My favorite bear story came from a logger friend of mine who was on his way to work one morning and encountered a bear in the road. When he swerved to miss it, the truck turn sideways in the road and started rolling. When it came to a stop, my friend said he slid out of the driver’s window, stood up and turned around, and was face-to-face with the bear. It apparently had followed along as his truck was rolling. What he described next is a visual I would have loved to have seen. He said when he’s realized that he was looking a bear in the face. He screamed and turned and started to run. In response to his scream, the bear let out a bear noise and turned and ran the opposite way. I would have loved to seen that happen. Thankfully, the only casualty was my friends truck.

@@tanmaz8006 Here’s you another bear story from my time in Arizona. There are big areas of the state where you aren’t allowed to fence in your property because it’s open range land. As a result cows sometimes show up and investigate everything around your house hoping to discover a new food source. Frequently his garbage can that he kept in the backyard would be the target. He said it was especially annoying because they would sometimes show up very early in the morning and there rattling around the garbage can would wake him up. One morning, this exact scenario was playing out. My friend had had enough. He jumped out of bed went out his front door to circle around and chase the cow out of his backyard. He was dressed only in boxer shorts. Along the way he found a stick and decided this would be , the weapon he would use to chase the cow away. As he turned the final corner to head into his backyard, he came to his screeching hall when he saw that it wasn’t a cow in his trashcan. It was a bear. I can only imagine how ridiculous he felt standing in his backyard, in his boxer, shorts, and holding a stick with which he would do battle with a bear. I laugh at the image in my head every time I remember this story.

I'm a Colorado Turkey hunter, and I run into multiple black bears every year. This last spring I ran into 4 including a sow and her cub, at 25 feet. All of these encounters were unintentional the bears came to me. After 29 years of turkey hunting and running into bears I've only been charged once and it was in the dark by sow with one cub. I knew it was her because I had seen her before and I heard the claws of her cub going up a tree and brush breaking as she ran at me. I didn't see her that night but I heard her coming. I had a shotgun and a 45, I just yelled at her and she stopped. I was simply too close in the dark. I had a young bear this spring catch my scent and instead of it running away like all the others it was looking for breakfast and I was it, after much yelling and waving my arms I got it to leave. I think the most dangerous black bear is one that is used to being fed either intentionally or unintentionally and young ones that just got kicked out by their mom, they are hungry and don't know enough to be afraid of us. Never, ever run from a bear, stand your ground if possible backup slowly. Always be armed and carry bear spray. Give them plenty of space if possible. I don't carry bear spray personally, I carry a full size Performance center M&P 10mm 2.0 with bear ammunition. Bear ammunition is meant to penetrate bone, it's more likely to save your life if you need it then regular ammunition, It is hardcast heat treated ammunition. I'm a 5 foot 1 female, I've never had to shoot a bear and prefer not to. This year's the only time I pulled my pistol on that young bear. Reading their body language is key to making the right choices. When I saw him catch my scent and start coming in very interested instead of leaving, that's a very bad sign. That's why I pulled my pistol, but I still did my best to deter him before I had to shoot and luckily he decided to leave. Be aware of your surroundings and have fun.

I saw a pretty small black bear in Yosemite once, rip a door right off a Honda car with one finger! Some dummy had left a loaf of bread in there. The bear looked all around all guiltily, then all you saw was gless flying everywhere. He ran back into the woods, so we went to asses the car. You could see where he put just one claw-nail in the door. Now a grizzly would be insanely strong, and a Polar Bear could pretty much chew a tank open. Those are more related to a weasel, if you can believe it.

What does a bear call a camper in a sleeping bag? A burrito. Bears terrify me. They’re not like other animals. Their eyes don’t flash, they stay indifferent, and you never know when their switch will just flip. Ever since I watched “Grizzly Man,” I have no desire to run into one. Don’t approach them. Don’t follow them. Dear Lord, don’t try and pet them. They will be more than happy to present you with a Darwin Award.

Keep about four in a little pouch just in case. But really either will be quite the trick. I suspect that People who should NOT be in the woods, went into the woods. Stay out of the woods or travel in packs of 8 people and three dogs.
