was cheap and super underrated when I was a kid. Now it's one of the most expensive metro areas in the country while the quality of life has decreased. You can do a lot worse than Denver, but it's really not that great.

I live on the front range, it's a lovely place. I have some reservations about Denver, it's very expensive and difficult to travel within the city. It's very dense, but just drive north and the population density becomes very sparse. Only a handful of cities like Boulder and Fort Collins are all that sizeable. Love living on the front range, though. I'm only a 10 minute drive to Roosevelt national forest and it's strikingly beautiful.

I started to enjoy living here more once I stopped driving downtown. Bike, bus or train to downtown and I don't feel like it's such a hassle to do things downtown anymore. Biggest issue with our public transit though is it doesn't serve the rest of the city very well and some of my favorite spots are in neighborhoods not downtown. Cherry Creek trail on a bike though is the fastest way downtown unless you're driving in the dead of night@@sonyagower7224

You're right! I work in tourism, and it can be hard to explain to newcomers. Had a roommate from Connecticut that thought Yellowstone might be close, more like 1,800mi. Once you get outside of the Front Range, a little in Utah and even less in New Mexico, there's nothing but tiny towns or empty for hundreds & hundres of miles. Between Salt Lake and Sacramento, drove it once, you'll literally see a couple towns. Same going thru Kansas, essentially nothing till Topeka, and well... Topeka 😅🤣🤣

The elevation of the city is not quite 5280. You have to make an effort to get to some place that is actually at 5280. Such as the steps of the state capital building. Which has a step that sits at the exact elevation of 1 mile above sea level, or other downtown high rises. There are actually several cities of the metropolitan area front range that are at higher elevation than Denver.
@logangriffin439
@logangriffin439 Жыл бұрын
Also, I pointed out to others, much of the metro and like 80% of the state is higher. Often much higher. Boulder, Fort Collins, & Greeley in the north are a little lower, general pretty green, the first 2 are close to the mountains while the 3rd feels like Amarillo. To the south Colo Springs is at nearly 7,000ft, why they train Olympians there. I grew up same elevation even tho I was 70 miles from the Front Range. But the foothills that many think are mountains when first visiting start at 8, 9,000ft, then the actual mountains go up to 12, 13, 14,000ft. Often covered in snow in August, rarely being over freezing. This is where real altitude is.

@@prestonehlers Yes but your comment is misleading. They are not different mountains. Both states share The Rocky Mountains, and they are actually higher in elevation in CO than in UT. So although the mountains of UT may appear larger in size they are actually smaller. Probably a visual deception because many CO cities are already a mile or more above sea level, so it can make the mountains appear shorter than they really are.

@@krystalMtn do you really think there is one mountain in between salt lake and Denver? There is hundreds of miles of mountains and a plethora of completely different national forests in between salt lake and Denver. The rocky mts is a mountain system not a mountain range, hundreds of ranges make up the Rocky Mountain. And of course salt lake is a lower elevation that’s WHY the mountains ARE bigger not just perceived bigger. It’s like I’m arguing with a 5th grader who’s never actually been there

Denver's actually a lot lower than most of the state... it'd probably be the same reason alcohol hits harder. At 7,000ft you get about 3/4 the pressure at sea level hence 3/4 the "amount" of oxygen (it doesn't actually change from 21%), your body has to work maybe 15%-20% harder, only enough you'd notice if you were very unhealthy or exercising. Way more important, it's very dry. Truly intense weather. Dusty. Many travel long distances (a 50-70mi commute is pretty normal). We're very active, 2/3rd of our food is based on Mexican... best I can tell, we have to do more. The "cowboy" experience. Tons of exceptions, but it could play a part. Like in August it could be 102° in Denver then have a low of 51 the next day. Winters go from around Halloween till mid May, so maybe the cold?

It's literally called the gateway to the Rockies for a reason. The front range is called the front range because, well, it's located at the front range of the foothills right at the transition of foothills into mountains.

Nick, I can see all the way from Pikes Peak to the south to Long's Peak to the north along the Rocky Mountain range-150 miles of mountain views-from the window of my third floor office in the Tech Center, just south of downtown. I can see Mount Evans from my front bedroom window of my house in West Wash Park. Denver is one of the only places where everyone gives cardinal directions (go north, south, east or west), since the mountains are always to the west of you if you're Denver. Yep, you can see the mountains from everywhere in Denver. Just look west.
